Wrinkles: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

How is the treatment done?

Wrinkles are a part of the natural process of ageing. With age, the skin becomes dry and thin, and its elasticity reduces, making it unable to naturally restore itself from damage quickly. This leads to small folds and creases on it, which deepen and increase with age. Skin folds when muscles are used. In the young, collagen and elastin fibers under the skin bring the fold back to normal immediately. These fibers break down with age, and skin folds cannot spring back as fast, leading to wrinkle formation.

The process of wrinkling is hastened by a number of factors. Exposure to UV rays of the sun leads to degradation of the elastin and collagen fibers, speeding up the wrinkling process. Smoking and drinking regularly also significantly increases the process of wrinkling. Smoking reduces blood supply to the skin and makes it loose its natural flexibility. Alcohol causes dehydration of the body which makes the skin dry and more susceptible to wrinkle formation.

Treatment options available to treat wrinkling of skin are available in the form of topical ointments and invasive methods including surgery. Treatment follows one or more of four pathways: skin stretching, changing the ageing collagen, filling in skin depressions, or paralyzing skin stretching muscles. All topical as well as invasive procedures follow one or more of these methods.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Treatment for wrinkles of skin follows one or more of four methods. Among topical medical treatments, a sunscreen forms a line of defense against the UV rays of the sun. Topical ointments containing Vitamin A are prescribed medically to treat skin wrinkling. Ointments with alpha hydroxy acids, also called fruit acids contain glycolic and lactic acids and are extensively used. Antioxidant containing ointments are also used to reduce the skin ageing process. Ordinary moisturizers rehydrate the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Invasive and non invasive procedural methods are also used to treat wrinkles. Most prominent among these are peels. They use mild chemicals to remove dead and dry skin cells from the surface so that the underlying younger skin is exposed which is relatively free from wrinkles. Another procedure followed is Abrasion, where the surface layer is removed by mechanical abrasion. Microabration uses aluminium or silica crystals to rub off the surface layers, while dermabration is a surgical procedure performed under anesthesia using instruments to rub on the skin surface. Laser resurfacing is another procedure where laser beams are used to stimulate new skin formation with new and healthy collagen. Injections of Botulinum Toxin A, also called Botox is a very popular invasive procedure to treat skin wrinkles. Botox paralyzes the muscles causing creasing around the site of injection providing effective treatment for wrinkles of the skin. Fillers like collagen, hyaluronic acid, etc. are also used to fill up the folds of the skin by adding volume. Plastic surgery is also used in certain cases to treat wrinkles.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Wrinkles usually appear on the skin with age and anybody developing wrinkles can go for its treatment. Those who smoke or drink regularly may want to be treated for wrinkles as a preventive measure. A large number of people worldwide undergo one or the other form of treatment for wrinkles.

Are there any side effects?

Wrinkling increases with age, but it may appear in young people too with repeated frowning or smiling gestures. These are usually not permanent and do not need treatment. People with sensitive skin and people allergic or reactive to injective treatments cannot go for these treatment procedures. Overuse of treatment procedures is not advised.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Treatments for wrinkling may have a large number of side effects, ranging from an allergic reaction to ointments or injectives, to poisoning from Botox. Abrasion therapies have an associated risk of scarring and discolouration of skin. Fillers under the skin may leak into the bloodstream and cause great damage to the body.

How long does it take to recover?

General post treatment guidelines include protecting the skin from exposure to sunlight by covered clothes and sunscreen, quitting smoking, and abstaining from alcohol. Invasive and non invasive procedures need stricter care and longer time to allow healing and recovery.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Topical medications do not need a recovery period. Invasive and non invasive procedures need time to recover, and this time can range from a few days to one or two months.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Topical ointments to manage wrinkling are available for as low as Rs. 100 in the market. Other procedures cost significantly more. Botox treatment costs about Rs. 300- Rs. 400 for each unit and total cost depends on the number of units used.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Skin wrinkling is a part of ageing and is inevitable. No treatment for skin wrinkling is permanent. The effects of treatment lasts for varying lengths of time, rarely going over six months, and continuous use of a procedure is needed to keep away wrinkles for longer periods of time.

Misleading Advertisements - Why Your Skin Care Product Does Not Work?

Misleading Advertisements - Why Your Skin Care Product Does Not Work?

