Hi lybrate-user, I would suggest you to follow a diet rich in proteins and fiber (like- animal/plant proteins- chicken, eggs, fish, tofu, soy milk, pulses, soyabean etc and fiber foods like- salad, fruits, vegetables). Also try to keep yourself hydrated the whole day and even during exercises. Also limit the intake of salt after 7 pm and avoid saturated fats and junk foods will you reduce weight. Take protein in natural form from foods and not from the supplements as it will give you the results initially but in the long run once you leave the supplements you may gain back your weight. So try to reduce weight naturally. Good Luck!

HIV infection and AIDS (commonly referred to as HIV/AIDS) are caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV is transmitted sexually and through exchange of body fluids, such as blood. The HIV attacks our defense system (immune system) giving opportunity to many illnesses to attack the body. These infections (called opportunistic infections) range from common cold and diarrhea to life-threatening illnesses including uncommon pneumonias and cancers. The type, range and intensity of opportunistic infections vary with the severity of the HIV infection and the extent to which our immunity is compromised.

AIDS is the last stage disorder of the HIV infection. Though there is no complete cure for the HIV-infection till date - despite thousands of scientists across the world working on it, spending countless hours of research involving billions of dollars - there has been tremendous progress in medicare improving the quality of life of the HIV-infected, in extending their life-span to almost normal levels and in preventing mother-child transmission.

The key factors in extending the life-span, and in keeping good immunity and good health are

  1. balanced and nutritious diet
  2. regular physical exercise
  3. correct, consistent and lifelong use of the prescribed medicines
  4. periodic medical checkups
  5. staying psychologically positive and strong
  6. good family support and
  7. good lifestyle habits.

The last one involves maintaining good personal hygiene, avoiding smoking (active as well as passive), alcohol, recreational drugs, unhygienic and disease-prone environments and sedentary life style. Those who follow these will guidelines certainly have better prognoses.

  1. Ensure that the food contains adequate macronutrients, that is, carbohydrates, proteins and fat, otherwise the patient may end up with - protein-energy malnutrition, manifesting itself in the weight loss and wasting that is typical of AIDS patients.
  2. As per WHO, an HIV-infected person has additional nutrient requirements: 10-15 percent additional energy intake and 50 to 100 percent increase in protein intake as compared to a non HIV-infected person.
  3. Consuming micronutrients (especially Vitamins A, B6 and B12, iron and zinc) is important for building a strong immune system and fighting infections.
  4. Try and maintain a daily diet containing rice/roti, vegetables, legumes, and fruits which provide you energy and micronutrients. Choose foods that are low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol.
  5. Eat at least two servings of fish each week. Oily fish, which contain omega-3 fatty acids, are best. If you cannot eat fish, you can also get omega-3 fats from omega-3 eggs, walnuts, flax seeds.

Scrubbing your face will also improve your complexion, adds a glow to your skin and also clears your skin of all toxins. Don’t keep your skin scrubbing daily, it will make your skin look even drier.

Tip 5: Moisturize
Yes, other than keeping yourself internally hydrated, also use a good moisturizer to feed your skin. Moisturizers do not add a great deal of moisture by themselves but they lock in the present moisture and are hence essential to keep your skin hydrated. After a bath, make it a routine to moisturize your face daily to keep it hydrated. Before bedtime, place a towel soaked in warm water on your face and keep for some time. This way the pores of your face will open allowing the moisturizer to soak into your skin.

Food provides life to your skin. Everything you eat in your everyday life contributes to a healthy skin. Only that you have to cut out on some and add some more.

a. Vitamin C rich foods:
Have fruits and veggies rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C manufactures collagen that is responsible for the firmness of your skin. So you quite well understand that lack of vitamin C in your diet will lead to the formation of wrinkles at an early age. Vitamin C is also an anti-oxidant that prevents collagen damage. With Vitamin C rich foods in your diet, your skin will not suffer from dryness, wrinkles and fine lines around eyes or lips. Have all citrus fruits, strawberries, broccoli and red peppers to tone up the younger look skin.

b. Vitamin A:
Who doesn’t want a smooth complexion? We all do, but for that we don’t need to spend thousands of bucks when we have the solution in our refrigerator. All red, orange and green leafy veggies are rich sources of beta-carotene (a form of Vitamin A). It is necessary for cell formation and therefore your skin surface stays smooth and touchable. Carotenoids also protect skin from sun. Turnips, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, squash all of these are rich sources of Vit A.

c. Healthy fats:
Nuts are fatty and are not good for health; that is a misconception. Of course nuts are fatty, but they are filled with healthy omega-3 fatty acids. This falls under that healthy category of fats that is essential for us. Have a handful of almonds and walnuts daily for a supple looking clear skin. Flax seeds are another good option to consume omega-3 fats. If you are a non-vegetarian, have salmon atleast twice a week. This fish is also rich in omega-3 fats.
The oil you cook your food in should also be taken care of. Switch over to olive oil which is a rich source of mono-unsaturated fats. It will bring a radiant glow to your skin.

d. Tomatoes:
Tomatoes doesn’t need a very special mention when it comes to healthy facial skin. They contain a magical ingredient called lypocene which is an anti-oxidant that helps fight old age. It can keep your skin at bay from all old age signs like wrinkles, dark spots and patches or saggy skin.

e. Zinc and iron:
Eggs, lean meat, oysters and cereals supply a good mount of zinc and iron to your body that imparts that much wanted celeb like glow. Zinc helps in cell production and natural weariness of dead cells giving your face a fresh look. Iron is needed to carry oxygen through the body that gives a blushy glow to your face.

f. Fibers:
If you are the one suffering from acne often, its time you think of including fiber-rich foods in your diet. One of the reasons for acne breakouts is indigestion. And the best solution discovered so far to improve your digestive system is having foods rich in fiber. Having whole-grain breads, brown rice, apples, bananas, oatmeal are proved solution to minimize acne.

g. Water:
Drink enough water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. Do not allow your skin to feel thirsty. For a soft, supple and dewy look, water is a must. Follow this diet regime for a healthy skin and cut down on all fried and unhealthy fatty foods.

