Deep seated corns need to be removed surgically from below its nucleus, lest it may regrow. Application of caps may soften it for some depth but may not be totally effective and takes very long to get cleared. Edit Answer

Hello Doc, I'm facing a problem of diffuse hair loss and hair thinning since 2015. I was using levon hair gain but I came to release thar it's not working but after that in 2016 I visited a dermatologist and he prescribed me himalaya hair loss cream, hairless and keraglo tabs, trigaine shampoo and patanjali oil. The good thing is that the shampoo is really nice and it works really good in countering the hair thinning and hair fall problem. Secondly himalaya hair loss cream works very well in making the hairs stronger and thicker. I stopped taking those tablets because it doesn't suits me and my routine. I also took 6-7 stem cell therapy but it didn't worked in regrowing my lost hairs. I also took 2 PRP treatments which did worked to some extent in regrowing hardly 10% of lost hairs. After that I stopped PRP because it was very costly and started doing balayam yoga to regrow my hairs. In order to counter my stress I started doing meditations and other yogas daily. The yogas also didn't worked in regrowing my hairs. I use to massage my scalp daily 3-4 times for proper blood circulation. Every alternate day I used to oil my scalp. It's not also working in regrowing my hairs back. My current hairs are really thick and only fall 15-30 strands per day. The only problem is only that my hairs that are in resting phase are not growing back. I don't wanna use minoxidil at all because of it's adverse side effects. Please tell me what to do now?

•Minoxidil was actually developed as an oral drug for high blood pressure, but patients using Minoxidil were experiencing a side effect of hair growth. •The company developing Minoxidil found a great way to make money from the side effects and they started marketing minoxidil as a treatment male pattern baldness. •The perfect pharmacological mechanism of how Minoxidil regrows hair is really unknown. •The hair growth with the use of Minoxidil will betemporary. Hair growth disappears if the use is discontinued. With the long term use of minoxidil ,you will get thin hair tellogen hair which will never convert into your natural thick hair. •Minoxidil also has a lot of adverse reactions like irritation, Itching, dryness and redness and burning on the scalp.

Dermabrasion - Why Go For It?

DDV, MBBS
Dermatologist, Nagpur
Dermabrasion - Why Go For It?

Dermabrasion is a procedure where a brush made up of wire or a roughly edged diamond wheel is used on the skin to remove the upper layer from the skin. The rotation of the brush causes the upper layer of the skin to come off and may cause bleeding. The skin that comes off is replaced with new skin.

Why is it done?

  1. The procedure may be used to treat various surgical scars.
  2. Usually this procedure is used to get rid of acne scars.
  3. The procedure is used to treat various superficial growths that occur on the skin such as small cysts.
  4. It may also be used to treat wrinkles around the mouth.

Procedure
The area where the procedure is carried out is marked and then cleaned properly. Local anesthesia is used to numb the skin followed by an application of ice pack for about half an hour. If the preceding procedures do not harden the skin enough, then a freezing spray may be used to firm up the skin. Gauze may be used to restrict the bleeding which results from the procedure. The area is then cleaned and ointment is applied.

Post-surgery
The depth and size of the procedure determines, how much time the recovery process will take. For example, a small patch of skin will take little time to heal compared to a full face dermabrasion. It usually takes 6 to 7 days for the skin to regrow, which is pink in color. The color tends to fade away in 2 to 3 months. Usually, patients do not suffer from pain, but if you do have some pain then you can take pain relievers. Corticosteroids may be used to treat swellings, if any.

You need to follow certain precautionary measures after the surgery:

  1. Regular cleaning of the skin to avoid various infections of the skin.
  2. Regular changing of the dressing and the ointment to speed up the healing process.
  3. Sun exposure needs to be avoided as the new skin is prone to damage. You may use sunscreen to protect yourself from sun rays.

Lasers In Dentistry! What Do I Need To Know?

Lasers In Dentistry! What Do I Need To Know?

When one hears the word lasers, the first thing that comes to mind is Star Wars. If only dentistry was as exciting as Star Wars! So now that we all agree on that, let’s see how lasers are changing dentistry and what we have to look forward to in the future. It’s actually some pretty cool stuff, even if you would probably rather be watching Star Wars.

There are several different types of lasers currently in use in dental clinics today.

Soft Tissue Lasers (Diode):

This is the typical laser you’ll see in a general dental clinic and is also the least expensive costing 1-4 lakh INR. It is only used for cutting soft tissue (ex. gum tissue). This type of laser doesn’t actually use the laser tip to cut tissue. It has a glass fiber than transmits the laser pulse which is charred and then heated up by the laser pulses. It is this heated glass tip that actually does the cutting. It isn’t as efficient in cutting tissue as say a scalpel would be but it makes up for that in the fact that there is little to no bleeding afterwards and the tissue heals beautifully. There are a couple of good applications for this type of laser:

  • Frenectomies (for example with tongue ties or a frenum between your top front teeth that contributes to the teeth wanting to spread apart)
  • Removing a small amount of gum tissue around a tooth before taking an impression for a crown
  • Stopping bleeding
  • Reduction in symptoms for cold sores and ulcers
  • Crown lengthening procedures for exposing tooth structure for crowns
  • Teeth Whitening procedures

Combined Hard and Soft Tissue Lasers (Carbon Dioxide, Neodymium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet aka Nd: YAG, and Er:YAG):

These types of lasers are the more cutting edge side of lasers in dentistry. They have the ability to cut both hard and soft tissue as well as some restorative materials. They can cut teeth, bone, and tissue. Each type has a slightly different application and usefulness. These lasers are also currently very expensive costing upwards of 35 lakh INR in some cases. This has limited their adoption significantly. One of the biggest benefits to these types of lasers is that the amount of anesthetic needed to numb a tooth is much more limited and in some cases not needed at all due to laser pulses effects on the nerve. Some current procedures that are performed with these types of lasers include:

  • Frenectomies – as explained above
  • Gingivectomies  – Excess gum tissue is removed for a better esthetic look
  • Laser assisted new attachment protocol (LANAP) – Periodontist’s often perform this procedure in which the laser is used to clean the pockets around teeth and in many cases it can help to regrow bone around teeth, which was previously impossible
  • Biopsies – Suspicious areas can be easily removed with a laser for evaluation by a pathologist.
  • Crown lengthening surgery – Bone is removed around a tooth to allow more space for a crown to be fitted to a tooth.
  • Preparation of teeth for cavities – These lasers can be used to remove decay and prepare teeth for fillings. It actually cuts the decayed area more readily due to the increased water content of those areas. It can’t cut amalgam or porcelain but does cut tooth structure and composite filling material.

As you must have gauged by now, the lasers find a versatile use in the realm of dentistry. They truly adhere to the "No Cut, No Stitch, No Blood" protocol, thus alleviating the fear of the patient. Next time you visit your dentist, just sneak around and ask for the lasers, if any and their utilities in dentistry. Good and upcoming dental clinics keep their technological standards at par with the international community by incorporating dental lasers in their practices. Give it a shot, at least once!
