Vitamin C

One of the safest and most effective vitamins is Vitamin C. It is essential for all beings and a vital part of a balanced diet. The absence of it can lead to a set of different conditions. You can count on getting vitamin C from a variety of sources. It is found in fruits like strawberries, oranges, and raspberries and vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes, and broccoli. If you manage to get sufficient amounts of vitamin C in your meals every day, you will gain all its benefits.

Nutritional Value of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient that has a very high nutritional value. It keeps the immune system strong by protecting it from eye diseases, skin wrinkling and more importantly cardiovascular diseases. It even has effects on keeping cancer at bay. It does this by fighting the free radicals and nitrates. This powerful antioxidant helps regenerate and repair tissues too. Studies have shown that to gain all the health benefits of vitamin C you will need to take over 500 milligrams of it every day. For this, you will have to have plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. You can start off by making sure to take 50-75 milligrams a day.

Health Benefits of Vitamin C

Mentioned below are the best health benefits of Vitamin C
Health Benefits of Vitamin C

Treats Cold

The amount of Vitamin C taken in the winter season must be higher. Vitamin C has shown effects in fighting off cold. It is particularly useful in boosting the immune system against respiratory illnesses. When the body is already under stress, it might not be able to combat the cold as well. Hence, taking more doses of vitamin C in winter is recommended. The common cold is seen in among the population frequently. It can be because of seasonal changes or during intensive exercises. Research has shown that vitamin C supplementation during extensive exercise can help develop resistance towards cold. The severity of the infection can also be reduced.

Decreases hypertension

Those who have a high blood pressure are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Changing the diet to regulate the blood pressure levels is essential. Vitamin C plays a key role in controlling the levels. Studies have shown that vitamin C has also helped patients with hypertension recover sooner.

Cures cataracts

There is proof through multiple studies that vitamin C can reduce the chances of developing cataracts. These studies were concentrated on ages above 50 and it showed that long-term consumption of vitamin C can reduce age-induced cataracts. The amounts taken should be regulated and are different for men and women.

Combats cancer

Having a high intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is linked to reducing the chances of cancer. They are an essential part of a balanced diet. You are sure to get all the minerals and the vitamins particularly vitamin C from them. There are studies that show that an increase in the consumption of vitamin C can decrease the chances of a lung, vocal chords, mouth, rectum, throat and stomach cancers.

Reduces chances of stroke

By increasing vitamin C intake through fruits and vegetables, the risk of stroke can be reduced. This cardiovascular disease can be avoided with an ample amount of vitamin C intake. This maintains the blood pressure levels and prevents instances of heart episodes. It also eliminates free radicals in the body which are the main reason for stroke.

Boosts immunity

One other additional benefit from vitamin C is an increase in immunity. It contributes to the immune system of the body and also contributes to increasing the white blood cell count. This is essential to create a resistance towards diseases and other infections. Vitamin C also helps the body recover from other diseases.

Prevents scurvy

Scurvy is a lethal disease that can lead to death if left untreated. It has a direct correlation of lack of vitamin C intake. If a person has less or no vitamins in their diet, it can lead to scurvy. It leads to weakness, exhaustion, curly hair and sore limbs. There are also cases where it leads to bleeding, a decrease in red blood cell count, and gum disease. If left untreated, the symptoms can become more severe. The patient can even die due to the bleeding or infection. The treatment for scurvy is also very simple. Few weeks of vitamin C supplements can help make a full recovery. Scurvy can also affect alcoholics and mental patients in rare cases.

Reduces chances of UTI

Urinary tract infection is an experience that is best for anyone to stay away from. UTI is a common condition experienced by many people in all parts of the world. Vitamin C can prevent instances of UTI. Doctors usually prescribe citrus drinks with high amounts of Vitamin C to UTI patients. This inhibits the growth of the bacteria which is the underlying reason for UTI.

Prevents Alzheimer's

Another promising place where vitamin C has shown results is in the prevention of Alzheimer's. Studies have shown that vitamin C levels among Alzheimer's patients are lower than in others. There is a difference despite being given the same intake. This indicates that free radicals are responsible for this damage. Vitamin C supplements can help avoid Alzheimer's completely.

Increases bone density

A reduction in bone density is a common problem seen in the elderly. Instances are higher in older women. A decrease in the bone density can lead to fractures and osteoporosis. This loss is again linked to oxidative stress that can be reduced with an increase in vitamin C intake. Age-related osteoporosis for those already suffering can be treated with vitamin C supplements.

Improves mood

Patients suffering from depression and other mood disorders are recommended to have more vitamins C. It helps restore emotional balance. Studies have proved that hospitalized patients who took vitamin C supplements twice a day had significant improvements in mood swings. On the other hand, taking vitamin C also shows an improvement in libido as well.

