Hair Regrowth: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Feb 05, 2020

What is the treatment?

Hair loss is a very common problem that people all over the world suffer from. People generally lose a specific amount of hair every day. Losing up to 100 hairs a day is normal. But if you lose more hair than that, you might be suffering from hair loss. People who comes from families with a history of hair loss are more susceptible to suffering from hair loss as well.

Although hair loss is fairly common, it can be a tough thing to live with, especially when it changes how you look. This is where hair regrowth comes in. If you’re trying to regrow hair that you’ve lost, there are a variety of ways you can regrow your hair.

The first option is to try out home remedies that have been proved effective for hair regrowth, such as aloe vera, coconut oil, fish oil and onion juice. Also, paying attention to what you eat is very important. You’re not going to have the healthiest hair if you don’t have sufficient nutrient intake, because being nutrient-deficient weakens strands and makes them more prone to breakage.

Laser treatments are increasingly becoming a very popular hair regrowth option. Laser light treatments grow new hair by stimulating blood flow to the area. Laser treatments also reduce the inflammation in follicles that inhibits them from regenerating.

The last resort for hair regrowth is hair replacement surgery. Also known as follicular unit extraction (FUE), grafts are harvested one at a time with tiny punches that heal virtually undetected, and these individual grafts are then planted onto hair-thin areas of your scalp with tiny incisions.

How is the treatment done?

Hair regrowth is a process that takes time and patience. If you’re trying to regrow hair that you’ve lost or would simply like to improve the hair that you have, it’s best to start with some natural remedies. Massaging the scalp can help to restore hair growth and can be used in conjunction with hair oils and masks. This stimulates the scalp and can improve hair thickness. Aloe vera has long been used for treating hair loss. It also soothes the scalp and conditions hair. It can reduce dandruff and unblock hair follicles that may be blocked by excess oil.

Hair supplements are another hair regrowth option. Viviscal is a natural hair-growth supplement that promotes hair growth in people with thinning hair. It contains a marine complex known as AminoMar C. This is made of minerals, vitamins, and shark and mollusk powder. These ingredients help to regenerate new cells and strengthen existing cells.

Laser hair regrowth treatments focus on stimulating blood flow to the area to encourage growth of new hair. LLLT (low-level light therapy) is a treatment that utilizes lasers, or light energy below a specific energy threshold and within a specific wavelength, to help promote hair growth. The light source used for these products can range between laser and LED devices, the laser devices used are referred to as cold lasers as they produce no heat and are therefore safe to use and will cause no damage to the skin or hair follicles.

The last resort for hair regrowth is hair replacement surgery. Hair transplant surgery, known as FUE, or follicular unit extraction, is a minimally invasive method used to harvest and transplant hair. The treatment removes individual follicular units directly from the patient's donor site, which are then replanted into the scalp.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Losing a couple hundred strands of hair every day is quite normal. But if you lose more hair than that, or your hair falls out in clumps, then you should consider looking at hair regrowth treatments.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Losing a specific number of strands per day is very normal, and if you are not suffering from excessive hair loss, or your hair is not falling out in clumps, then you don’t have to look at hair regrowth options.

Are there any side effects?

Natural remedies for hair regrowth don’t have any side effects. But hair replacement surgery, also known as FUE, has a number of side effects, which include infection, bleeding from the scalp, swelling of the scalp, a crust that forms on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or implanted, itching, numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp, and inflammation or infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis).

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

After an FUE transplant has been made, there a few strict post-treatment guidelines that patients have to adhere to. Patients need to sleep in semi-sitting position after their hair restoration. That helps them get rid of their swelling faster and prevents accidental touching of the transplanted areas at night. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a week, and touching or rubbing the scalp is strictly prohibited. When showering, you will be instructed to gently clean the transplanted area with a special shampoo. You should avoid alcohol for three days following your hair replacement procedure and abstain from smoking for two weeks. When in strong sunlight, you should wear a hat. If the post-operative instructions are followed carefully, in most patients, the hair transplant will be barely detectable after ten days.

How long does it take to recover?

If the post-operative instructions are followed carefully, in most patients, the hair transplant will be barely detectable after ten days. Although you must be very gentle for the first week after hair loss surgery, normal shampooing, brushing, and hair care can be resumed after ten days since, by this time, the grafts are firmly in place. You can also have a haircut at this point. You are able to dye your hair four weeks after the hair transplant.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

While home remedies for hair regrowth cost virtually nothing, other treatments ranging from supplements to hair transplant surgery can cost anywhere between Rs. 200 to Rs. 80,000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Home remedies for hair regrowth are generally not very permanent, and the results may stop showing once you stop with the home remedies. The hair transplant surgery, or FUE, on the other hand, is a permanent process. Once the hair transplant surgery has been done, the newly grafted hair will begin to grow at the same pace as your original hair.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There is no fixed way to cure hair loss or baldness that will guarantee surefire results, other than surgery. Less expensive options can include medications and supplements, but these alternatives may not always provide adequate results.
