Tamarind

Scientifically as Tamarindus indica, tamarind is a leguminous hardwood tree that produces dark, bean-like pods as fruits. These pods are filled with seeds and are surrounded by a fibrous pulp. This pulp is edible in cuisines all around the world. The pulp can also be used in traditional medicine. When the tamarind fruit is young, this pulp is sour and green. As it ripens, the pulp takes on more of a paste-like appearance, and its taste changes to sweet-sour.

Nutritional Value of Tamarind

Tamarind is a very valuable commodity in the world, due of its many nutritional components that add to its healthy impact. Tamarind contains many essential chemical compounds, as well as vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. The pulp of the tamarind is rich in non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) or dietary fiber such as gums, hemicelluloses, mucilage, pectin, and tannins. Tamarind is also rich in tartaric acid, as well as many volatile phytochemicals such as imonene, geraniol, safrole, cinnamic acid, methyl salicylate, pyrazine, and alkylthiazoles. Each 100 grams of tamarind contain 36% of the thiamin, 35% of the iron, 23% of magnesium and 16% of the phosphorus recommended for a day's worth of nutrition. Other prominent nutrients include niacin, calcium, vitamin C, copper, and pyridoxine.

Health Benefits of Tamarind

Mentioned below are the best health benefits of Tamarind

Improves digestion

Tamarind has been known to help solve abdominal issues such as diarrhea and constipation. Tamatid contains tartaric acid, potassium and malic acid, which makes it a great laxative that can be used by anyone suffering from constipation. Tamarind is also used to treat diarrhea, as it helps relax abdominal muscles. The root and bark of the tamarind tree are also used to help alleviate abdominal pain.

Helps manage diabetes

Tamarind is the answer to helping manage diabetes issues. Tamarind helps in managing and controlling diabetes, as the tamarind fruit contains an enzyme known as alpha-amylase, which slows down carbohydrate absorption, which otherwise can lead to the formation of simple sugars or fats and can increase the insulin levels. Tamarind also helps stabilize blood sugar levels, as well as reverses damage of the pancreatic tissue associated with diabetes.

Helps reduce weight

If you’re looking to shed a few kilos and don’t want to invest in anything, then tamarind is exactly what you’re looking for. Tamarind has no fat content, and is very rich in fiber. It is loaded with polyphenols and flavonoids, and also contains hydroxycitric acid, which reduces your appetite by inhibiting amylase, an enzyme responsible for converting carbohydrate into fat.

Strengthens the heart

Tamarind is one of the most heart-friendly fruits. Tamarind contains flavonoids, which helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and inversely raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Additionally, tamarind also has a high potassium content, which makes it very useful in combatting high blood pressure. Tamarind also helps prevents the buildup of triglycerides (a type of fat) in the blood, thus keeping the heart healthy and strong.

Fights cancer

Tamarind is very rich in antioxidants. Studies have found that extracts from the tamarind seed can help reduce the severity of acute kidney failure and kidney cancer due to its antioxidant properties.

Helps heal wounds

Tamarind has wonderful antibacterial, antipyretic and antiseptic properties. This makes it extremely useful when used for the purpose of quick and efficient wound healing. Studies have found that tamarind seed extracts are capable of healing wounds completely in as less as 10 days.

Prevents formation of peptic ulcers

Peptic ulcers are painful sores that appear in the stomach and the small intestine. Tamarind seed extracts have a protective effect against ulcers, as tamarind is rich in polyphenolic compounds. These compounds also help in the prevention of ulcer formation.

Clears up skin

Vitamins C and A, as well as other antioxidants present in tamarind enable it to act as a natural cure for various inflammatory skin conditions, including pimples and acne. Tamarind has also been proven to help protect skin from UV ray damage caused by the sun. Tamarind also contains alpha hydroxy acid, which works as a great exfoliating agent to get rid of dead skin cells and clear clogged pores.

Treats cough, cold and asthma

Tamarind is very effective in treating coughs and colds. It has antihistamine properties, which help control not only cold and cough, but are also used to treat allergic asthma as well. Tamarind is also a good source of Vitamin C, which can boost the immune system to help prevent colds.