Nourishing shampoos and soaps, Skin brightening face washes, Oils for Stronger hair, Fairness creams, Split ends repairing products, Chemical free Natural products. You are bombarded with these kinds of wonderful cosmetic and medical claims on a daily basis and are tempted to try out these products. After all, they are promoted by your favourite celebrities!

Have you sometimes wondered why these products do not work and whether they are backed by any rigorous scientific evidence? Here are just a few examples of how many advertisements are simply outright lies while others are extremely misleading.

  1. Nourishing washes, medicated soaps: From a simple chemistry perspective, when you apply a good wash or soap onto your skin, you expect it to latch on to all the accumulated dirt, sweat and oil on your skin. And with the act of rinsing, all these should be washed off with the rinsing water. Now if your wash or soap is effective enough to wash of oils and dirt, would it not wash off any additional product that is added within it? So all that added 'nourishment and 'antibacterial effect' is washed down the drain! Also, do you expect to obtain nourishment through your gut or through your skin? So, from a scientific perspective, it is better to eat healthily and maintain a healthy lifestyle for healthy skin and to use your washes just for cleansing. Any ordinary wash or soap of your choice is ok but use mild washes if you tend to have dry skin but never use medicated washes.
  2. Stronger hair and split ends: Have you ever wondered why cutting your hair never caused you any pain or bleeding? This is because the hair shafts that you see on top of your skin is composed of a completely dead protein called keratin and contains no nerve endings or blood vessels. These hair shafts are produced and pushed up daily by living and very active hair roots below the skin. Now, no matter which product you use, you certainly cannot repair or strengthen tissue which is already dead. But yes, you can certainly use oils and other products to condition your dead hair shafts.
  3. Shampoos and oils for hair-fall: Hair-Fall, similar to fever, is just a symptom and the cause of it can vary from person to person. Your hair roots are very actively producing new keratin and lengthening the hair shafts everyday. Such intense activity of the hair roots can easily be affected by any disturbance or disease within the body, causing the hair roots to shut down and cause hair fall. Simply applying anything on top of the scalp without knowing the primary cause of hair fall would be like simply sponging your body for fever without investigating the primary cause of fever. A qualified dermatologist would be best placed to investigate and resolve your hair fall problem.
  4. Fairness creams: Your skin colour is mostly determined by your genes and to some extent by the environment that you live in. Your dermatologist could modify your skin colour a wee bit but you also need a proper environment and precautions to maintain this. Beware of fairness creams which often contain harmful or irritating ingredients. Even some medicated creams contain steroids, which if misused, can permanently damage your skin. Always obtain a valid prescription before purchasing any pharmaceutical creams.
  5. Sunscreens with SPF which make you several tones fairer: Sunscreens, like umbrellas, simply protect you against sunburns and skin cancers and do not cause any lightening of your natural skin colour. Sunscreens are important to prevent skin cancers in light-skinned races since their skin, unlike pigmented Indian skin, has very little of the protective pigment called melanin. Sunscreens are medically recommended to prevent skin cancers. Do you really use sunscreens for this reason? SPF or sun protection factor measures the ability of sunscreens to protect from UVB rays causing sunburns and skin cancers. If you are using sunscreens for other non-recommended reasons like preventing a suntan, then just the SPF number is kind of irrelevant because there are other rays besides UVB which cause skin tanning.
  6. Anti Wrinkle and Anti Scar Creams: There are medical and surgical ways to reduce wrinkles and to alter scars. Since this involves changing the human body's physiology and anatomy it comes under the realm of medical treatment. If creams or lotions were able to achieve these same effects, they cannot be labelled as cosmetics but as drugs. And can only be sold in pharmacies with a valid prescription. There are misleading words and phrases like, 'reduce the appearance of wrinkles', 'proven formula', 'helps in', 'boosts collagen production', which companies often use to fool you into believing that there is some valid scientific work behind their claims.
  7. Natural, Chemical free products: You would probably be left scratching your head if any intelligent chemistry student were to ask you to name something that is not a chemical! This claim is a clever gimmick by companies to mislead you into believing that their products are safer. Any plant, leaf of fruit actually contains hundreds or thousands of mostly unknown chemicals. It is actually much easier to perform research on just one known chemical and prove that it is safe, compared to performing research on any single so-called 'natural' product, simply because it contains hundreds or thousands of unknown chemicals.

