The earliest reported cultivation of oranges was in Sicily, Calabria and southern Spain in 1525. The first wild ancestors of this fruit were found in Australia and New Guinea. It is also believed that citrus fruits like oranges were consumed in China during the Stone Age as well. From China and India,it spread to West Asia, Central Asia and East Africa. Oranges can be found in an Egyptian tomb painting from 1000 B.C.

Mandarin oranges grow in all frost-free tropical and sub-tropical regions. A temperature range of 10-35 degrees centigrade and annual rainfall of 100-120 cm are required for the plant to grow properly. This fruit can be cultivated in a wide variety of soils. This plant requires the land to be thoroughly ploughed and leveled.