Protects the liver

Tamarind has been found to be very useful in helping to protect the liver. Livers damaged from drinking excessive alcohol can be treated using tamarind leaves. A daily diet that includes tamarind can not only help reverse the situation, but it also keeps a healthy liver functioning well.

Treats hair conditions

Tamarind, if used in a hair pack, can effectively check hairfall and promote growth of hair. Tamarind pulp has been used extensively to help reduce sebum production in the scalp, thus controlling dandruff and hair loss.

Uses of Tamarind

Tamarind has been used for a very long time both for culinary purposes as well as for medicinal reasons. In the kitchen, tamarind is used as spices and condiments that help add flavor to dishes. However, the uses of tamarind far exceed it being just a kitchen staple – it is used to treat a huge variety of medical conditions as well. Beginning from weight loss, to skin and hair rejuvenation to improved digestive health and even protection against diabetes and cancer, tamarind has a plethora of uses.

Side-Effects & Allergies of Tamarind

While tamarind has a lot of nutritional and health benefits, it comes with a few side effects too. Tamarind can raise the risks of bleeding and turn out to be extremely dangerous when taken with certain medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-platelet drugs. Regular intake of tamarind in large quantities can also cause a significant fall in our serum glucose levels, resulting in hypoglycemia. Additionally, allergy or hypersensitivity is one of the most common side effects of tamarind. There are lots of people who are sensitive to the ingredients of this fruit and end up developing a number of symptoms like rashes, itching, inflammation, stinging sensation, lightheadedness, fainting, vomiting, shortness of breath, etc. by consuming it.

Cultivation of Tamarind

Tamarinds are evergreen tropical trees native to Africa. They grew in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, South Asia, South America and Caribbean islands. The tamarind was later introduced to India and is now extensively cultivated in the country. It is also widely grown in America and Mexico today. Tamarind trees grow well in deep, well-drained soils, which are slightly acid. These trees cannot tolerate heavy cold, but are tolerant of salt spray and can be planted near the seashore. The tamarind is well-adapted to humid tropical areas with seasonally high rainfall. Young trees are very susceptible to frost, but mature trees will withstand brief periods of 48 degrees without serious injury.

Calamansi Juice

Drinking calamansi juice is a very popular practice in certain parts of asia due to its detoxifying ability on the body, the availability of the fruit, and the tart, unique flavor of the juice.

What is calamansi juice?

Calamansi juice is derived from the calamansi fruit, an extremely sour variety of citrus fruit commonly called golden limes. Scientifically known as citrofortunella microcarpa, this fruit is a hybrid of a member of the citrus genus and a kumquat, and is widely cultivated in southeast asia, particularly in the philippines. This sour fruit is rich in vitamin c and certain antioxidants, such as limonene, as well potassium, vitamin a and calcium. Although the juice from this fruit is incredibly sour, many people still consume it on a regular basis due to its many impressive health benefits.

Benefits of calamansi juice

Some of the top benefits of calamansi juice include its ability to boost the immune system, soothe acidity in the stomach, aid in weight loss efforts, stimulate growth and repair, bleach the skin, detoxify the body, lower cholesterol, manage diabetes and treat respiratory infections, among others.

1. Controls cholesterol levels

Anecdotal evidence and some studies have found that this juice can help you lower your cholesterol levels, which is an important steptoward weight loss and avoiding metabolic syndrome. It can also help lower your risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke.

2. Boosts immunity

Packed with vitamin c and other beneficial nutrients, calamansi juice has been used as an immune booster for generations. It can stimulate the production of white blood cells and counter the negative effects of free radicals, thanks to its antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

3. lowers acidity

Despite the high levels of citric acid and apparent acidity of this fruit, many people drink it as a soothing substance for the stomach. It can lower levels of inflammation, when consumed in moderation, lower your risk of developing ulcers and protect you from acid reflux disease.

4. Promotes collagen production

Vitamin c is a crucial element in collagen production, which is the compound needed to create every tissue, muscle fiber and cell in the body. This juice can deliver a burst of ascorbic acid that will increase your body’s ability to grow, as well as repair damage from injury, illness or surgery.

5. Controls diabetes

A significant amount of research has been done on the blood sugar-moderating effectsof calamansi juice. It can help to regulate the release of glucose and insulin into the bloodstream, which is excellent news for those suffering from diabetes or those at risk of developing the disease.

