Tummy Tucks - 6 Things You Should Know About It!

Tummy Tucks - 6 Things You Should Know About It!

Tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgery to make your abdomen look tighter, tauter and more attractive. If your abdomen is saggy, loose and flabby, this procedure removes extra skin and gives the right shape to your tummy area. Below are things you should know about a tummy tuck procedure in India.

  1. Tummy tuck will not help you lose weight: Lots of people confuse between abdominoplasty and weight loss surgeries. The former only helps tighten your abdomen. You might lose a couple of pounds in the process. However, this will not help you shed a lot of weight.
  2. You will need to lose weight before the surgery: You will need to get to your ideal weight range before you take up a tummy tuck. This is because once your muscles are tightened, weight fluctuations can disturb the figure and ruin the effect of a tummy tuck.
  3. Do not opt for tummy tucks if you are planning to get pregnant: A tummy tuck surgery tightens your vertical muscles and this process is reversed when you get pregnant. To avoid losing the effect of a tummy tuck, wait until you are done with all your pregnancies.
  4. Plan enough time off: Depending on the procedure, you will need a couple of weeks of complete rest before you can get back to your normal schedule. Make sure you can take time off. You should be careful to not lift heavy weights or stress yourself physically to ensure the scar heals well.
  5. Healing takes time: Though you can get back to normalcy in a few weeks, your body and skin will take time to heal completely. Give it at least a year for everything to look and feel like before.
  6. Weight maintenance: After you get your taut, flat abdomen, watching your calories and not putting on excess weight is important. This will ensure your figure stays the same.

Do your research, make a conscious decision and be ready to take some effort to make your tummy tuck surgery a success. A taut abdomen mentally and physically makes you more confident and happy! In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

5 Important Things You Should Know About Orthopaedic Stem Cell Treatment

M S Ortho, D - Ortho, MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

5 Important Things You Should Know About Orthopaedic Stem Cell Treatment

Orthopaedic stem cell treatment is an advanced branch of medicine, which can only be performed by a handful of physicians across the planet. If you are considering the surgery and the treatment, you should first know the important factors that can have an impact on the same.

Outlined below are 5 things you should know about the treatment before you schedule the surgery.

  1. Source of the stem cell: The source from which the stem cells have been extracted play a huge part in determining how successful the surgery would be. In case of orthopaedic stem cell treatment, the best place to extract the cells from is the bone marrow. However, in some cases, these cells may be taken from fatty regions of the body and not the bone marrow. This will eventually have an impact on the outcome of the surgery. Bone marrow cells are much more proficient at repairing damages of the bones than stem cells from any other source.
  2. The technique for extracting stem cells: A procedure called the bone marrow aspiration or BMA is used to harvest the stem cells from the bone marrow. However, there is a correct way of doing it and a not so correct way of doing it. For instance, the stem cells need to be harvested using special needles and from several high density spots inside the bone.
  3. Placing the stem cells in the right spot: Just extracting the stem cell properly is not enough. It also needs to be injected at the right place through the correct procedure. The surgeon will use advanced machineries to conduct the surgery, which are essential for the success of the treatment. These could include the use of c-arm fluoroscope, other one is called the ultrasound or may be even an arthroscope.
  4. The correct dosage: This is a gray area, as knowledge needs to be further refined about the precise dosage required for the treatment. Specialised instruments and digital centrifugation systems help in  acquiring and concentrating the necessary amounts of stem cells for the procedure.
  5. Understanding that the treatment works: Since stem cell treatment of any kind is a fairly new concept, most people feel that it may not work as advertised. However, if you go to a reliable facility where such surgeries are performed, you will get to know that not only does the treatment work but there have been several patients whose quality of life has improved greatly. Joint preservation surgery is the field which specialises in management of various conditions by these procedures.

Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD) - How To Diagnose It Correctly?

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, FRCS (edinburgh), MD - R & D, FRCS Intercollegiate
Liver Transplant Surgeon, Bangalore
Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD) - How To Diagnose It Correctly?

Post-Transplant Lymphoprolipherative Disorder (PTLD) is a condition or a reaction that happens post your liver transplantation or any kind of organ transplantation. There is a rapid increase in the immune cells or more precisely, the lymphoid cells in the body. These cells start increasing without any control. The seriousness of this growth can be harmless but sometimes, it can develop into lymph node cancer as well.

The major reason behind PTLD is the anti-rejection medicines that are taken by the patient to avoid rejection and attack by the immune system.

Types of Post-Transplant Lymphoprolipherative Disorder (PTLD)

  1. Early lesions: This will go away by itself, if the dose of anti-rejection medicine is reduced.
  2. Polymorphic PTLD: This is a mixture of different kinds of lymphoid cells.
  3. Monomorphic PTLD: This is the most common type of PTLD found in many people who have undergone a liver transplantation. This has just one type of lymphoid cell.
  4. Hodgkin Lymphoma: This is a very rare kind of PTLD.