Hifu Technique - How Can It Help You Get Flawless Skin?

Hifu Technique - How Can It Help You Get Flawless Skin?

It is a common wish of every individual to have flawless skin. Everyone wants skin sans spots, wrinkles or marks and this increasing demand has created a market for anti-aging, anti-wrinkle and other such creams that promise their customers flawless skin. But, these creams do not offer permanent solutions which is why people often opt for treatments such as chemical peels and radiofrequency. These treatments too are not the best.

HIFU or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is a new technological method of noninvasive tissue heating and ablation that is being used to treat a wide range of disorders. This method of treatment is mostly used to treat wrinkles, for brow lifting, facial rejuvenation and body contouring.

Hifu is a trusted method for body contouring. Body HIFU is a MMFU, Micro & Macro Focused Ultrasound, technology used for body contouring. By this method, the fat cells of the body are targeted. High intensity and high frequency energy is focused on the targeted area which causes the temperature to rise above to 56°C in the subcutaneous fat layer beneath the targeted skin area. The cells which get damaged are in a few weeks’ time rejected by the body's immune system.

The high intensity ultrasound is focused at a depth of 1.3 centimeters on the adipose tissue of the body. Penetrating through the tissues and reaching the fat layer, the high heat destroys the fat cells rapidly. The other surrounding cells remain unaffected and only the targeted cells are treated. The body's natural healing system harmlessly rejects the destroyed fat cells this continues for up to three months. Common treatment areas for body contouring include the abdomen, chest, arms, flanks, hips, thighs, buttocks and lower legs.

Unlike other surgical procedures, this process does not involve any kind of surgical risk. Hifu is a complete non-surgical procedure which does not have any side effects. Even a single session begins to show positive results. A session can reduce on an average about one inch of the waistline or help to reduce one dress size or one pant size. The process of treatment is clinically proven and is FDA approved. This method is tested and has proven over the years to be safe. Moreover, being a non-invasive treatment, it saves one from the pain of undergoing any incisions or anesthesia. Being non-invasive, it reduces the risk of infections. The method is comfortable and painless and is also costeffective. Over the years, the effect of the treatment has been proved to last for about two years.

However, before undergoing any kind of treatment, a doctor must be consulted to review the person's medical history before the surgery. A person's medical condition may hinder the procedure or limit the effects of it so it is best to have complete knowledge and information about the treatment that one is planning to undergo. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Wrinkles - 5 Options Your Dermatologist May Recommend!

Wrinkles - 5 Options Your Dermatologist May Recommend!

Wrinkles are inevitable with advancing age and most individuals find them annoying. Luckily, there are many available medical options to reduce these pesky lines and look younger. Your dermatologist can help you with a variety of gentle options like:

  1. Retinoid creams: These creams are derivatives of Vitamin A and cause superficial peeling off the skin, reduce rough bumps and lighten superficial pigmentation. These are prescription medicines and have to be used carefully under proper medical supervision to avoid side effects like itching and burning reactions.
  2. Peels: This a procedure in which your physician applies a thin layer of medicine on top of the skin for a few minutes and then washes it off. Over the next few days, a very superficial layer of the topmost skin layer is then gradually shed off. The regenerating skin from below is fresher, smoother and younger.
  3. Lasers and other rejuvenating devices: Different kinds of lasers can be used to target different layers of the skin. Non-ablative lasers gently heat deeper parts of the skin to tighten collagen to give a smoothening effect. Ablative lasers are more aggressive and remove superficial layers of skin with great precision. Radio-frequency and ultrasound machines use other forms of energy to gently heat deeper parts of the skin to achieve a tightening and smoothening effect
  4. Botulinum toxin: This is injected into frown lines and crows lines to relax the muscles causing the wrinkles. The effect typically lasts for about 6 months.
  5. FillersThese are substances which are injected into the deeper wrinkles to pump up the furrows. The commonest substance used is called hyaluronic acid and is the same substance that exists naturally below the skin.

And of course, daily precautions like using sunscreens, moisturizers, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding smoking goes a long way in preventing wrinkles.

Wrinkle Prevention - Know How Your Doctor Can Help!

Wrinkle Prevention - Know How Your Doctor Can Help!

