  • Garlic can efficiently help in relaxing the blood vessels as it can stimulate hydrogen sulphide and nitric oxide production. These compounds help to promote the flow of blood, remove gas and also reduce the pressure on your heart. Take 1 or 2 peeled garlic cloves, crush them and eat it in the morning on a regular basis.
  • Coconut water helps to lower your blood pressure. Being rich in vitamin C, potassium and magnesium, it helps in decreasing systolic blood pressure. You can drink coconut water regularly and use coconut oil for cooking purposes.

Are there any side effects?

The possible side-effects of these remedies could be:

  • Consuming too much of lemon water can erode your tooth enamel due to its high acidity content. It could also make your teeth sensitive, especially when you are having food that is hot or cold. Apart from this, the acid present in lemon water can also cause a stomach upset if consumed in a large amount.
  • Consuming raw garlic can cause bad breath as well as body odour. It can also be the reason for nausea, gas, diarrhea, vomiting, heartburn or a feeling of burning sensation in your mouth or in the throat. In case you have undergone or are scheduled to undergo a surgery, consuming garlic and cause prolonged bleeding.
  • When you drink coconut water, you are also consuming sodium. Too much of sodium content can increase your risk of having stomach cancer.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

The post remedy guidelines include:

  • It is advisable not to lead a sedentary lifestyle. There should be some amount of physical activity that you need to be involved in.
  • Maintain a diet that includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy products that are low on fat.
  • Avoid having salt as much as possible. You can add it in your cooked food in small amounts, but try having it as less as possible in its raw form.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol that you are consuming.

The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood to the entire body through a network of arteries and veins. This network contains big vessels which branch out further to supply blood to the distant organs. There is, therefore, some pressure that the heart and thereby the vessels need to exert to push the blood through these vessels. This is known as blood pressure, and normal pressure levels range from 90-140(systolic)/60-90(diastolic) mm of Hg. However, due to various reasons, this pressure could be more, which is one of the first signs of heart disease.

Causes of increased blood pressure: 

  1. Thickening of the blood vessels. With age, the elastic blood vessels naturally turn rigid and less elastic, so there is more pressure required to push blood. It is natural for people over 55 years of age to have higher readings of blood pressure. This is known as primary hypertension (HTN).
  2. Narrowed blood vessels. This happens due to cholesterol accumulation along the walls of the blood vessels. Faulty dietary habits along with sedentary lifestyle have increased the incidence of hypertension due to this condition, known as atherosclerosis. Critical atherosclerotic narrowing of renal arteries lead to renovascular HTN that is one of the commonest of secondary HTN. 

Other Causes of secondary hypertension are:

Blood pressure is the measure of the resistance to the natural flow of blood in the blood vessels. The major, minor and few smaller blood vessels themselves have a thin muscular lining that keeps the vessel supple and aids the flow of nutritious blood within its tube-like structure. The vessel walls resist the free flow causing a reverse pressure that is referred to as Blood Pressure. This pressure strains the heart muscles (Left Ventricle more) to contract strongly to push the nutritious blood into the body circulation system.

Due to numerous factors, there is an increase of resistance within the blood vessels that leads to an increase in blood pressure. At a later stage, this results in lack of adequate blood flow to the end tissues and an accumulation of fluids in the various tissues/organs and a mismanagement of the nutrition-detoxification rhythmic cycle of the body. This takes a long time to develop and unless the last stage hampers body functions, it is not detected. Hence, blood pressure is known as a silent disease.

Systolic and diastolic are the two rhythms corresponding to the expansion and contraction of the heart chambers during pumping of blood into the body. This rhythm creates two distinct pressures within the blood vessels. Systolic is when the heart ventricular chamber contract to pump blood into the body, so the pressure is higher. This indicated the force or strain on the heart to push blood into the circulatory system. Hence, this count is considered significant in evaluating health parameters.