Improves blood circulation

Vitamin C has another very important benefit. It helps improve the blood circulation in the body. It can reduce oxidative stress and so prevent vascular dysfunction. It is also recommended for patients suffering from postural tachycardia syndrome as it will improve circulation. It also helps regulate the blood pressure in children and reduces mental stress as well. Smokers are recommended to have loads of vitamin C.

Uses of Vitamin C

This essential water-soluble vitamin is recommended to be a part of your diet every day. Deficiency of vitamin C will cause weakness, dry hair, and skin. It is a must in children's diet as it promotes growth and fights the common cold. It helps speed up the healing process as well. Vitamin C is good for healthy hair, skin, and anti-aging. The iron absorption will also be high, when you consume more of this vitamin.

Side-Effects & Allergies of Vitamin C

The body can easily take 200 to 250 milligrams of Vitamin C. If taken in large amounts, they may cause nausea, cramps, diarrhoea, formation of kidney stones and gastrointestinal symptoms. If there are excess amounts, it is expelled from the body through urine. In fact, the body could use bigger amounts of Vitamin C, when it undergoes oxidative stress or when it is recovering from an injury. This can be up to 2000 milligrams.

Premature ejaculation Premature ejaculation is the most common ejaculation problem. It's where the male ejaculates too quickly during sexual intercourse. A study looking at 500 couples from five different countries found the average time taken to ejaculate during intercourse was around five-and-a-half minutes. However, it's up to each couple to decide if they’re happy with the time taken – there’s no definition of how long sex should last. Occasional episodes of premature ejaculation are common and aren't a cause for concern. However, if you're finding that around half of your attempts at sex result in premature ejaculation, it might help to get treatment. Causes of premature ejaculation Various psychological and physical factors can cause a man to suddenly experience premature ejaculation. Common physical causes include: prostate problems thyroid problems – an overactive or underactive thyroid gland using recreational drugs Common psychological causes include: depression stress relationship problems anxiety about sexual performance (particularly at the start of a new relationship, or when a man has had previous problems with sexual performance) It's possible, but less common, for a man to have always experienced premature ejaculation since becoming sexually active. A number of possible causes for this are: Conditioning – it's possible that early sexual experiences can influence future sexual behaviour. For example, if a teenager conditions himself to ejaculate quickly to avoid being caught masturbating, it may later be difficult to break the habit. A traumatic sexual experience from childhood – this can range from being caught masturbating to sexual abuse. A strict upbringing and beliefs about sex. Biological reasons – some men may find their penis is extra sensitive. Treating premature ejaculation There are a number of things you can try yourself before seeking medical help. Measures you can try yourself It can sometimes help to: masturbate an hour or two before having sex use a thick condom to help decrease sensation take a deep breath to briefly shut down the ejaculatory reflex (an automatic reflex of the body during which ejaculation occurs) have sex with your partner on top (to allow them to pull away when you are close to ejaculating) take breaks during sex and think about something boring Couples therapy If you're in a long-term relationship, you may benefit from having couples therapy. During these sessions, the therapist will: encourage couples to explore any relationship issues they have, and give them advice about resolving them show the couple techniques that can help you "unlearn" the habit of premature ejaculation (the two most popular techniques are the "squeeze" and "stop-go" techniques) In the squeeze technique, your partner masturbates you, but stops before the point of ejaculation and squeezes the head of your penis for between 10 to 20 seconds. They then let go and wait for another 30 seconds before resuming masturbation. This process is carried out several times before ejaculation is allowed to occur. The stop-go technique is similar, but your partner doesn’t squeeze your penis. Once you feel more confident about delaying ejaculation, you and your partner can begin to have sex, stopping and starting as required. These techniques may sound simple, but they require lots of practice. Antidepressants (SSRIs) Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are designed to treat depression, but they also delay ejaculation. SSRIs used for this purpose include: paroxetine sertraline fluoxetine Some men may experience an improvement as soon as treatment begins. However, you'll usually need to take the medication for one to two weeks before you notice the full effects. Side effects of SSRIs are usually mild and should improve after two to three weeks. They include: fatigue feeling sick and being sick diarrhoea excessive sweating Read more about the side effects of SSRIs. Topical anaesthetics and condoms The use of topical anaesthetics such as lidocaine or prilocaine can help but may be transferred and absorbed to the vagina, causing decreased sensation. Condoms can also be used and are effective, particularly when combined with local anaesthesia.

Laparoscopic Surgery For Gastrointestinal Problems - The Benefits!

Laparoscopic Surgery For Gastrointestinal Problems - The Benefits!

Laparoscopy is an advanced surgical technique that is often used to find out and treat any abnormalities or a myriad of medical complications such as an infection, ectopic pregnancy (a condition where the embryo attaches itself to an organ other than the uterus), cyst, fibroids, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease. Laparoscopy comes in handy in the case of an accident or an injury where it helps in the detection of any damages to the internal organs. There are instances where laparoscopy is even used in a biopsy (to collect the tissue sample).

