Protein C Antigen Test

Protein C is a protein present in the blood that helps to regulate the formation of clot. The protein C test is performed to evaluate and measure the presence of Protein C in the blood and to check if the protein is properly functioning or not. Your doctor might ask you to get the test done if you had a thrombotic episode, or if you developed a blood clot for no obvious reason. Your doctor may also perform the test to evaluate and diagnose underlying diseases or conditions such as liver disease or cancer.

You do not need to prepare specifically for the test. However, if you had a thrombotic episode, you need to wait at least 10 days after that before you can take the test. You also have to make sure that you have gathered all the information from your doctor and are well aware of the process and the medications. Apart from this, your doctor would also like to know the medicines or supplements you take as certain medications can affect the test.

After analysing your blood sample, the results come out. A high level of Protein C does not indicate any abnormalities and do not point towards any medical problems. Elevated levels are considered insignificant in clinical terms.

A normal level of Protein C in the blood means that there is normal activity and adequate clotting regulation. The normal range is 70 – 150%. If the level of Protein C in the blood is low, it may indicate towards excessive or abnormal blood clotting. This can lead to the increased risk of developing a clot that can block the flow of blood in the veins.

For the test, your doctor or lab technician will place a plastic band on your upper arm; this is done to fill up the vein with blood and swell up. Then, he or she will clean the area with an antiseptic and put a needle. He will then draw a blood and keep it in a vial or tube. The plastic band and needle are removed and a bandage is applied to the area to stop the bleeding. The whole process usually takes a few minutes. The collected blood is then sent to the lab for analysis.

LimitationsIndividuals with heterozygous PC deficiency may have low normal PC levels.7 Treatment with warfarin decreases the levels of vitamin K-dependent factors including PC. PC levels start to drop after six hours of warfarin treatment and do not regain pretreatment levels until generally two weeks after cessation of therapy. PC levels can become depleted as the result of activation of coagulation, limiting the utility of testing for congenital PC deficiency during the immediate convalescent period after a thrombotic event.7This procedure may be considered by Medicare and other carriers as investigational and, therefore, may not be payable as a covered benefit for patients.

Glucose is the primary ingredient within the body which is turned into an energy source. This is what we use when we move, walk or make the slightest movements. To metabolize glucose into energy, your body needs insulin, which is a hormone produced within the pancreas. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes

  1. Sudden or gradual weight loss despite increased hunger - Many people complain that they feel hungry and eat more, but despite this, tend to lose weight. This occurs as the body cannot metabolize glucose and uses energy reserves from fat or muscles leading to weight loss.
  2. Frequent infections and slow healing - If you are afflicted with Type 2 diabetes, then it might affect your immune system and you may be prone to infections. Also, any cuts or bruises on your body will take much longer to heal than normal.
  3. Irritability and fatigue - Another common symptom of type 2 diabetes along with the other symptoms mentioned here is quick irritability and fatigue. This is because most of the body is deprived of sugar and thus lacks the energy needed to function normally. 
  4. Constant thirst and increased urination - If you feel constantly thirsty despite drinking ample water and urinating frequently, this may be a tell tale sign of type 2 diabetes.

Causes of Type 2 diabetes

  3. Nutritional and Herbal Supplements: In addition to a healthy diet, many people at risk for or who already have pre- or type II diabetes will also benefit from various nutritional and herbal supplements.
  4. Exercise: Regular exercise should be part of every diabetic's daily routine.   5. Myrhh (Commiphora Resin): The bark of the flowering mukul myrhh tree produces a sticky, yellowish resin that has been identified to be a steroid compound. It is harvested in winters and considered to act on all 3 doshas and provide an equilibrium in the body. Commonly known as guggul, it translates to "one that protects against disease. That in a way sums up its medicinal properties. In obese people, it helps by lowering blood cholesterol and triglylcerides and is considered a very powerful fat burner.