High BP as a disease is declared when three or more readings taken at different times of a day or on consecutive days shows increase in BP. Higher the BP, more strain is exerted by the heart. Since the heart is essentially a muscular organ, the muscles of the heart get affected. Sometimes, the heart muscles increase in mass and size making the heart chambers smaller in volume. This further deteriorates the circulation capability leading to numerous diseases. The strain of pumping nutrition to different body organs is also felt by the heart itself. Health experts do believe, and are promoting the same nowadays, that eating right is the best step to control high blood pressure other than regular medications. Who knows, if you are strong enough to control your lifestyle and eating habits, you may not need a long term medication after some time. HI lybrate-user If BP is significantly high it may need medications definitely. The other means to control BP in addition are to reduce extra salt intake in our daily diet like pickles/ papads/ processed foods. Etc. Keep salt intake less than 6 gram per day. Regular walk and exercise in addition to relaxation practices like pranayama and meditation may help.

You are too young to have this high BP, so first we need to understand what is causing this rise in BP, for which you will need the following Investigations - ECG, ECHO, RFT, LIPID PROFILE, LFT, so that we can find the cause of this and treat acoordingly. Consult with these reports. And you should begin with lifestyle measures and precautions like - 1) Start exercising daily, begin gradually and increase to 40-45 mins. 2) Eat healthy, avoid fried, sugary food. Avoid food with high salt content like chips, sauces, pickles etc 3) Quit smoking and drinking if you do. 4) Avoid take too much caffeine.

How I can manage high bp and anxiety naturally? I am just 29 having bp problem due to anxiety from last 2 years, and also Left chest pain, during ECG test found first degree block and heart is getting thick, doctor as said no problem but go with bp tablet but am still unmarried so I have not agreed because some one has said once ill take bp tablet I have to be take for life long, sir please give me a suggestion how to control bp and maintain healthy heart.

Madam if your resting BP is high that is more than 140/90mmHg, you need lifestyle changes like daily 30 minutes brisk walk and low salt intake. If still after one month of this your BP is on bigger side you are having essential hypertension for which you need medications. If you will not take medicines just because of your false belief it will cause bad effects to your eyes, brain,blood Vessel's, Heart and kidneys. I personally suggest you this. Regards.

Reduce your salt intake, reduce your weight. Do regular exercise, like walking. Take lesser amount pf fatty, fried food. Try to be relaxed. Life style modifications alone lower the blood pressure. Infact, initially, one should try these measures and then only try medicines especially if it is stage 1 hypertension.

Hi I'm 54 years old and suffering from high blood pressure. My normal bp is 140/85. I used to drink wine one or two glass once in 2-3 days. Today my upper bp got reached at 186. I just want to control my bp by some natural ways. Help me out. Also suggest a suitable diet chart for me.

Hello. You need to be regular with the bpmedications. If regular and still bp not under control, need to revise your prescription. Having alcohol in limited amount is good, but not in excess. Do follow proper diet and exercise regime. You need to follow dash diet i. E. Diet with nuts, vegetables, fresh fruits, more of fibre, clacium, protien. Less of carbs. Less of saturated and trans fats. Include omega 3 containing foods.

Hello everyone. I m Dr. Garima Kaur, consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician working at Arshia Clinic in Pitampura, and at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar Bagh. I have been practicing for the last thirteen years, but I would like to talk about high risk pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a physiological condition but in case of any abnormalities in the mother or baby s condition, it is labeled as high risk pregnancy. High risk pregnancy would include maternal conditions like high HP or hypertension in pregnancy, high sugars, or diabetes in pregnancy, low hemoglobin, or anemia pregnancy, heart disease in the mother, blood group like Rh negative, etc. Baby conditions like twins, triplets, IUGR, or intrauterine growth restriction babies or premature babies, etc. High risk pregnancy can cause threat to the life of mother or her baby, so in such situations, we have to have a closer assessment of the patient. Specific diet and lifestyle that has to be followed by the patient is explained to them. They are called for more frequent visits at the clinic to monitor their conditions.

Investigations like ultrasound, blood, urine are done at more frequent intervals, to monitor their condition properly. Any timely intervention that is indicated in their situation is done. Prophylactic steroid injections, if required, to boost baby s maturity, are given. Overall, all efforts are made to make the baby and mother healthy as close as possible to the normal pregnancy, so that even they can enjoy a healthy and uneventful pleasant pregnancy and delivery.
