Dark Skin: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Dark skin is a condition in which the natural colour tone of your skin darkens. It may be due to harsh sun light, pollution, stress, hormonal changes, hereditary conditions and even side effects of a medical treatment. The most common way to treat this condition is by the use of over the counter fairness creams. The other options you can go for are chemical peels, bleaches or laser surgery. Do not believe in the common misconception that fairness creams and skin lightening treatments can change the skin tone of your inherent dark skin. There are no treatments to do that. Such skin treatments can only help in regaining the actual colour of your skin and making you look younger.

How is the treatment done?

You must consult a trained dermatologist to find out the treatment that will be perfect for your skin type. Skin bleaches contain hydroquinone that is considered to be the best skin lightening agent. Your dermatologist will conduct 2-4 bleaching sessions depending on your skin’s need. Chemical peeling minimises the appearance of different dark spots present on your skin by the use of certain chemicals. It involves applying high potency acids on skin that remove the spots improving the appearance of skin. There are three kinds of chemical peels. The most used one is the deep peel that uses phenol and gets deeper into the skin. Superficial peel improves discoloration associated with rough or dry skin caused due to sun damage. Medium peel is mostly used for anti ageing treatments because of the glycolic acid present in this peel. Laser treatment can be a fairly permanent solution for your troubles. Concentrated laser beams are applied to the different areas of your skin where the dark spots are present. This beam removes the layers of skin until the ones with the dark spots are removed and therefore, your skin lightens.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

If you feel that your skin tone has darkened over time and your skin is looking unhealthy or unnatural, you can go for these treatments.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Mild dark spots can be removed by following a healthy skin care regimen for a few days. You need not go for any complicated treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Make sure that you consult a good dermatologist who will choose the ideal treatment for you according to your skin type. Chemical peels and bleaches contain many chemicals that may harm your skin and worsen your condition if not chosen according to the skin type. Laser beams can leave temporary redness and irritation in your skin.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

You should not step out in the sun for 2-3 days after laser treatment. Remember to apply a sunscreen lotion with an SPF of at least 30 if you cannot avoid going out. Use medicated moisturisers and lotions as prescribed by your dermatologist. Keep your skin clean at all times by using a good body wash and cleanser.

How long does it take to recover?

Recovery period depends on the severity of your condition and the area that is to be treated.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Chemical peels and bleaches cost between ₹800 - ₹ 2000 per session. Laser skin lightening treatment will cost you between ₹200000 to ₹400000 depending on the area of skin covered.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The results of the treatment are permanent only if you take proper care of your skin and do not let dark spots occur again. However, if your dark spots are an inherent condition, the treatment may have to be done repeatedly.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Homemade face packs containing dried orange peels and yogurt are known to help in skin lightening. You can also try applying lemon juice and honey mixed with milk. Ensure that you consume a nutritious diet filled with food items rich in vitamin C. Stay away from excess alcohol and tobacco.

Under Eye Dark Circles - Easy Ways You Can Get Rid Of Them!

Most of us have had those days when we look into the mirror and suddenly notice under-eye bags and puffy dark circles staring back at us. The secret to getting rid of dark circles is not just getting a good night’s sleep. There is more to it

Causes of dark circles
Inherited issue – Majority of people who have dark circles inherit it from their parents. If your parents have thin skin or high-pigmentation in the under-eye area of the skin, you can get it too.

  • It can lead to volume depletion under the eyes.
  • If you are prone to skin allergies, it can increase your chances of getting dark circles under the eyes.
  • Frequent eye rubbing can lead to darkened eyes.
  • People who have thin, pale skin have glaring blood vessels, which manifest itself as a reddish-purple hue showing through.

