Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibody IgG Test

Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibody IgG Test

Glomerular-Basement-Membrane-Antibody-IgG test is performed on a sample of blood to measure the amount of Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies within the blood. it's performed to verify Goodpasture Syndrome and also throughout the treatment and once the treatment of Goodpasture Syndrome is over. The resultant clinical syndrome encompasses a spectrum starting from mild or no renal involvement to quickly progressive glomerulonephritis. Many patients develop pulmonary hemorrhage, and most people have signs of a generalized systemic sickness. Goodpasture syndrome (GPS) is a rare autoimmune disorder during which antibodies attack the basement membrane in lungs and kidneys, resulting in haemorrhage from the lungs and renal failure. This can be also referred to as Antibodies Immunoassay Blood, Anti GBM Antibodies, GBM Antibodies.

No special preparation is required for Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies IgG test. If you think you have got rapid onset renal failure or pulmonary haemorrhage it's necessary to check with your physician as soon as possible. Your doctor will recommend Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies IgG test as an aid to detect and diagnose Goodpasture syndrome. Inform your doctor if you're on any medications or have any underlying medical conditions or allergies before undergoing Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies IgG test. Your doctor looking on your condition can offer specific directions.

As mentioned above, the test is used to measure GBM antibodies in a serum sample. This helps in indicating if the patient has Goodpasture Syndrome. The normal result for Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies IgG test is that the antibodies are not normally present. They are detected (if positive) in all cases for both genders and for All age groups.

Glomerular Basement Membrane Antibodies test is done using Radio Immunoassay method on a blood serum sample.
• A small amount of blood (few millilitres) is obtained directly from you.
• Before drawing the blood, an alcohol pad is used to clear the skin.
• A needle is then injected from the cleared part to the vein which is visible from the skin.
• The blood is drawn from the needle by a nozzle, deposited in a container and then sealed with your name.
• This is taken to the research laboratory for examination.
A positive test for glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibodies can not be relied upon completely to determine the diagnosing of a sickness mediated by GBM antibodies. Weakly-positive test results could occur in different immune-mediated diseases, and renal or lung biopsy is usually needed to determine the diagnosis.

Type Gender Age-Group Value

Good morning Ma'am Could you please help me with the diet plan during typhoid. Regards Yours impatient patient.

M.B.S.(HOMEO), MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Visakhapatnam
Generally during fever, a bland diet, which is smooth and soothing, is preferred. Diet during typhoid should be given close attention, as it is an important part of the treatment. Gastrointestinal discomforts are common in typhoid; so care should be taken while cooking food and also choosing foods that are easy to digest. Though bland, the diet should be nutritionally adequate to meet daily calorie requirements of the body. The body’s basal metabolic rate is 10% high during fever, which means that more tissue is being broken down to give energy. So the diet given during typhoid should provide sufficient proteins, meet the nutrient requirement of the body and maintain a water and electrolyte balance. This is mainly to avoid irritation to the mucus membrane, to reduce gastric acidity, which would further inflame the gastrointestinal tract.

Myths And Facts About Diabetes!

Myths And Facts About Diabetes!

 1) Diabetes is curable :

Diabetes is  mainly due deficiency of Insulin (hormone produced by Beta cells of pancreas), plus resistance to action of insulin, overweightor obesity  and inactivity. Therefore, to treat diabetes we need drugs that initiate insulin secretion, reduce insulin resistance. In some cases  insulin itself. Plus dietary control and regular exercise to maintain normal weight or reduce excess weight. Hence it can only be effectively controlled. Cure is not possible.

2) Eating Sugar or Sweets causes Diabetes :

It is incorrect to say that eating sweets and / or sugar causes diabetes. Basically excess food intake will lead to excess production of glucose. That puts excess load on insulin producing cells in pancreas due glucotoxicity. Also due to central obesity  the fat around internal organs causes lipotoxicity affecting the beta cells. Therefore, excess food intake in general and weight gain  are the reasons for diabetes.

3) Jaggery is better or safe in diabetes :

Jaggery and sugar both are essentially same. Both contain sucrose, as they are prepared from sugar cane juice. Hence eating either of these will increase blood glucose considerably. In jaggery there are some vitamins and a few antioxidants. But both are bad for a diabetic person.

4) Rice should not be eaten in diabetes :

Not really true. Because in south India this is the major or at times only main food. Rice has a high glycemic index so gets converted to glucose rapidly. So polished rice is not good. Brown rice is better. Quantity should be regulated. All other cereals  also are converted  glucose after digestion.