6. Improves respiratory health

The strong citric acid levels in this juice help itcut through phlegm and mucus, where infections often live and propagate, while also soothing inflammation in the throat and respiratory tracts.

7. Skin care

All over asia, people use calamansi juice on their skin, as it functions like a natural bleaching agent. In addition to clearing the skin of blemishes or discoloration, it can also deliver antioxidants to the skin that will prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging.

8. Detoxifies the body

Known to stimulate urination and flush outthe kidneys, calamansi juice can be a powerful detoxifying agent, strengthening the function of your liver, kidneys and gallbladder to help you eliminate excess toxins in the body.

How to make calamansi juice?

You can easily make calamansi juice at home, provided you have access to these exotic fruits. Outside of southeast asia, your best chance of finding these fruits is in exotic grocery stores or import stores.

Recipe

Ingredients:

12-14 calamansi fruits2 cups of sugar, refined2 cups of water, filtered

Step 1 – thoroughly wash all of the limes.

Step 2 – slice off the top of the limes, being careful not to cut into the seeds.

Step 3 – using your hands, squeeze out as much juice as possible from the limes into a strainer.

Step 4 – add the sugar and water and stir thoroughly.

Step 5 – taste the juice, and if it is too astringent or sour, add more sugar or water. Some people add honey in significant quantities (1 cup) to balance out the taste.

Step 6 – refrigerate the juice, serve chilled and enjoy!

Calamansi juice for weight loss

This tropical juice is legendary for its impact on weight loss, as it has the ability to not only boost the metabolism, but also eliminate many of the toxins in the body that can contribute to fat storage. By increasing metabolic speed, this juice can improve passive fat-burning throughout the day, while detoxifying the body will help all of your organ systems run more smoothly and function properly, aiding in calorie burning. By reducing fat storage, you will have more usable energy and less adipose fat formation. Many people drink a glass of calamansi juice every morning to stimulate the body and achieve weight-loss goals.

Calamansi juice substitute

If you are in certain parts of the world, getting your hands on fresh calamansi limes may be difficult, in which case you will want to replace this juice in recipes or in your morning juice. These substitutes can mimic the acidity and tartness, and even deliver some of the same health benefits. The best substitutes for calamansi juice include regular lime juice, white wine vinegar, white wine, tamarind or black lime.

Side effects calamansi juice

This simple juice has many impressive health benefits, but can also cause a few side effects, including gastrointestinal distress and a heightened risk of kidney problems.

Stomach issues – while many people praise calamansi juice for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties, it is still a very astringent and potentially irritating substance for the stomach. If you have a sensitive gut, be sure to moderate your intake of calamansi juice to prevent acid reflux, diarrhea, stomach upset and cramping. Kidney health – with a high level of vitamin c and the ability to stimulate urination, this fruit juice can detoxify the body, but for people with kidney issues, diuretics can lead to numerous complications and even a worsening of your condition, so speak with a doctor first.

Ayurveda has clear opinion and rules on the use of Madya - the Alcohol. Ayurveda has defined views on npreparation of Herbal wines called Asavas and Arishtas. Western Herbalism also uses tinctures etc in the same way as Ayurveda to extract active ingradients of herbs.

In Ayurveda MADATYA ROGA is associated with effects of alcoholism. Ayurveda's herbal bitters like Neem, Guduchi, Bhuiamla, Kalmegh, Amla and many others not only protect and cure liver inflammation by Pittavirechan and detoxification but there are other home remedies like dates, raisins, Kokum butter, tamarind fruit, pomegranates, Amla etc which may be combined as powder and taken with 100ml of boiled, cooled water. It may be taken soon after alcohol intake or at bed time or in the morning. Make it fresh because it cant be stored for long. Amalvetas,Tvak, Ela, Marich, Safed Jeera, Souvarchal Namak, Vrikshamala, Sugar effectively overcomes hangover.

SO I MAY SAY THAT RESONSIBLE DRINKING AND USE OF HERBS ARE WISER STEPS TO COMBAT EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLISM.

Customised and readymade Ayurvedic Solutions are available for prevention and cure of Hangover and Liver affliction.
