Foods that rich in iron are green vegetables, for example spinach, silverbeet and broccoli. Lentils and beans. Nuts and seeds. Grains, for example whole wheat, brown rice and fortified breakfast cereals and dried fruit. However that said, we need to find out the cause of your anemia first. Once we are sure about the cause we can well treat it easily. And mind you Hemoglobin is NOT present in plants. What they do give us is a rich source of Iron, Calcium and other essential nutrients that help to synthesize Hemoglobin.

Dear lybrate-user, Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is 19.1 which is not in the low range but, normal. You may do muscle building to gain some muscle mass. You are required to include high glycemic food in your diet, like Rice, banana, sapota, peanuts etc and food with with high starch containing eg potato, sweet Potato. Also increase good fat in your diet like Almonds, Walnuts and raisins. You require a carbohydrate rich diet. So increase the serving of chapatti ,rice, potato in your diet. You are also required to include high Protein in your diet so, it will help you to gain muscle mass like Chickpeas, kidney beans, Milk, cottage cheese, Lentils, soya etc are some vegetarian options and Chicken, Fish, eggs are some non-vegetarian options.

Are You Cooking Whole Pulses Or Legumes Without Soaking?

Due to our busy lifestyle most of us look for the quickest method to cook the food but due to this we are not cooking properly our food especially legumes/ whole pulses and hence facing lot of issues whenever we are consuming chana, rajma, lobiya, soybean etc.

Pulses such as lentils, dried beans, peas and chickpeas have been staple foods for many civilizations. Yet today, their nutritional benefits are often greatly underestimated. The reasons why pulses are underestimated have been widely discussed:

  • The length of cooking time (much longer than vegetables);
  • Some beans can cause flatulence because they contain oligosaccharides, a carbohydrate that is difficult to digest.
  • Raw pulses contain high levels of ‘anti nutrients’ such as phytate, tannin and phenol, which can limit the body’s absorption of minerals, such as iron and zinc.
  • So, this is why the need for soaking the pulses arouse.

Many pulses are soaked in water from 4 to 8 hours – a practice that will dramatically reduce their phytate content and cooking time and their propensity to cause flatulence. But ensure that you have drained off the water in which you soaked because of high levels of anti nutrients present in it. Soaking ensures that pulses can be more easily digested and their nutrients better absorbed by the body. In fact, soaking dried pulses for several hours brings them back to life, activating their enzymes. Soaking in sodium bicarbonate solutions is more effective to reduce anti-nutrients than soaking in water alone.

Do you always have to soak pulses?

No! lentils and split pulses can be cooked without soaking. However, they may well still benefit from soaking (it stops the shell from cracking and removes any impurities). In addition, soaking reduces cooking time. Lentils do not need to be soaked but it will reduce their cooking time by around half if soaked. Soaking is only required for peas (cow pea, chick pea- white and black), bengal gram, beans (kidney beans, soybeans), green moong (whole).

Most beans will need a minimum of 4 to 12 hours of soaking in fresh, cool water. Discard the soaking water because it has anti nutrients in it.

You yourself can observe if you soak pulses you will realize the foaming in the soaked water. This foam has anti nutrient which will not let other nutrients to be absorbed in our body.

Alopecia areata is stated as a baldness disorder where there is hair loss due to a mistaken attack of the immune system on the hair follicles (the region where hair growth starts). The damage which the hair follicles face is not permanent. However, the reason why the immune system attacks the hair follicles is still unknown. Although this problem is commonly seen in people below the age of 20, it may also be found in adults and children belonging to any age group. Men and women equally fall victim to this disorder.

Causes of Alopecia Areata-

It's yet not perfectly understood what causes alopecia areata. For some reason, follicles stop producing visible hair, resulting in smooth bald patches that can appear overnight. Researchers are trying to determine what triggers the disease, and whether it's from within the body or from environmental factors. There are no diagnostic tests available which can predict the onset and behavior of alopecia areata.

However, there may be some hereditary factors which play a role in hair loss, in about 20% of cases people with alopecia areata have a family member who are also affected. Below area few common factors which are known as a trigger for Alopecia areata.

  • Genetic tendencies

Ayurveda Management-

Romakupagata / keshamulagata vitiated pitta (bhrajaka pitta) along with vitiated vata leads to dis-lodgement or withering of the hair from the hair roots. Further to this, vitiated sleshma / kapha along with rakta will cover and causes obstruction to the hair root, which results in no further hair growth from that place.

A few ways of treatment to reduce hair fall and stimulate hair growth:

  1. Pitta Pacification: This type of treatment is stated as an effective ayurvedic treatment to enhance the digestive system including pitta pacification dietary chart and pitta decreasing ayurvedic medication. This therapy removes toxins from the biological system through effective herbs.

  2. Ayurvedic Oil Application: Jasminum grandifolium induced medicated herbal hair oil is highly effective for treating baldness.

  3. Panchakarma Therapy: Panchakarma is defined as five (pancha) remedies (karma) which involve ayurvedic measures to cleanse the body. This therapy is generally seen as a supplement to the whole therapy needed for treating alopecia. Specific suggestions of Panchakarma therapy are shirodhara (head massage with medicated oil) and Ksheera vasthi, which includes medicated enema (injecting liquid or gas into the rectum, to take out the harmful contents like toxins).

  4. Nasya: This therapy is characterized by the ayurvedic intake of medication through your nasal cavity which then eliminates the impurities from there. It is a very effective therapy for treating the signs of alopecia.

  5. Ayurvedic Diet: Ayurvedic diet is considered an essential treatment method for alopecia. Certain food products must be included or increased in the diet. These include:

    • Food with astringent properties (making skin less oily and reducing bleeding from minor abrasions), sweet and bitter.

    • Lentils, leafy green vegetables and pulses.

    • Herbal tea like liquorice tea and peppermint tea.

    • Seeds and nuts like soaked almond, sesame seed and sunflower seed.

    • Egg white, turkey, chicken, and fish.
