Adrenal Cancer - What are Its Symptoms

Cancer can affect even small glands like the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are responsible for the production of hormones like cortisol and aldosterone. These glands are located above the kidneys and have two parts; the cortex and the medulla. Adrenal cancer generally affects the cortex of the adrenal glands. This type of cancerous tumour is rare and can be difficult to diagnose.

Most adrenal cancer symptoms are triggered by an excessive production of estrogen and androgen. Symptoms can also be caused by the pressure put on other organs by the tumour. Adrenal cancer symptoms are most easily noticeable in children as this is the stage where the body is changing and developing. Some of these symptoms are:

  1. Facial hair growth
  2. Excessive pubic and underarm hair
  3. An enlarged penis or clitoris
  4. Early onset of puberty in girls
  5. Development of enlarged breasts in boys

Symptoms of adrenal cancer in adults includes:

  1. Excessive weight gain in the abdomen and above the collar bone
  2. High blood pressure
  3. Irregular menstruation
  4. Easy bruising
  5. Depression
  6. Frequent urge to urinate
  7. Muscle cramps

Additionally, men with adrenal cancer that causes excessive estrogen production may notice an enlargement of breast tissue and tenderness in the area. Women suffering from excessive androgen production triggered by adrenal cancer may notice their voice deepening and facial hair growth. In most cases, adrenal cancer symptoms in women do not appear until the tumour presses on other organs. This includes symptoms like pain around the tumor, a feeling of fullness in the abdomen and difficulty eating because of this feeling.

The cause of adrenal cancer has not yet been determined, but conditions such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis and multiple endocrine neoplasia can increase a person’s risk of suffering from this disease. A thorough physical examination and a detailed medical history is required to diagnose this disease. The doctor will also need a blood test and urine test. Additional tests that may be required include:

  1. Biopsy of the tumor
  2. CT scan
  3. MRI scan
  4. PET scan
  5. Adrenal angiography

Adrenal cancer can be cured if diagnosed in its early stages. There are three types of treatment for adrenal cancer; surgery to remove the adrenal gland, chemotherapy and radiation. However, adrenal cancer can recur and hence it is important to schedule and maintain regular check-ups with your doctor.

Adrenal Insufficiency - Know About Its Treatment Options!

A deficiency of the adrenal hormones is also known as Addison’s disease. This is a life-threatening disease that can affect men and women of all ages. Adrenal insufficiency is marked by chronic fatigue, weight loss, low blood sugar and blood pressure levels, depression, muscle pain and loss of body hair. When these symptoms occur together, they should never be ignored. An early diagnosis is a key to the treatment of this condition.

A doctor will use a combination of tests to determine a diagnosis of Addison’s disease. This includes a blood test to measure levels of minerals and antibodies associated with this disease in the body, an ACTH stimulation test, insulin-induced hypoglycemia test and imaging tests. In addition, the doctor will also ask for a detailed family medical history.

Treatment for Addison’s disease is focused on balancing the hormone levels. Thus, it involves the use of hormone replacement drugs to perform the functions of the missing hormones. This type of treatment could include:

1. Oral corticosteroids
In this case, an oral medication may be prescribed to replace the cortisol and aldosterone. This is usually the first form of treatment.

2. Corticosteroid injections
In some cases, the nausea caused by the disease is so bad that the patient cannot take oral medication. In such cases the hormone replacement drugs may be given via injections.

The dosage of these replacement hormones may be changed according to the patient’s overall health and mental state. Fr example, the doctor may decide to increase dosage if the patient is recovering from an infection or surgery or if he or she is under stress. It is important for the patient not to change the dosage of these medications without the doctor’s approval. Missing even one day’s medication can be harmful to the patient.

Hence, it is important to always have extra medication at hand. The patient should ideally keep a small stock of medication at work, in their bag and in their car.

3. Lifestyle changes
Making a few lifestyle changes can also help. Processed foods, caffeine, sugar and alcohol should all be avoided. Refined vegetable oil should also be avoided as it can have an inflammatory effect. This may be replaced by healthy fats such as coconut oil and olive oil. Include high fiber foods such as starchy vegetables, chia seeds, berries etc. in the patient’s diet. Probiotic foods and foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids are also beneficial. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Adrenal Cancer - What Are The Symptoms?

Adrenal cancer is a rare and aggressive disease that causes abnormal cell growth inside the adrenal cortex. This cancer usually appears as tumors at the outermost layer of the adrenal glands and gradually develops cancerous cells. In the majority of the cases, adrenal cancer is diagnosed only after it has been growing for several years.

Symptoms
While most of the adrenal cancer patients have the common symptoms, often some people feel just fine, unless until their doctors find the presence of cancerous cells in the adrenal cortex through CT scan. Generally, the symptoms of this life-threatening disease depend on three factors, which are:

  1. The particular type of overproduced hormone
  2. The tumor producing hormones excessively
  3. And, type of the tumor

However, it is the overproduction of particular hormones, that makes the majority of the symptoms visible. Below are the common symptoms of adrenal cancer, depending on hormone types that are overproduced during the presence of this disease.

Symptoms of cortisol overproduction
When the presence of adrenal cancer leads to excess production of the cortisol hormone, people start experiencing different types of symptoms. The accumulation of fat behind the shoulders and neck, gradual weight gain in the stomach and chest portions irregular periods, and hair growth on the chest, face and back (in women) are the most prominent ones. One can also suffer from depression, weakness in legs, and easy bruising as other signs of cortisol overproduction.