Seven effective ways to get rid of dark circles

  1. Try retinoid: Retinoid helps to build collagen and aids the recovery of skin volume and fairness. Consult with a dermatologist and use them to prevent thin skin under the eyes, thereby improving dark circles.
  2. Use skin-lightening products and sunscreen: At times, dark circles result from increased pigment, either from rubbing or sun damage. Try topical lightening agents like Vitamin C, Licorice extract or Kojic acid to decrease skin pigmentation and eliminate dark circles. Also, invest in a good broad-spectrum sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
  3. Take an antihistamine: If allergies are causing puffy eye problems, taking antihistamine drugs will help to clear them up and keep your under-eye issues under control.
  4. Follow a healthy sleep routine: A regular sleep routine with the right amount of sleep time will help a great deal to reduce the stress and as a result get rid of dark circles.
  5. Double up your pillows and sleep on your back: If you have dark circles due to vascular issues, use an extra pillow and sleep on your back to stop blood from building up under your eyes.
  6. Cool down: You can also try to apply a cold compress for 10 to 20 minutes to constrict your blood vessels. Cucumber slices, gel eye masks, cold wash rags and chilled tea bags can be used to make your eyes feel fresh and look brighter.
  7. Follow a minimum-salt dietExcess salt and less water can cause your body to retain more water, thus causing under-eye bags. Therefore, avoid too much salt in your diet and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Snow Cell Therapy - How It Is Beneficial For Skin?

Everyone wants a clear, flawless skin. However, not everyone is blessed with such skin. Most of us find ourselves fighting against pimples, dark spots, acne scars, etc. from time to time. The good news is that even if you weren’t born with clear skin, there are treatments that can give you the glow you dream of. Snow Cell Therapy is one such form of skin treatment.

This type of therapy aims at removing toxins from your body and in turn whitening your skin. It can even out dark spots, lower the impact of dark lips and help treat age spots, dark circles and other such skin flaws. Additionally, it offers a long-term solution to wrinkles. However, it cannot be used to treat skin problems caused by hormonal issues such as acne. This is because it does not influence hormone levels in the body.

Snow cell therapy involves the use of glutathione that must be injected into the skin. Glutathione is a naturally occurring element that is produced by the body, but in very low amounts. It also contains minerals that boost the levels of Vitamin C and a number of other amino acids. This injection must be given intravenously. The injection is administered with quick impacts that quickly distributes the medicine throughout the body. Delivering medication in this way makes the therapy more effective than other skin whitening techniques such as pills and topical creams.

When undergoing snow cell therapy, it is essential to consult a certified dermatologist. This is because this form of therapy may have a few side effects if not performed correctly. You must ensure that fresh needles are used so as to avoid the transmission of diseases. In some cases, patients who are injected with the medication more than thrice a week may complain of stomach aches. Long-term use of this medication may also cause skin malignancy, rashes and hives.

Overall, this form of treatment has a high success rate. The results are not only quick, but are also permanent. However, to maintain the effects of the treatment, follow-up visits may be required.  In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Reality Check On Skin Lightening Products - Why Your Own Natural Skin Color is Beautiful?

Reality Check On Skin Lightening Products - Why Your Own Natural Skin Color is Beautiful?

Skin lightening and brightening products have become extremely popular and are aggressively promoted by film stars, cricket players and fair-skinned models on TV, print and other media. These products promise you not only a lighter and flawless skin but also promote the fact that with this you will be able to get your perfect life-partner and your perfect chosen job! Many of these products do not disclose their exact composition, while some list many chemical names which are simply incomprehensible. However, some of these unregulated products could actually contain ingredients that are beneficial for your skin, but some could be quite harmful:

Therefore, you must keep a check on the following:

  • Many products may contain mercury as a skin lightening ingredient, which is a toxic metal which can lead to brain and kidney damage.

  • Steroids are commonly used in lightening creams and cause permanent thinning of the skin. These chemicals also increase the risk of skin infections, aggravate acne, cause stretch marks, precipitate bruising and make your skin more sensitive and red.

  • Hydroquinone is a prescription product and if used under proper supervision is useful for skin lightening. Unregulated use may cause skin irritation, cataract and unwanted discoloration.

  • Vitamin A derivatives can cause flakiness, irritation and increased sensitivity.