Diagnosis of Post-Transplant Lymphoprolipherative Disorder (PTLD)

  1. Small and painless lump under the armpit, groin, or neck area
  2. Night sweats
  3. High fever
  4. Excessive weight loss
  5. Low appetite
  6. Unwell feeling

Usually, it is not at all easy to diagnose PTLD. The lump may grow so deep inside the body that it can be hard to see or feel it from outside. Apart from the lump, others are general symptoms and they can be a reason for any kind of infection in the body post transplantation. It can be a reaction to any new medicine taken by you or a reaction to rejection. Early diagnosis can help you in increasing the chances of a successful treatment. A biopsy is also a good way to detect PTLD, where a small piece of the liver is taken and tested under a microscope to detect PTLD.

Management of Post-Transplant Lymphoprolipherative Disorder (PTLD)
Your liver transplant surgeon is going to work closely with the lymphoma doctor in order to provide the best treatment for you. For early lesions or Polymorphic PTLD, reduction of the anti-rejection dose can give you better results. Your immune system will restore back and will destroy all the abnormal cells in the body. But it has to be done slowly so that it does not cause organ rejection again. If reduction of anti-rejection medicine is not possible or if reduction causes any kind of harm, then other treatment methods like antibody medicine such as Rituximab, or chemotherapy regimen or radiotherapy may be used.

Most Common Types Of Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery!

Laproscopic Bariatric Surgery allows Surgeons to perform minimally-invasive treatments to obese patients who have had repeated failure in losing weight through diet change and exercise. Bariatric Surgery is a procedure that does not require any incisions. Patients can return home within 2-3days without much discomfort. In this procedure, inserting operative instruments through multiple holes along with a camera which displays video images on monitor without making a single incision. The camera allows the Surgeons to witness the internal condition and perform the procedure safely. The three most well-known Laproscopic bariatric surgery procedures include gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and mini-gastric bypass.

Most common types of Laparoscopic bariatric surgery:

  1. Gastric sleeve: This is a more drastic mode of surgery and is a new addition to the bariatric endoscopic surgery procedures. Through this procedure, 90 percent of a patient’s stomach is removed to facilitate the loss of hunger. This also helps in portion control of food.
  2. Gastric bypass: This is the most widely used bariatric procedure to cut down fats and control hunger across the globe. The digestive system is re-routed to suppress the hunger of the patient in this procedure. It also contains minimal risk to a healthy individual.
  3. Mini-Gastric bypass: Similar to Gastric bypass but shorter procedure with approximately equal results in comparison to gastric bypass.
  4. Other procedures for weight loss are: EndoBarrier therapy and Intra-gastric balloon The procedure is decided by the Surgeons and depending on which types of the procedure will suit you the most.

Bariatric Surgery allows doctors to perform minimally-invasive treatments to obese patients who have had repeated failure in losing weight through diet change and exercise. Bariatric Surgery is a procedure that does not require any incisions. Patients can return home within the few day without much discomfort. A keyhole procedure involves inserting camera and instructions within abdominal cavity and operations performed by viewing over the monitor. The camera allows the doctor to witness the internal condition and perform the procedure safely.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery:

Being a minimally-invasive procedure, laparoscopic bariatric surgery has its own advantages. Since minimal incisions are made, the risk of operative complications is easily mitigated. Bariatric surgery is also a long-term solution.

Suffering From Diabetes - 7 Foods That Are A Big 'NO'!

Dip.Diab, Fellowship Diabetology (Gold Medallist), MBBS
Diabetologist, Thane

Diabetic patients should have a meticulous focus on the kind of food they consume. While too much food can shoot up the blood sugar level, too less food can bring down the blood sugar level. It is necessary to maintain a fine balance. It is also very critical to refrain from certain food items which can give a blow back to diabetes.

Here is a list of 8 such food items to stay away from:

  1. Candy: Candies contain a high amount of sugar and largely contribute to weight gain and increase in blood sugar. Instead of consuming candies, it makes sense to satisfy the sweet tooth with food items such as berries, fruit salad etc.
  2. Pastries and cakes: Pastries and cakes are loaded with white flour, sugar, and sodium. They not, only interfere with the proper functioning of insulin in the body but can shoot up blood sugar level in a very short span of time.
  3. White bread: White bread acts just like sugar. Once the body digests it, the refined starch in the white bread interferes with insulin and disturbs diabetes control. A better option to white bread is a whole bread English muffin.
  4. French fries: A favorite to many, this can wreak havoc to the blood sugar level of a person suffering from diabetes. It contains tons of oil, carb, and starch. It raises the cholesterol level and invites other diseases as well.
  5. Syrup and pancakes: It is one of the worst choices in a breakfast. It has loads of white flour and carbs. The butter inside the pancakes makes it worse. Not only does it interfere with the insulin in the body, it majorly disturbs the diabetes control regime.
  6. Raisins: While raisins may not be as harmful as other food items, it still has a detrimental effect on the body. Owing to its concentrated sugar content, it can raise the blood sugar level.
  7. Fruit juice: Strange as it may sound, fruit juice, even if they are hundred percent pure is as good as a sugar syrup. It can sharply increase the blood sugar level and be a major roadblock to diabetes control.

