Neonatal Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Test

Neonatal Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Test

A hemoglobin electrophoresis test helps measuring different types of hemoglobin in the bloodstream. Hemoglobin comes in many molecular forms, some normal and some abnormal. While the normal hemoglobin carries and releases oxygen efficiently, the abnormal hemoglobin doesn't. The electrophoresis process is based on the fact that hemoglobin types have different electrical charges. During the process, an electrical current is allowed to pass through the hemoglobin in a blood sample, causing the hemoglobin types to separate at different rates and form bands. By comparing the pattern formed with that of a normal blood sample, doctors can see and understand the types and quantities of hemoglobin present in the blood sample.

Usually, the blood test is performed when a baby is 24 to 48 hours old. The timing is important as certain conditions cannot be detected if the blood sample is drawn before 24 hours after birth. If the blood is drawn after 48 hours, the delay could be life-threatening in providing emergency care to an infant that has the condition. Sometimes a second newborn screen will be required when the babies are two weeks old in order to maintain most accurate results

Hemoglobin electrophoresis help diagnosing diseases (called hemoglobinopathies) involving abnormal hemoglobin production, such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Test is advised by a doctor when a child has family history of a hemoglobinopathy or is found to have anemia that isn't due to a more common cause, such as iron deficiency. Hemoglobin electrophoresis is done as part of a series of newborn screening blood tests, primarily so that kids with sickle cell anemia can be diagnosed, monitored, and treated early to prevent potentially life-threatening complications.

The physician or other trained member of the hospital/laboratory staff fill out a newborn screening card. The card has two parts of which one part is a filter paper to collect the baby’s blood sample and the other part is for important information for the lab performing the screen, including the baby’s name, sex, weight, date and time of birth, date/time of first feeding date/time of heel stick collection etc. During the blood test (heel stick) the baby’s heel will be pricked to collect the required small sample of blood. Parents can hold their baby while the heel stick is performed.

It depends on what your age/weight is. It also depends on your Haemoglobin levels. If it has happened only once ignore it but if it happens repeatedly you need to get yourself diagnosed. Likely reasons could be Anemia, PCOD, Pregnancy, Hypothyroidism and other hormonal changes.

Anemia (Low Haemoglobin)

If you have anemia, your blood does not carry enough oxygen to the rest of your body. The most common cause of anemia is not having enough iron. Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives the red color to blood. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Anemia has three main causes: blood loss, lack of red blood cell production, and high rates of red blood cell destruction.

Conditions that may lead to anemia include

Anemia can make you feel tired, cold, dizzy, and irritable. You may be short of breath or have a headache.

Your doctor will diagnose anemia with a physical exam and blood tests. Treatment depends on the kind of anemia you have.

Reasons Behind Iron Deficiency In Children!

Iron deficiency is a common condition in children. It occurs when there is a scarcity of iron in the child's system due to malnutrition. Iron is an extremely important mineral that is required for growth and development in young ones. It is an essential nutrient for formation of Hemoglobin, which transports Oxygen and Carbon dioxide through the bloodstream and it is also essential for the functioning of the muscles. If the child's diet lacks iron then the condition might worsen and turn into anemia.

Children need different levels of iron intake at different ages for proper development of all mental and physical faculties. As the child gets older and reaches the age of puberty, the requirement of iron and other minerals also increases. Deficiency of it causes anemia specific to iron.

Deficiencies can lead to various nutritional disorders that may cause severe complications.

The primary cause of iron deficiency in children is an improper diet which leads to a lack of nourishment. There are a number of other causes of the problem, some of which are as follows:

  1. Low birth weight
  2. Excessive intake of cow's milk at less than 2 years of age
  3. Feeding exclusively on breastmilk beyond 6 months of age
  4. Lead poisoning
  5. Gastrointestinal disease or infection
  6. Improper diet of the mother during pregnancy
  7. Chronic diarrhea
  8. Infestation of parasites in the digestive system.

If the problem arises due to dietary deficiency, it can be easily solved by making simple modifications to the child's diet plan. If the condition stems from other factors or diseases, the child must be taken to a doctor immediately for a medical diagnosis and remedial treatment. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pediatrician.
