Protein/Creatinine Ratio Test

Protein/Creatinine Ratio Test

also known as: Urine Creatinine, 24-Hour

The Protein Creatinine Ratio test is performed to check the protein level in the urine and to monitor how the kidneys are functioning. The protein level in the urine is done as part of the regular health checkup. The test is also recommended when there is a disorder or any disease that directly affects the kidneys.

The doctor may advice you to provide the urine sample at 24-hour urine sample or at a random time, even during the time you visit the test center. In a rare scenario, the doctor may advice you to provide the sample at 24-hour split time. The 24-hour split time urine sample needs to be given once during the day (between 7 am to 11 pm) and once during the night (between 11 pm to 7 am). Apart from the urine sample, if the 24-hour urine sample is taken, then a blood sample is also taken to check the serum protein level or creatinine.

If the Protein Creatinine Ratio test is negative, then it indicates that there is no excessive protein available in the urine at the time when the test is performed. If the protein is detected in the random urine sample, then it may be because of the following reasons:

  • Vigorous exercise
  • Infection
  • Physical stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Cold
  • Diet

The test needs to be performed again after these mentioned conditions has got resolved. A protein in the urine may indicate a warning for a serious issue in the health. An increased amount of protein or persistent amount of protein may indicate a sign of kidney disease or kidney damage. If it is a kidney disease, then the protein level available in the urine is associated based on severity of the damage. An increase in protein level for a longer period of time indicates that the damage in the kidney is increasing or kidney failure. Proteinuria is also associated with many other health conditions and other diseases. The doctor may recommend for any additional tests and consider the results of those tests to determine the accurate cause. The following are some of the examples for the causes from the additional tests:

  • Diabetes
  • Amyloidosis
  • Cancer in the bladder Heart failure
  • Hypertensio
  • Infection in the urinary tract

After you visit the lab, the lab technician provides you a small container to collect the urine sample. After you provide the urine sample, make sure you close the container tight. The sample is then used for testing in the laboratory.

LimitationsComplete urine collections require vigilance on the part of nursing personnel. Ingestion of meat may increase creatinine values of urine collections as well as serum creatinine values. Drugs interfering with tubular creatinine secretion include cimetidine, trimethoprim, and probenecid. Creatinine reabsorption occurs with very low urine flow rates. Entities in which reabsorption occurs include severe congestive heart failure, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, and acute renal failure.1

Obesity - 5 Ayurvedic Remedies For It!

Ayurveda, translated into science of life and longevity, has been practiced in India for more than 5000 years old and has gained worldwide popularity. It uses noninvasive and natural methods and produces minimal side effects and therefore is being widely accepted.

Ayurveda believes that the body is made of pitta, vata, and kapha systems (or doshas) and diseases are due to imbalance between these or predominance of one over the others. Obesity for instance is believed to be due to kapha predominance, leading to excessive eating and thereby obesity. There are various herbs (listed below) that are used in treatment of weight loss, and they all act by burning more fat and improving natural metabolism.

  1. Vrikshamla (Garcinia cambogia): Known commonly as brindle berry or mangosteen oil tree, or malabar tamarind, this helps to reduce triglycerides and control cholesterol.  It also suppresses appetite and inhibits lipogenesis (conversion of sugars to fat)
  2. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra): Licorice has been widely accepted as an anti-obesity herb, especially in reducing abdominal fat. It acts by reducing the amount of triglyceride in the liver and blood. It also contain flavonoids which slow down oxidation of fatty acids.
  3. Ginger (Zingiber Officinale): An herb with varied medicinal properties, ginger has a multitude of health benefits. It promotes weight loss by lowering cholesterol and reducing fat accumulation.  It also regulates metabolism of cholesterol and oxidation of fatty acids.
  4. Kalonji (Nigella Sativa): During clinical trials, the seed extract of Kalonji has been shown to improve body mass index and lead to better waist-hip ratios.
  5. Myrhh (Commiphora Resin): The bark of the flowering mukul myrhh tree produces a sticky, yellowish resin that has been identified to be a steroid compound. It is harvested in winters and considered to act on all 3 doshas and provide an equilibrium in the body. Commonly known as guggul, it translates to "one that protects against disease. That in a way sums up its medicinal properties. In obese people, it helps by lowering blood cholesterol and triglylcerides and is considered a very powerful fat burner.