Wrinkle prevention injections are used to prevent wrinkles and give a more naturally young look. Injecting wrinkle fillers will bring about a more youthful look and that too for a fraction of the time and effort of what a traditional facelift costs.

What is it?

Injectable wrinkle fillers fill the line, area or crease with a substance. This makes the trouble spots to disappear almost entirely. Wrinkle injections are also used for lifting chin, jawlines, filling out thin lips and plumping. They can be used for a wide variety of treatments and are very effective in treating such problems. The treatment can last from four months to upto one year.

Procedure and details

  • Toxins are injected into the target area of the skin with the help of a syringe.
  • The action of the muscle is temporarily reduced by the toxin by blocking the motor nerves ability to release acetylcholine.
  • A new batch of nerve proteins is built in three to four months and by six months the nerves return to full capacity.
  • This is when the results of the treatment wear off. But with constant treatment longer results can be achieved because the nerve proteins become slower at rebuilding themselves.
  • After the treatment there can be slight redness in the areas of the skin where the treatment was done but there is nothing to be concerned about as that is normal and the redness subsides after 15 minutes.
  • The entire procedure of injecting the toxin into the skin takes about 10-15 minutes.
  • It is a very quick and reliable procedure.
  • A common misconception with wrinkle injections are that it will improve the condition of the skin. But that is not the case.
  • Wrinkle injections reduces lines and wrinkles but are not skin treatments.

Cost of the treatment

  • The cost of a single session of treatment varies as the number of units of medication to be used a person varies from person to person.
  • Usually a single unit costs around 1000-1500. The cost of consultation also hikes up the price.
  • Usually for a treatment around the forehead area the cost comes around 3000 - 5000 depending upon the patient's condition.

Benefits of the treatment

  • Wrinkle prevention injections are quicker and cheaper and are also long lasting than other forms of treatments available for preventing wrinkles.
  • A single session of wrinkle preventing injections last for at least 4 months.
  • The risk factor from side effects is also very minimum.
  • Wrinkle prevention injections are not only cheaper but also less time consuming and more effective.

How Good Is The Stem Cell Face Lift?

How Good Is The Stem Cell Face Lift?

The skin is constantly exposed to sun and multiple environmental pollutants, causing a lot of degeneration. The face, being the most exposed part, bears the brunt of this. A number of dark spots, wrinkles, sagging, fine lines, etc. appear as a result of ageing and become very prominent on the face. Not just are these cosmetic concerns, but they also affect the person’s morale.

The body has millions of types of cells, but there are some known as stem cells which are totipotent the ability to transform into any type of cell (blood, bone, muscle, skin, etc.) These totipotent stem cells were used earlier in treating sports injuries to repair joints and ligaments. They are present in large numbers in fat and so the affected joint would be injected with fat, and the stem cells from here would help in regeneration of the joint. The same concept was extended by cosmetic surgeons to treat facial ageing problems. Fat extracted from an area (usually abdomen or inner thigh) is injected into predetermined areas on the face. These then act as fillers and help in skin rejuvenation and repair.

  1. Case selection with both the doctor and the patient.
  2. Setting realistic expectations is very important
  3. The area selected for fat extraction is injected with local anaesthesia
  4. The excess oil and blood from this extract is removed by blotting
  5. It is then mixed with growth factors, which are embedded in beads of hyaluronic acid, which allows for prolonged and constant release of growth factors
  6. After thorough mixing, this is then injected into specific areas on the face in multiple planes – usually three, from the innermost to the outermost layers of the skin
  7. The growth factors used for each of these layers also could differ. The second layer could have more of protein (collagen) as it helps in keeping the skin firm.
  8. The topmost layer could have more of blood cells as it is involved in vascular supply
  9. After this, a final resurfacing is done to ensure the fine lines and superficial skin damage is repaired
  10. The face may also be sculpted in specific areas to correct additional features, like the jawline
  11. Fat deposit correction (some addition, some removal) may also be done.

