Helps in digestion

Marrow vegetable, just like other species of gourds, is rich in dietary fiber. The dietary fiber helps to add bulk to the stool and facilitates its easy movement. When stool gets eliminated easily, chances of developing symptoms of gas or constipation are substantially reduced. Dietary fiber thus has a number of gastrointestinal benefits.

Helps to prevent cancer

Marrow vegetable has a potent combination of ascorbic acid, carotene and other anti-oxidants that help to prevent certain forms of cancer. These anti-oxidants act against the free radicals that cause oxidative stress to the cells and mutate the D.N.A. Thus it hampers the conversion of healthy cells to cancerous cells. Incorporating marrow helps to prevent various types of cancer like stomach, lung and colon cancer.

Helps improve heart health

Marrow has rich content of fiber that helps to eliminate the bad cholesterol from our blood and regulates the cholesterol levels in our blood. This decreases chances of developing atherosclerosis, strokes and heart attacks. Marrow also contains Vitamin C which aids in the formation of collagen, which is the basic component of all vital things in the body like blood vessels, cells and muscles. This helps to keep the heart in good shape.

Helps you to lose weight

The fiber content in marrow ensures that you feel full for a longer period of time and eliminates the chances of overeating or frequent eating. Fiber is also rich in water and other nutrients that help you to lose weight.

Good for your bones

Marrow vegetable has a number of beneficial nutrients which increase bone mineral density and thus helps to strengthen your bones. Marrow has calcium which strengthens our bones while Vitamin C ensures that calcium is properly absorbed by the bones. Thus people suffering from osteoporosis and other bon disorders can include marrow n their diet.

Prevents anemia

Deficiency of iron can cause anemia which is characterized by fatigue, weakness, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, pale skin and various other symptoms. Eating marrow helps to overcome these problems as it is rich in iron. Iron helps to produce haemoglobin which oxygenates our tissues and cells and thus prevents anemia.

Hi, My son have blood cancer and doctor suggest bone marrow transplant treatment. His age is 4 years and we already did HLA match. His sister is donor for that process her age is 11 years. The HLA report is Half match (50%).so I want to know in half match BMT is possible. What is risk and how much success ratio in this conditions, and how much it cost ,how much time it will take to recover. Please give me answer as soon as possible. Thank u.

Dear lybrate-user Thank you for reaching out. Sad to hear about your sons condition and hope he does well. A half match transplant is what your doctor would have referred to as a haplo transplant. This is an emerging treatment option when full matched donors are not available. This is a reasonable option in experienced hands. However the success and risk ratio of any transplant depends on the underlying disease of your son though it is generally conveyed the percentages with a haplo transplant are limited in comparison to a fully matched transplant. Hope this answers your question. Wishing you and your son the best.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. The term "chronic" in chronic lymphocytic leukemia comes from the fact that it typically progresses more slowly than other types of leukemia. Prognosis and survival for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. People with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) may have questions about their prognosis and survival. Prognosis and survival depend on many factors. A prognosis is the doctor's best estimate of how cancer will affect a person, and how it will respond to treatment. The side effects of chemotherapy depend on the individual and the dose used, but they can include fatigue, risk of infection, nausea and vomiting, hair loss, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. These side effects usually go away once treatment is finished. Angioplasty is a procedure to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. These blood vessels are called the coronary arteries. A coronary artery stent is a small, metal mesh tube that expands inside a coronary artery. Age is certainly a consideration for such strenuous surgery. Research shows older people are more likely to die during or after the operation than younger patients. And elderly patients who survive a bypass can expect longer recovery times.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - Causes, Symptoms and Homeopathy Treatment

A chronic systemic disease characterized by inflammatory changes in joints & related structures that result in crippling deformities. Diseases primarily affecting the synovium & adjacent tissues.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks the joints producing an inflammatory synovitis that often progresses to destruction of the articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also produce diffuse inflammation in the lungs, pericardium, pleura, and sclera and also nodular lesions, most common in subcutaneous tissue under the skin. Although the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, autoimmunity plays a pivotal role in its chronicity and progression.

Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis:

  1. Exact cause is not known.
  2. Evidence points to autoimmune etiology.
  3. Genetic predisposition common.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include:

  1. Tender, warm, swollen joints
  2. Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity
  3. Fatigue, fever and weight loss

Early rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect your smaller joints first — particularly the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet.

As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body.

About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don't involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including:

  • Skin
  • Eyes
  • Lungs
  • Heart
  • Kidneys
  • Salivary glands
  • Nerve tissue
  • Bone marrow
  • Blood vessels

Rheumatoid arthritis signs and symptoms may vary in severity and may even come and go.Over time, rheumatoid arthritis can cause joints to deform and shift out of place.

Homeopathic Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions.

In allopathy, there is no effective treatement for rheumatoid arthritis except painkillers and steroids that hampers the overall dynamic power of the body. Homoeopathy is a safe and effective alternative that targets the root cause of the problem and treats holistically.

The Scope of homeopathic treatment in rheumatoid arthritis is very favorable. But the patient needs to understand that the homeopathic system is aiming to clear out the disease from the body and not trying merely to suppress or give temporary relief. Thus it could take a while before one experiences relief. The time for its treatment is dependent on various factors- The chronicity of the disease (the duration since the disease has been in the body), genetic propensity and the extent of damage. Homoeopathy can hit the autoimmunity and starts with a better pain relief and can also help you to get rid of painkiller and if treatment continued systemically then may also help you to get rid of steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs leading to better mobility and better quality of life.