Your own photochromic " Skin Umbrella"

It is worthwhile understanding that nature has cleverly and correctly adapted your skin color on the darker side for geographic, genetic and evolutionary reasons. This pigmentation is actually beneficial since it acts as your very own personal 'skin umbrella' which protects you from sunburns, deep wrinkles and skin cancers. Just like photochromic glasses, your 'skin umbrella' turns darker with sun exposure. You call this a “tan”. Thus, medically speaking, black is beautiful. It doesn't make too much sense to try and alter your natural baseline skin color. Your baseline color is your natural skin color on your constantly covered area like on your lower waist.

In case of abnormal pigmentation do seek an opinion

Of course, for abnormal blemishes, acne, freckles and distinct weird pigmentation you should definitely discuss with your dermatologist regarding proper diagnosis and various treatment options like prescription medications, peels and lasers. Also discuss with your dermatologist about daily products suited specifically for you and your skin type. But you would be much wiser and much better off for not using any medicinal product without proper supervision.

Dark Pigmentation - What Can Trigger Hyper Pigmentation?

Dark Pigmentation - What Can Trigger Hyper Pigmentation?

The dark pigmentation, also known as hyperpigmentation is a condition whereby there is an elevated production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the skin color. The hyperpigmentation can be an extremely unpleasant and annoying experience affecting the overall appearance of a person.

What triggers the hyperpigmentation of the skin?

  • The hormonal imbalance can be an underlying factor responsible for the increased production of the melanin by the melanocytes. It is a well-known fact that the use of birth control pills can elevate the estrogen and progesterone level. The increased estrogen level acts as a catalyst, triggering an upsurge in the melanin production.
  • The dark pigmentation can also be a hereditary trait that runs in the family.
  • In some, if not all people, increased exposure to the sun rays can trigger a skin inflammation leading to hyperpigmentation.
  • The problem can also stem from skin allergies that may result in an inflammatory response, eventually giving rise to the skin pigmentation.
  • Certain medications such as chemotherapeutic drugs, anti-seizure drugs, non-steroidal drugs, or hormone therapy can act as catalysts resulting in dark pigmentation.
  • Skin damage caused by eczema or identical dermatological conditions can also lead to pigmentation of the skin.

Natural remedies to reduce the dark pigmentation
While medications and treatments may be available to reduce the hyperpigmentation of the skin, most people opt for the natural remedies which prove to be equally effective, if not more. Mentioned below are some natural remedies that have produced amazing results in the case of hyperpigmentation.

  • Many people with skin pigmentation or blemishes have benefited immensely from the use of potatoes. Just cut a potato in two halves and sprinkle some water on the exposed side. Now take this exposed side of the potato and gently rub it on the affected skin area. Keep it for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Regularly use this for about a month (three to four times daily).
  • Apple cider vinegar can also work miracles in the case of dark pigmentation. Take water and apple cider vinegar (about 3-4 tablespoons each) in a bowl. Apply this mixture on the affected skin area and then wash off with water (lukewarm) after 5 minutes. For the maximum results, the mixture should be used twice daily.
  • Lemon, known for its bleaching properties can also be used to treat the pigmentation. Take lemon juice and turmeric powder (1 tablespoon each) in a bowl and apply it on the affected skin every night before retiring to bed. In the excitement, however, do not forget to rinse it off with water after 15 minutes.
  • You can also use lemon juice (1 whole lemon) and organic honey (2 tablespoons) mixture on the skin. Wash it off after 15 minutes and skin pigmentation will be a thing of the past. Use this regularly (twice daily).
  • The regular use of aloe vera gel (2 tablespoons) and raw honey (1/2 tablespoon) can also work wonders to reduce the pigmentation. The mixture applied should, however, be rinsed off with lukewarm water after 20 minutes.

Beautifying Your Pout - 7 Ways You Can Make Your Lips Look Healthy!

