Celery also known as Apium graveolens is a marshland plant from the family Apiaceae that has been cultivated around the world for a long time. Celery has a long fibrous stalk which tapers into leaves. This plant is now a part of the American, Irish, Japanese and Australian cuisines. It is most commonly found in soups and salads or as a garnish to certain dishes. It is also consumed as a snack as it is quite filling.

Celery is also not good for pregnant women as its seeds contain volatile oils, flavonoids, coumarins and linoleic acid that may cause contractions in the uterus.

Cultivation of Celery

The uses of celery can be traced back to ancient times and records show that celery leaves were part of the remains found in the tomb of pharaoh King Tutankhamen who died in 1323 B.C. In ancient Greece, celery leaves were used as garlands for the dead and to make wreaths and garlands for the victors in battle. Now it is the part of cuisines all over the world. A large portion of Punjab grows celery for export into Europe, where it is used as a condiment.

Celery grows best where the winters are cold and the summers are hot as it is a cool weather crop. The celery seeds are small and they should be covered lightly with soil and watered evenly for 3-8 weeks or started indoors and then transported outside after 2 months.