Symptoms of aldosterone overproduction

As a result of the overproduction of the aldosterone hormone, people generally have feelings of excessive thirst, feelings of tiredness and weakness and sometimes high blood pressure. The desire of urinating frequently and painful muscle cramps too become evident due to the excessive production of aldosterone.

Symptoms of testosterone overproduction
When as a result of malignant tumors in the adrenal cortex the production of the testosterone hormone goes to higher than normal levels, it is considered to be overproduction. The voice becoming deeper, excessive invasion of acnes, irregular periods become prominently visible symptoms of this kind of adrenal cancer. Even, excessive growth of body hair or the facial hair and heightened muscle mass are some of its common symptoms.

Symptoms of estrogen overproduction
The growth of the breast in males and the early puberty in females are the most common symptoms of adrenal cancer where the malignant tumors overly produce estrogen hormone. Even decreased sex drive or impotence in males can be considered as its other serious symptoms.

Apart from the above mentioned adrenal cancer symptoms, in some cases, the adrenal tumors become so big that they start pressing the nearby organs which leads to signs of abdominal pain or feelings of fullness in the belly. The moment one identifies having any one of the signs discussed here, he or she should look for medical attention immediately. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Endocrinologist.

Prostatic Hyperplasia - Know The Most Common Signs Of It!

Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is a condition where the prostate gland gets enlarged. This is mostly common in men who are ageing. When the prostate gland gets enlarged, the flow of urine through the urethra gets blocked, and hence, several problems related to urination may occur. BPH occurs as a result of hormonal imbalance. If untreated, BPH can lead to severe bladder and urinary health conditions.

There are several symptoms and signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Here are 7 common symptoms:

  1. A frequent need for urination: Men affected by BPH feel an increased need to urinate frequently. This gets enhanced during the night and is called nocturia. The patient may even need to urinate more than eight times a day. Due to the enlarged prostate gland, more pressure is put on the urethra, which leads to uncontrollable urination.
  2. Urinating difficulties: The act of urination becomes difficult. Because of enhanced pressure on the urethra, the flow of urine to the penis from the bladder gets blocked. This makes a urine stream hard to start. The urine stream gets weak and interrupted, and more difficulty may be experienced during the end of urination.
  3. Pain during urination and ejaculation: Due to pressure on the urinary tract and reproductive system, pain can accompany urination and ejaculation. Some patients tend to push urine out, which results in pain. The pain may also occur because of infection during BPH.
  4. Blood in urine and an unusual color/smell: Urine may take a dark color and have an unusual smell due to urinary retention. Unpleasant urine smell signifies urinary tract infection. Blood in the urine may also result because of dilated veins present on the surface of the enlarged prostate.
  5. Urinary retention: When a patient is unable to pass any urine, it is called urinary retention. Such a condition requires immediate treatment, and you need to consult a doctor immediately.
  6. Urinary tract infections: Bacteria may start growing in the bladder when the bladder is not fully emptied of urine. This bacterial infection causes darkening of the urine, and emission of a foul odor.
  7. Bladder stones: Bladder stones may develop because of the inability of the bladder to empty itself completely. This is a major symptom of BPH. Hard lumps of minerals or bladder stones are formed when the urine present in the bladder gets highly concentrated, which causes the crystallization of minerals. Bladder stones may cause infections, result in blood in urine, cause bladder irritation and may also block urine flow.

So you see that benign prostatic hyperplasia involves the enlargement of the prostate gland, and results in several problems related to urination and different symptoms. Hence, immediate treatment is advisable. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia - Causes And Symptoms

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition which results in the enlargement of the prostate gland. The Prostate gland is situated near the Urethra (a tube which helps flush out the urine from the bladder). Generally, the chance of developing BPH increases after one crosses the age of 50. But it is yet unknown as to why some men experience more severe symptoms than others.

Causes of BPH
This condition generally occurs because of old age and affects almost all men above the age of 75. It occurs because of the various hormonal changes and changes in cell growth that the body goes through, as one becomes old. Sometimes BPH can set in due to genetics. If BPH sets in due to genetically reasons, it usually is quite severe and affects men before they reach 60.

Symptoms of BPH
Quite a few men who develop BPH, experience no symptoms at all. But when symptoms of BPH, known as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUT) start, they can be either mild or very severe. The severity of the symptoms is not related to the extent of the enlargement. Many a times men with only a mild enlargement complain about severe symptoms, while men with a highly enlarged prostate gland have not complained about any discomfort faced.

Symptoms of BPH tend to worsen due to cold weather and also because of physical and emotional overexertion. There are certain medicines, which should be avoided if you suffer from BPH, as they have a tendency to worsen your symptoms, for example diphenhydramine, pseudoephedrine, oxymetazoline spray and other antidepressants.

The symptoms of BPH are related to bladder emptying and issues with bladder storage.

Symptoms related to the urine drainage from the bladder are:

  1. Strain while urinating
  2. Weak urine flow
  3. Some dribbling after urination
  4. Sudden urge to urinate
  5. Pain while urinating

Symptoms related to storage of urine in the bladder are:

  1. Waking during the night to urinate
  2. Urinating frequently during the day and at night
  3. Sudden urge to urinate, which may be hard to control

It however, has to be kept in mind that these symptoms may not primarily occur due to prostate enlargement, but are the result of other conditions like urinary tract infections, prostatitis, prostate cancer, neurological disorders and even diabetes. Thus, it is essential that you visit a doctor and get the cause for these symptoms diagnosed properly.