Do you get embarrassed while you pout for a quick selfie? Well, dried and chapped lips may spoil your entire look. Your photogenic appearance may also get ruined up due to the bad health of your lips. Your personality gets a booster dose when your pout is perfect and beautiful. Lips are essential for your perfect sexual life too.

Lips are devoid of oil glands, unlike the other portions of your face or skin. Thus, they tend to dry up soon. There can be a number of reasons behind dried lips. Blame it on the weather or any disease; your lips are more prone to ill-health and dullness. You need to be extra careful about the moisture retention in the lips.

Here are some of the most common reasons for bad lips:

  1. Heredity: Most of the times, you will have to blame your genes for dry and pigmented lips. These cannot be treated with cosmetics.
  2. Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and imbalance during pregnancy lead to dark patches on the face, especially on the lips, nose tips, cheek and forehead. This is commonly termed as the mask of pregnancy. The problem ends as soon as pregnancy is complete.
  3. Dehydration: Lips get dull and cracked as you forget to consume the right amount of water throughout the day. Dehydration not just affects your skin, but adversely impacts the lips too.
  4. Smoking: Researchers believe that smoking leads to darkening of the lips. It also leads to discolouration of the teeth.
  5. Poor diet: Food deficient in essential vitamins and minerals leads to dryness and dullness of the lips. Deficiency of vitamin E and C affects the health of lips.
  6. Coffee addiction: Consumption of too much of coffee leads to darkening of lips.
  7. UV Rays: Excessive exposure to sun rays is a major cause for developing dark lips. UV rays affect the skin adversely.

How to get beautiful lips?
You can follow the tips below to get beautiful lips:

  1. Exfoliate your lips. Use sugar and honey to make a scrub for your skin. Rub it on the lips for 5 minutes and rinse it. Honey is an antioxidant that restores the quality of your damaged lips and sugar removes the dead cells.
  2. Keep lips moisturised. You must apply lip balms and SPF-containing lip creams/lotions to keep them hydrated throughout the day.
  3. Drink a lot of water to maintain the fluid levels in the body.
  4. Use a humidifier at your residence in dry weather to keep the moisture intact.
  5. Wrap your face with a scarf when going out in cold weather or out in the sun.
  6. Don’t bite your lips, or lick them. Saliva causes drying up of lips.

Hello. The sun tan is a common factor along with many others which cause such kind of skin darkening. Nowadays you get many creams, gels, tablets which claim for clear and glowing skin. Hello. Skin lite and many other over the counter fairness creams use steroids for their gain. These creams do give immediate results, but make you dependent on them and on prolonged use causes many side effects like skin thinning and blemishes etc. Avoiding such creams is the best thing what you can do. But you already have the spots then you can go for laser rejuvenation to remove these unwanted spots. Either way its better you go for a personal consultation with a skin specialist. U can consult me with the pics as well.

I used skin lite cream (hydroquinone+Tretinoin+mometasone) for 1 year and 6 months when I stop the cream my face becomes very dark black what is the solution?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy

Please stop using skin lite cream as it contains strong steroids which will cause serious side effects. Steroid induced pimples, photosensitivity that is sun sensitivity, rosacea that is red face, atrophy that is skin thinning, stretch marks, pigmentation, dryness, severe itching and hair growth on the face etc to name a few side effects. Reports of skin cancer are also there. Please don't use any such Steroid containing fairness creams. You will require treatment to slowly put you off this cream by using some substitute as the skin becomes addicted to the steroid. Hence you are facing such a problem. Please call me or send photos through online consult option for proper examination and treatment.

Use Glycolic acid facewash - Ahaglow. Use a sunscreen in morning and afternoon which is dry and non oily (Facegaurd). Add a very good moisurizer at night like (venusia cream at night) along with kojitin cream (anti pigmentation) once daily at night. If you are sincere, yiu will get a response in 1 month.

Skin Pigmentation Treatment
Hi, I am Dr Sangeeta Amladi and I am going to talk to you about Pigmentation.

