Sweet lime, also known as ‘Mosambi’, is grown in Northeast hills of India and is mostly available between July and August. During summers, it is hard to avoid a cup of pale yellow drink sold by the street vendors called ‘Mosambi Juice’. The juice is a hot favorite in India which is consumed not only for its taste but also for an array of health benefits it offers. The rich source of potassium and vitamin C offers medicinal benefits and has a coolant effect on the body. Unlike lemon, the juice of mosambi is not sour and it tastes awesome when sweet. The juice is also used for preparing a variety of dishes. Benefits worth mentioning are; the treatment towards sun strokes, dehydration, motion sickness and gout. Sweet Lime (Mosambi Fruit)

‘Citrus Limetta’, the cultivator of ‘citrus limon’ is the species of mousambi or sweet lime which is blessed with a plethora of health benefits. Being a native to Southern Asia, Mosambi is also cultivated in the Mediterranean Basin. It is named based on locations for e.g. ‘Limu Shirin’ in Persia, ‘Mausambi’ in North India and ‘Mausam’ in Nepal. It is green in color, oval in shape and ripens to yellow while having green pulp. Its pith is 5mm thick and its taste resembles that of an orange. Needing tropical and sub-tropical climate to grow, the tree bears fruits between the ages 5-7 years. As it is termed ‘sweet lime’, the flavor of the juice is mildly and sweet which can turn bitter in a few minutes when exposed to air. When juiced and drunk instantly, the taste is sweet and refreshing. It may be compared to pomelo or limeade due to lack of acidity. It is famous in both in India and Pakistan.