It is proven that Ayurveda is a safe method to help you lose weight.  Also, please note that each of these above products will have benefits in other medical conditions and not used only in obesity cases.  In addition to the above specific products, there should be a combination of healthy eating and exercise, which primarily drives weight loss. Balancing eating and sleeping to homegenise the three doshas in the body is also very important for effective weight loss. Increasing water intake, reducing alcohol intake, planning protein-carb ratio, and customized exercise routine are are aspects to be considered. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ayurveda.

Does Your Friend/Relative Have Binge Drinking Problems?

Binge drinking is a problem that has been noticed nowadays in many teenagers and youngsters. Whether it is at an event or a party, drinking high doses of alcohol in one sitting is known as binge drinking.

Binge Drinking in Women Is Different from Men

Binge drinking for men is the consumption of more than five alcoholic beverages in one sitting. But the case is different for women. For women binge drinking is defined as a woman consuming more than four alcoholic beverages in a single sitting. Also, it has been found in a survey that almost 75% of the binge drinkers are college students. Among these, the ratio of men is much higher than women.

What Leads to Binge Drinking?

  1. Lack of control: One of the most common reasons is, of course, the lack of control. When such a person comes in contact with alcohol, they tend to over drink because they have no control over their drinking.
  2. The weekend fun: Secondly, another reason is seen in the case of youngsters between the age of 18 years to 35 years. These are youngsters who have a tendency of meeting friends and going out on weekends after the week’s toil. They know that after this weekend they will be able to enjoy their favorite bottle only in the next weekend. Hence, they binge drink.

Results of Binge Drinking

It becomes difficult to check how much alcohol will affect a person, because it depends on various factors, such as height, weight, age and also at times, alcohol tolerance of the person. But of course, there are some common results of binge drinking. Some of such results are:

  • Unintended and unprotected sex leading to pregnancy or even STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) in some cases
  • Accidents that may lead to severe injuries and even death at times
  • Physical or mental assault of others that the person may regret later on.

When Is Help Required?

When the person has a habit of driving after drinking, neglecting family and doing harm to others as well, help is surely needed. Here, short 4-5 sessions with a therapist may help. A regular drinking habit is no doubt a reason to worry. But binge drinking is another reason that can lead to bigger problems and hence, needs to be examined closely too. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Diabetes - Can It Affect Your Kidneys?

Diabetes - Can It Affect Your Kidneys?

Each tiny action we commit involves the risk of a condition, disease or disorder. For instance, sneezing a bit too hard can rupture an eye vessel, or having your face right up against the wind in a moving bus can expose you to germs. Diabetes is as prevalent as common cold in every household and there is no end to the list of causes that can make you suffer from it. While regular check-ups, medications, insulin shots can help you cope, there are certain measures that if followed, can enable you to avoid the risk of secondary yet fatal diseases. Diabetic nephropathy is one such condition.

When Kidney is affected to the extent that it cannot perform its functions(like excretion of wastes in urine, filtering blood from waste, maintaining electrolyte balance, etc.) properly, it is called as Nephropathy. The reason behind kidney damage could be many, but if diabetes is the prime cause, it is known as diabetic nephropathy in medical terms.

A few features of this disorder are as follows:

  1. The kidneys comprise of several small blood vessels, which perform the function of sifting waste from your blood. Diabetes at an advanced stage can impede smooth functioning of these vessels. As a result, the kidneys malfunction or a person faces kidney failure.
  2. Nephropathy brings along some other health issues as well. A person's blood pressure may increase as a result, thus making him or her prone to heart attacks and strokes. Sharp rise in cholesterol and triglyceride levels has also been noticed.
  3. A doctor will check for the presence of a protein called albumin in the patient's urine to know if you suffer from nephropathy or not. Other tests to determine the functioning of kidneys are - S.Creatinine, eGFR, Albumin/Creatinine Ratio (ACR), 24 Hour Urine Protein, Renal Function Tests, etc. A diabetic person should therefore go in for yearly tests.

In a given situation such as this, dialysis or kidney transplant comes to your aid. Both are done when kidney functions are irreversibly damaged. Dialysis can be of two kinds; Hemodialysis or Peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis (also called as Renal Replacement Therapy) remedies kidney damage and kidney failure by using a machine to extract salts, wastes and other fluids in excess from the blood to let your blood have a healthy composition. Dialysis should only be done under the supervision of an experienced nephrologist for best results. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.