Why Is It So Hard To Lose Weight?
Hello friends,

Welcome to lybrate to watch my video. Today I am going to discuss a very important topic with you. The topic of why it is so difficult to lose weight.

Many of my patients they come to me and they have this pertinent question which keeps on rising day by day that doctor I am trying everything which I can do as far as diet is concerned, exercise is concerned, in spite of all these measures I haven't been able to lose weight such as the weight I would like to lose. Well friends this question would be best addressed if I give you the right quantum of advice and the mechanism behind the reasons because of which weight loss is such a difficult proposition for the human body. You all are aware that all of us have got a very specific temperature, beyond this temperature we feel fever and below this fever, below this temperature, we start feeling hypothermia. So body has got a thermostat installed in itself because of which only a specific temperature suits the body. The normal of this temperature is set for every human being and that is why that normal is normal that doctor is seeking as far as the temperature is concerned.

In the similar manner the body has got an osmostat, the problem with osmostat is but the body decides on itself and what is the proper way which is applicable for a particular human body. So our bodies are accustomed to a particular weight, a person who has got a weight of 80 kgs and want to lose it till 60 it is so difficult for that person to lose weight because the body thinks that if you are losing weight you are under stress and it tries to bring you back to the same level of weight which you are presently or currently rappelling with. So to say it in a very simple manner a person who is at 80 kgs of weight would find it very difficult because the body would not let itself to lose weight because of the osmostat start mechanism. The body will not let you lose weight because it thinks but if you are losing weight you are actually becoming more and more sick. The trick is not to lose the weight too fast. All these health programs the diet regiments you try to follow they all recommend loss of weight as quickly as possible.

The problem is the moment you start losing the very quickly you will gain the weight as quickly as ever in the same manner which you have lost the weight. If you want to trick your body you will have to slowly and slowly bring down the metre of the osmostat and you will have to understand that losing 500 grams or 1 kg in a month is a much better position to stay healthy and fit and lose weight on a forever basis rather than try to lose weight quickly and then thinking that I would not gain that weight ever again. So the idea is to trick your body and if you want to trick your body then please remember that you will have to lose weight on a step-by-step basis and on a very relaxed manner in which you are losing weight consistently slowly on the basis of around 500 grams to 1 kg every month. That is the surest method by which you will be able to reset the osmostat of the body and forever remain thin and lean, a body which you desire.

My name is Dr Hanish Gupta and I am your friend here at lybrate. You can catch me at lybrate, tag me at lybrate and you can always catch me at my Mayur Vihar Clinic Delhi. Thank you for watching.

How Hormones Play An Important Role In Weight Loss Journey?
Hi friends!

I m Shivani, founder of Nutrishia and by profession I m dietitian.

Today I would like to speak upon how our hormones play a major role in weight loss journey. So what are hormones exactly? Hormones are tiny chemicals messengers delivering the message to organs and tissues. They travel throughout our body. And if there is an imbalance in one or the other hormone it disturbs the whole endocrine system. There are few diseases related to imbalance like PCOS, diabetes, thyroid and anxiety, sleep disorders, acne, facial hairs and many more. Now there are few steps how we can control these imbalance. For doing that I can tell you few points are this: eat real foods, eat real foods means include green veggies in your diet, green veggies have a fight to nutrients in it which helps to break down your hormones which are not in use at that particular time. Avoid to have processed and packed foods because it has neurotoxins present in it that disturbs our endocrine system. Include healthy fats in your diet, healthy fats means coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, hand full of nuts and seeds. And the second would be don t use toxin products, toxin products that are disturbing your hormonal system, like use of plastic products: plastic bottles, plastic utensils, chemicals presents in these also is disturbing your hormone. So replace them with glass or steel. And you can avoid using cosmetics as much as possible because nowadays there is a chemical present in these cosmetics is also seeping from our skin into our body and it disturbs a hormonal balance. So use occasionally as you can do it. Don t use it on daily basis. Third would be reduce your stress and have quality of sleep. For reducing your stress you can do the following steps. Now there is a hormone related to stress i.e. a cortisol hormone and if it is raised then you are not able to lose weight if you are doing a good diet and exercise also. So there is a key role to reducing the cortisol have to remain happy, for reducing your levels for reducing stress you can do meditation, yoga, you can listen songs, go for a shopping, and go for a long drive and many more things that makes you happy. You should have quality sleep. Quality sleep of at least 7-8 hours that s make your body s recovery more. So that is very necessary for our body to have quality sleep. The next would be limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine is a chemical present in colas, energy drinks,in tea coffee. So limit as much as possible because it also elevates your cortisol level, insulin level, adrenal i.e. produce from an adrenal gland. So try to limit from 1-2 tea cups of coffee ortea. And replace it with a infused water or herbal teas. Now the last would be exercise. Exercise plays a major role in your weight loss journey because it helps you to balance your hormones, it aids sleeps, regulates your appetite and many more things. So I would suggest to do your physical activity in your daily practice for 30-45 minutes.

So these were the following steps Iwould like to tell you for balancing your hormones. You can contact me on lybrate or you canvisit me on Nutricia i.e. in Rajouri Garden, Delhi. Thank you!