5)Allopathic Medications Damage Kidneys, so go for either Ayurvedic or Homeopathic Drugs :

In fact diabetes itself affects kidney, particularly the filtering membrane of glomerulurous  (a filtering unit in the kidney).   Even when diabetes fairly well controlled, kidney does get affected. The drugs used to treat diabetes  help in overcoming kidney damage. Therefore it is wrong to think that modern drugs cause kidney damage. In fact some of the other drugs contain heavy metals (Bhasmas), which can be harmful to the kidney.

6) Sugar intake is essential for body :

Some people keep asking that eating sugar is very necessary for getting energy for the body tissues. This is not at all true.  Because all the cereals like rice, jowar, wheat, ragi, bajra and other millets, contain starch as the main ingredient. Hence intake of each of these foods  provides glucose after digestion. So there is no separate need for taking sugar.

Few things to be remembered and practiced are :

  • Always use whole grain flour, as it contains a good amount of biber content for making chapati or roti.
  • Consume more of green leafy vegetables and salads with every meal.
  • Consider fruits and green leafy vegetables as part of regular snacks
  • Take small meals on more number of occasion to avoid glucose surge.
  • Avoid Maida and foods made from it. It is probably worst kind of food that one can consume.
  • Form healthy food habits.

Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex: What You Need To Know?

MD - Skin,VD & leprosy, MBBS

Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex: What You Need To Know?

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex is a genetic disorder that results in the skin turning fragile and blister prone. Any small injury or friction created due to rubbing of the skin might lead to blister formation. In some cases, blisters may occur inside the mouth and on the cheeks. Normally, the cause of the disease is linked to defective genes. The condition is usually inherited and the symptoms start flaring in childhood. In some cases, the symptoms start during the early twenties.

The symptoms of this disease are:

  1. Deformities in the nails of the toes and fingers.
  2. Blisters in the internal organs such as esophagus and vocal chords.
  3. Formation of blisters on the skin of the feet and the hands.
  4. Hair loss and scarring of the scalp.
  5. Thickening of the skin on the palms and soles of the feet.
  6. Formation of white skin bumps on the skin.
  7. You may experience various dental problems such as tooth decay.
  8. You may have problems in swallowing food.

Epidermolysis bullosa can be classified into:

  1. Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa: This is a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa that usually develops during birth. The condition is characterized by hoarse and unusual crying sounds and scarring in the vocal chords. The genes that attach the epidermis to the basement become defective and thus, cause blister formation.
  2. Kindler Syndrome: This type is characterized by blister formation across all layers of the skin, but its symptoms tend to disappear with time. This condition is known to cause discoloration of the skin when exposed to the sun.
  3. Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa: This is caused by a defect in the gene that causes problems in collagen formation. This results in complications as the skin doesn't join properly.

Risks

This disease may cause various complications such as sepsis, skin infection, anemia, constipation and dehydration. An infant, who has a severe form of epidermolysis bullosa, may not be able to survive due to widespread blistering and infections that may drain all the body fluids out drastically. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

Know More About Septoplasty!

The nasal septum divides the nose into two nostrils or airways. When this septum is defective in structure or position, it can cause several physical difficulties like breathing problems, sleep apnea, bleeding, sinusitis, etc. The surgery to correct the nasal septum is known as septoplasty. The surgery is very common and has a high rate of success.

Reason: When the bone and cartilage separating the two chambers is crooked and deformed, it prevents the air from flowing properly through either one of the nostrils. People suffering from this condition often breathe through their mouth and this leads to respiratory tract problems. So, the septum is fixed with the help of septoplasty.

Procedure:

  1. First, your medical history is taken. A thorough physical examination and endoscopy is conducted and the nose is photographed from the inside and the outside. You may also be asked to avoid medication like ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin for a few days since these can increase the bleeding after surgery.

  2. Septoplasty is performed under general or localized anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. Incisions are made on the inside of the nose and the mucus membrane is lifted.

  3. Then, the pieces of cartilage that are affecting normal functioning are repositioned or removed.

  4. If the nasal bone is causing the septum to be wrongly aligned, then cuts are made on the bone and it is positioned correctly.

  5. Sometimes, cartilage grafts (called spreader grafts) are put in between the upper nose cartilage and the septum to widen the narrow nostril.

  6. After this, the mucus membrane is put back in place and stitched.

Post- surgical care: A nasal support or packs are put inside the nose to help it heal and keep it straight. The support is removed after two days but there may be swelling and occasional nasal discharge for a few days. The tissues and cartilage become stable within 4 to 6 months. You are asked not to blow your nose or cough and sneeze too much as these might displace the nasal support. The head is to be kept at a higher level than the rest of the body while sleeping and physically demanding exercises are to be avoided in order to prevent nosebleeds. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ent Specialist.