What kind of homeopathic medicines are used in treating rheumatoid arthritis and how safe are they?

Homeopathy works on the principle of ‘like cure like ‘ this in homeopathic terms means that substances which in their raw states produce symptoms similar to the disease have the potential to stimulate the body’s own restorative process for a similar illness when given in an activated dilution.

Homeopathic medicines that are used in treating rheumatoid arthritis are mainly from all plant, mineral kingdom. They are then highly diluted and succused (shaken in a specific way). These activated dilutions then stimulates our body’s own restorative systems to eradicate the disease. When rightly prescribed, they are extremely safe. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Tips for Healthy Bones

India hobbles to second place in hip fractures with 4.4 lakh people falling prey every year. Currently, india has approximately 36 million osteoporosis patients.

  • Osteoporotic patients suffer fractures because of weak bones, leading to temporary or permanent disability, and even death.
  • Importance of bones
  • Bones and the skeleton play many important roles in the body.
  • Store and supply calcium as needed for all of the cells and organs of the body
  • Give our bodies support and muscle attachments which allow us to move and use our limbs
  • Enclose and protect our vital organs
  • Provide space for bone marrow, where all types of blood and bone cells are made.
  • There are things you can do to maintain and even improve your bone strength.
  • Understand your individual risk for fracture. This is based on any risk factors you have for fracture and your bone density. Ask your doctor if you need a bone density test.
  • Understand your individual risk for bone loss. Genetics plays a role in bone health, and some people have genetically determined high rates of bone turnover after menopause or with aging. Talk to your doctor about bone metabolism testing. Bone metabolism testing can provide additional information about your risk for fracture.
  • Be active every day. Strength-building and weight-bearing activities help build strong bones. Children should exercise at least an hour each day, and adults should total 30 minutes of daily activity.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Older adults who are overweight have a higher risk for falling. Being underweight raises the risk of bone loss.
  • Get enough calcium and vitamin d.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking can reduce bone mass and increase your risk for a broken bone.
  • Limit alcohol use. Heavy alcohol use reduces bone mass and increases your risk for broken bones.
  • Reduce your risk of falling. There are many changes your can make in your home to help prevent a fall. Remove obstacles and add safety features — such as grab bars and non-slip mats — where needed.
  • Consider bone-boosting medications. In addition to calcium and vitamin d supplements, there are many drug options that slow bone loss and increase bone strength. Talk to your doctor about these methods for protecting your bones.

Dialysis May Save Your Life!

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, DM - Nephrology, DNB (Nephrology)
Nephrologist, Delhi
Dialysis May Save Your Life!

Located right under the rib cage, kidneys are a very important organ of the body. They are not only responsible for purifying your blood from wastes and excess fluid but are also involved in maintaining electrolyte balance, regulating blood pressure and producing red blood cell in the body.

In many cases, due to some medical condition, one or both kidneys may stop functioning properly. If not treated in time, it may lead to complete kidney failure and if the kidneys fail completely, dialysis or transplant may be the only treatment options available.

Dialysis is a treatment in which the blood is filtered and purified artificially using machines. This process is beneficial for those whose kidneys are not able to do their job properly.

Need for dialysis

A functioning kidney prevents the accumulation of excess water, impurities, and wastes inside the body. They also work to maintain the blood pressure level and control the presence of certain chemicals like sodium and potassium.

When the kidneys fail to perform these critical functions, maybe because of some disease or injury, dialysis helps to keep up the healthy functioning of the body as much as possible. As without dialysis all the wastes and fluids will accumulate and poison the body, resulting even in death. However, it must be kept in mind that dialysis is not a cure for kidney diseases; it is just an alternative to their functions.

Types of dialysis
Dialysis is an artificial process of purifying your blood using machines. There are two types of dialysis:

Hemodialysis
This is one of the most common types of dialysis, where an artificial kidney, known as a hemodialyzer, is used to remove waste and chemicals from the blood. The doctor surgically creates a vascular access into the blood vessels allowing the artificial kidney to perform.

Peritoneal Dialysis
This is a surgical procedure, where a catheter is implanted in the belly area. The treatment involves a special fluid called dialysate which is flowed into the abdomen to clean the blood. Once the blood is cleaned, the fluid is drained from the abdomen. The benefit of this treatment is that you can perform it in your home, without going to a hospital.

Risks in Dialysis
Even though either of these two treatment procedures is life-saving and there is hardly any alternative, these two can also come with risks. The risks include peritonitis, abdominal muscle weakening, high blood sugar level, weight gain, low blood pressure anemia, muscle cramping, insomnia, itching, depression, increased potassium level and pericarditis. If you experience any of these symptoms of the risks involved, then immediately consult your doctor and explain in details.

A patient who is going through dialysis for a long time also has a chance of succumbing to the medical condition called amyloidosis. When the amyloid proteins, which are produced in bone marrow, collects in kidneys, hearts, liver and other organs, amyloidosis occurs. This results in joint pain, stiffness and even swelling.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