  1. No surgical incision required, only needle incisions to extract and infuse fat cells
  2. Faster healing
  3. Done as outpatient procedure
  4. No hospitalization
  5. No anaesthetic required
  6. No scar, as the fat is used from lesser visible areas like inner thighs
  7. Quicker and remarkable results
  8. Complete facial rejuvenation
  9. Can be done from patient’s own blood or from a donor

Hi Vandana, Loss of hydration and sun exposure can lead to dullness, fine lines and wrinkles on face. Moisturize your face twice a day with slight massage in upward direction for better blood circulation and also use sunscreen to prevent any further photodamage. Also nowadays there are many facials like hydrafacial to help you have a good hydration level. You can also go ahead with BOTOX and Fillers to reduce your wrinkles and look fresh. I would suggest to go and visit some dermatologist for the same concern.

Botox and Fillers
Hello friends!

I m Dr.S. K Chawla, plastic and cosmetic surgeon at South Delhi Cosmetic Clinic. I also attend the Fortis Hospital.

Today we are going to discuss something about non-surgical treatment or facial enhancement or improvement so that one should look young, good and beautiful. We have lot of facial non-surgical treatments available. Out of these Botox and fillers are commonly being used nowadays. As most of our clients they are not interested in surgical treatment and they demand non-surgical treatment to improve their facial features so we have Botox and fillers. Botox is a medicine which relax your facial muscles and it gives you the wrinkle free face. This is used by giving injections. This injection is almost painless because we have applied numbing cream on the area where you feel you have wrinkles or you have an enhance you want to remove the wrinkle from any particular area so we apply the numbing cream at least 40 minutes before. After that we give injections. This injection relax your muscles, so when the muscles contract you don t have wrinkles. But this is a very demanding procedure and it should be done by a medical person. Second one is the facial fillers, fillers is a material which is use to fill a particular area on your face so that it gives the volume to the face. Because with the increasing age your face loose volume from certain area and because of the loss of volume of face look looks age aging that is why the people wants to look younger and we give them fillers in that particular area. So this filler is also given by injection, it has no side effects, it will give you effect at least for 8-10 months. After 8-10 months if you want you get it again.

And per chance, it was discovered that the same medicine was easing out lines and wrinkles and making all the patients look younger. So, Botox cosmetic was born. Botil tox is used to wipe away lines and wrinkles from the face. It is a beautiful procedure. Why? Because it is short. It is effective. The results are developing in times. Ageing Skin
Hi, I am Dr Nivedita Dadu I Ahmed Dermatologist in Skinology Skin Clinic and URL for skinology is Today I will be discussing aging skin.

Aging are changes that occur on the skin as you are growing old and these changes include sagging skin, wrinkles, grey hair, expression lines, hollowing of cheeks and eyes and changes that occur in your skin because of hormonal changes. There are factors that may aggravate the ageing and these include environmental factors UV radiation, smoking, chemical exposure, hormonal changes, sleeping position, stress and alcohol.

Ageing cannot be stopped but it can be delayed and using the right sunscreen is the single most effective way to prevent aging besides this avoiding smoking, taking a healthy diet which is rich in fruit, vegetables and clean meat and fish and food containing beta carotene and antioxidants, rich in vitamin B and C that delay ageing. Moderate exercises like yoga increase elasticity of the skin. Using the right skin care products containing Alpha hydroxy acids, antioxidants can protect the skin from free radicals, acid coenzyme Q10 and growth factor enhance the collagen production and decrease the collagen and hence increase the firmness and elasticity of skin there are various therapies available for anti ageing. These include chemical peels that exfoliate damage and dull skin. Miso therapy with Ionic acid and Vitamin C, Botox with injections given in to the target muscles to reduce the firm lines and wrinkles fillers that contain substances that are compatible with your body tissues and these when injected reduce the hollowness of the tissues. Derma Roller which is an instrument 1 rolls on the skin triggers healing cascade by stimulating collagen production. And when this derma roller is done around with anti ageing serum it enhances the results.

There are some more therapies like Derma Roller done with PRP. PRP is platelet derived from your blood. Your platelet is rich in both factors and when this is applied after derma roller, it penetrates through tiny channels that derma roller has created and this enhances the results besides this we do thread lift which is a minimally invasive procedure where in threads are placed in your skin in a mesh work to lift the sagging skin and to reduce the collagen production. Lasers which include radio frequency and high intensity focused ultrasound is done for anti ageing. These lasers deliver controlled heating at the Desire depth to Trigger the supporting structures, to tighten the supporting structure of face and improve the fine lines and wrinkles.