The technique involves a small incision, often in the belly, through which a lighted tube, called a laparoscope, is inserted into the abdomen to analyze or treat the problem. The technique is quite hassle-free, causing minimum discomfort to the patient. In fact, there are so many associated benefits that more and more people are choosing laparoscopy over other surgical techniques and open surgery.  In this regard, some of the advantages of laparoscopy that deserves a special mention are as follows:

  1. Involves a smaller incision: Most of the surgical procedures, including open surgery, can be quite messy. The laparoscopic technique is simple, minimally invasive, and involves an incision which is 1.2 inch or less.
  2. Quick recovery with lesser chances of an infection: In surgeries involving a large cut, there is a high probability of infection at the incision site, leading to complications and delaying the recovery and healing process. In laparoscopy, with a small incision, chances of an infection or associated complications are almost negligible. An infection-free surgery will heal at a faster rate, ensuring a quick recovery.
  3. The USP of Laparoscopy lies in the fact that the procedure is less painful (since the procedure involves a small cut with reduced loss of blood) as compared to many of the other surgical techniques. In some of the surgeries (including an open surgery), there may be profuse bleeding with the patient even requiring a blood transfusion. Such complications are unheard of in the case of a Laparoscopic surgery. In fact, patients undergoing a laparoscopy are often required to spend a lesser time in the hospital.
  4. Negligible chances of a wrong diagnosis: PCOS or endometriosis can be a contributing factor, triggering infertility in women. In females with fertility issues, an accurate diagnosis can go a long way to treat the condition better. The symptoms and complications associated with PCO or endometriosis can be alleviated if diagnosed early and accurately. Laparoscopy, in the majority of the cases, ensures an accurate diagnosis, making the treatment effective.

Most of the surgical treatments such as an open surgery can leave a huge hole in your pocket. Laparoscopy, though effective, is not very expensive, making it a highly affordable surgical treatment.

Laparoscopic Surgery for Gastrointestinal Problems

The Laparoscopy surgery is often advised to treat a myriad of gastrointestinal problems such as Diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, Familial polyposis, Colorectal Cancer, Ulcerative Colitis. The Laparoscopy surgery may also be helpful in the case of severe constipation, bowel incontinence (a condition where a person fails to control the bowel movements) or a rectal prolapse.

As with most laparoscopic surgeries, the procedure involves the surgeon to make few (usually 3 and more) incisions in the abdomen. With the stomach inflated with carbon dioxide gas (to view the diseased organs better), a laparoscope and the surgical instruments are then placed into the stomach via the incisions to perform the surgery. The different laparoscopic surgeries of the intestine to treat the gastrointestinal disorders include:

  1. Abdominoperineal Resection: In people with cancer affecting the anus or the lower part of the rectum, a surgeon may perform the Abdominoperineal Resection to get rid of the rectum, anus as well as the sigmoid colon. With the removal of the rectum and the anus, the surgeon creates a colostomy (an arrangement to connect the healthy end of the colon to the anterior wall of the abdomen through an incision) to eliminate the waste and the fecal matter out of the body.
  2. Proctosigmoidectomy: In people suffering from Diverticulitis (an inflammation or infection of the diverticula) and polyps (both cancerous as well nonmalignant growths), a Proctosigmoidectomy may be carried out to excise (complete or partial removal depending on the severity of the case) the affected part of the sigmoid colon or the rectum.
  3. Total abdominal colectomy: This laparoscopic surgery is used to treat conditions of Crohn's disease  (an inflammatory bowel disease that causes abdominal pain and a host of associated symptoms), Ulcerative colitis (severe inflammation of the colon), or Familial polyposis (a condition that triggers the formation of many colon polyps). Total abdominal colectomy involves the surgical removal of the large intestine (usually from lower part of the ileum to the rectum which is then followed by the stitching the end of the ileum and the rectum together).
  4. Right colectomy: As the name suggests, Right Colectomy, also termed as Ileocolectomy involves the surgical removal of the right side of the colon or the large intestine. The excision also includes the end part of the small intestine (attached to the right side of the colon). The Right Colectomy is used to treat cancer, the symptoms associated with Crohn's disease as well as the polyps.
  5. Rectopexy: In the case of a rectal prolapse, where the rectum protrudes out of its original place, a rectopexy goes a long way to stitch the rectum to its original position.
  6. Total proctocolectomy: This is a laparoscopic surgery to remove the large intestine, the rectum and the anus (the anus may or not be removed depending on the severity). People with inflammatory problems of the colon such as Crohn's disease or  Ulcerative colitis benefit immensely from total proctocolectomy. The surgery may be followed by a temporary ileostomy (in the case the anus is removed or damaged, a permanent ileostomy may be needed) to eliminate the wastes out of the body.