What is pigmentation and how does it occur?

Pigmentation is a term we used to describe the dark spots or patches or even general darkening of the skin. In the upper layer of the skin, there are certain cells which are called pigment cells and these produce a certain pigment called melanin. This is evenly distributed in the skin and gives colour that we normally possess. We can get darkening of the skin due to many factors, both external and internal at any time of our lives. Most common cause of external pigmentation is ultraviolet radiations. And one of the commonest cause is a hormone, especially in women. Any of these factors can increase the pigment cells in the skin or actually activate the cell to produce more melanin.

What are the common types of Pigmentation?

There are many common types of pigmentation;

Freckles
Age spots
Melasma
Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation etc
These often cause cosmetic problems and hence require treatment.

Freckles are the common response to sunlight. And you can see them as light brown spots on the face and the exposed parts of the body. They are often seen on the fair skin individuals and from very young ages. They can be effectively prevented by good sun screening habits.

Age spots, also called Lentigines are darker spots. And these are often seen as we grow older, over the age of 40

Melasma is a kind of pigment which shows up most commonly on cheeks in the form of brownish or the greyish brown patches which are sharply defined. They can also come up on the forehead or the chin. Two main factors causing melasma are the sunlight and the hormones. And it is more common in women. Very often, melasma occurs either during or post pregnancy.

Often we find pigmentation being left behind after we develop boils, other infections, eczemas, other allergies, injuries etc on the skin and this is something we called as Post inflammatory hyper pigmentation. It is left behind due to the inflammation that is left behind in the skin. There are certain perfumes, cosmetics and other allergens which can on their own leave dark patches on the skin and we call this pigmented contact om titis.

Another common cause of patchy pigmentation is ageing itself and this is because of the effect of ultraviolet radiations and sunlight on the skin. We often see the unevenness tone or little patchy dark spots and an alteration in texture so the skin gets a bit rougher. This we can prevent to a large extent through good sun screening habits which we should adopt at a very young age in life.

Last but not the least, the dark circles. These are the dark patches which we see under our eyes. The problem of dark circles is that they make us look dull and tired.

What is the right approach to treat pigmentation?

If you suffer from pigmentation, then you should be looking for comprehensive and holistic solutions to this problem. There are many different kinds of products, tropically prescribed medication, and chemical peels which when combined together can help us get rid of the superficial pigmentation. Ideally, it should be customized for you by your dermatologist after the detailed evaluation of your specific skin concern and then decide the best possible way to address it. If we need something deeper then there is a specific laser which called the Q switched andiac laser which is very safe and effective and specifically targets the Melanin in the skin without affecting the neighbouring areas and leaves the skin clear and flawless.

What are the everyday essentials to take care of your skin?

The first mantra to really good skin care is to protect your skin using a sunscreen. You can use the sunscreen of SPF 15-30 or could be higher. However, the more important is how you apply it. A sunscreen must be applied to a thin film across the face and the exposed areas of the body and then left on for 15-20 minutes to settle it. If you tend to sweat a lot, you need to apply it after every 2-4 hours. And of course, you should apply a sunscreen when you are indoors because the ultraviolet radiations or even the visible light which is indoors can also affect your skin and cause pigmentation.
A good cleansing regime is very important to keep your skin clean. Choose a cleanser which is formulated for your skin type dry, oily or normal. You can use this twice or thrice daily. If your skin is oily, you can use a toner for deeper cleansing.
After cleansing your skin, you need to hydrate and this can be done using a moisturizer in the day time and sunscreen itself can be the moisturizer. At night, you can sue a night cream containing Vit- C and this will also help you to stay pigmentation free.
A balanced diet, good sleep and exercise is very important in keeping your skin healthy. Incorporate foods in a diet which are rich in Vit- C and sun protecting agents like Beta Keratins and anti oxidants. For example red and orange fruits like carrot, tomatoes and other vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, spinach etc and omega rich foods such as fish
Relax- Destress-Fill your life with positive energy.