Navaratri is just around the corner, and it will culminate into Dussehra. Each of the nine days of the festival is dedicated to nine forms of Goddess Shakti.

It is a time of fasting, and it is considered to be the best time to cleanse the body and make the body stronger. Most people who undergo fasting do not consume pulse, grain, and meat during this period which would make the body devoid of essential nutrients. It is important to make the most of this time, it’s also important to stay healthy and maintain a diet that helps you get through the coming 9 days of continuous fasting. Hence, here is an insight into how to carry on with the fasting and enjoy the festive spirit healthily.

Tips To Fasting In A Healthy Way!

  1. It is always better to eat small meals instead of complete starvation. This will help in maintaining the proper amount of blood glucose level and ensure that one does not get tired easily.
  2. Unless you are on a 'nirjal vrat' (fast where you don't even have water), keep yourself hydrated. It is always good to keep the body hydrated by drinking lots of water. Other liquids like coconut water, buttermilk, green tea and lemon water are healthy additions.
  3. As the body is devoid of any regular source of protein during this time, the diet can comprise Amaranth, which is an excellent source of protein. Amaranth porridge with milk or daliya with lots of vegetables can just fuel up the body for the whole day.
  4. High carbohydrate foods like potatoes and sabudana should be combined with fibrous vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes, capsicum, bottle gourd, etc.
  5. The vegetables should be roasted, grilled or baked instead of deep-frying them.
  6. To make up for the deficiency of carbohydrates and protein, you can also make chapattis or pooris with the help of Kuttu. Samak rice is also very good for the digestive system during this time. It should be accompanied with lots of vegetables.
  7. The craving for sweet can be met by fruits, apple kheer, Samak rice kheer, and raita. One should not go for food which is deep-fried or those easily available packets of salted snacks. This is because they are high in salt and fat content. Almonds, raisins or walnuts can be taken in.
  8. Refined sugar should never be used and should be substituted with healthy alternatives like jaggery or honey.
  9. During this time, if a heavy lunch is taken, the dinner should be kept light.
  10. While cooking food, rock salt or sendha namak should be the only salt which is used. It helps in keeping the blood pressure levels in control and also helps in better absorption of minerals.

#Recipe1: Banana Walnut Lassi Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup low-fat yoghurt
  • 1/2 banana
  • 3-4 walnuts (or include Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds and pine nuts)
  • 1 tsp seeds (mix of flax seeds and sesame seeds)
  • 1-2 tsp honey

Method-

  1. Step-I In a food processor, pour yoghurt, whey powder, flax seed, sesame seeds, walnuts, honey and bananas.
  2. Step-II Blend it well till smooth and creamy.
  3. Step-III Transfer into a glass and garnish with chopped walnuts before serving.

#Recipe2: Sabudana Khichdi Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sabudana (sago)
  • 1/2 cup peanuts (roasted)
  • 2 Tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp zeera (cumin seeds)
  • 3-4 sabut lal Mirch (whole dried red pepper)
  • 1 sprig kadhi patta (curry leaves)
  • 2 tsp or to taste sendha Namak (white rock salt)
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 Tbsp hara dhania (coriander leaves)
  • 1 tsp green chillies, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice

Method-

  1. Step-I Soak Sabudana in water for about an hour.
  2. Step-II Drain, then spread over a thick cloth for about 1hour. It is important for the water to drain out very well and there should be no moisture.
  3. Step-III In a bowl, mix sabudana, peanuts, sendha namak or rock salt, and chilli powder very well, so that it is coated well with this mixture.
  4. Step-IV Heat the ghee and add zeera, lal mirch and kadhi patta.
  5. Step-V When mirch darkens a bit, add sabudana mixture and turn around over low heat till cooked through.
  6. Step-VI Take it off the heat, add the lemon juice and mix well.
  7. Step-VII Serve garnished with the coriander leaves and green chillies.

#Recipe3: Sabudana Bhel Recipe
Ingredients: 

  • ½ cup sabudana 
  • 1 medium-sized potato (boiled and peeled)
  • 1 pinch red chili powder 
  • 1 tablespoon peanuts 
  • 1 tablespoon cashews
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves (dhania patta)
  • 2 teaspoon oil
  • few drops of lemon juice or as required
  • rock salt or sendha namak as required

Method-

  1. Step-I Soak the sabudana in enough water overnight or for 4-5 hours.
  2. Step-II In a pan, dry roast the peanuts till they are browned and crisp. Remove and keep aside.
  3. Step-III In the same pan, roast the cashews till golden. Remove and keep aside.
  4. Step-IV Heat 2 tsp of oil in the same pan. Add the sabudana and continue to stir while sauting them.
  5. Step-V Stir and cook till the sabudana pearls become transparent, softened and completely cooked.
  6. Step-VI Mix the mashed boiled potatoes, peanuts, cashews, coriander leaves, lemon juice, rock salt, red chili powder.
  7. Step-VII Garnish with a few coriander leaves and serve the sabudana bhel in bowls.
