Briefing on Indigestion

Doston, indigestion, badhajmi, ajeern, apacch yeh naam aksar apne sune honge. Kya hota hai isme aap jo khana khate hain wo khana purn roop se pachta nahi hai, jab khana pachega nahi toh anek prakar ke symptoms aapko ho sakte hain. Aapko pet mein gas ho sakti hai, aapko acidity ho sakti hai, pet me bharipan ho sakta hai, pet mein dard bhi ho jata hai of course undigested food jab hota hai hamare small intestine ke andar toh wahan par ek vishala tatva banta hai jisko hum aam bolte hain. Is tarah se hum apne pachan ko thik kar sakte hain? Simple cheeze hai jo aapki rasoi mein maujood hai, yadi aap hara dhaniya aur hara pudina le uska dono ka mila karke sambhag mein uski chatni bana lijiye thodi si taji adrak bhi peesenge thoda sa aur accha taste bhi aayega aur nimbu thoda sa usme daliye, khatta taste bhi aayega very tasty khane ke saath kha sakte hain pachan ke liye bahut achhi hai. Sauf, jira, dhaniya aur pudina sab barabar-barabar 20-20 gram le lijiye isme 10 gram aap milaye kala namak aur 5 gram isme milaye hing aur thoda sa anardana 10 gram ke kareeb woh bhi isme millaye bahut tasty aap ka churan banega. Tasty bhi hai digestive bhi hai, yeh aap bana sakte hai bilkul. Bhojan se pahale taje adrak ke tukde thoda sa nimbu ke ras mein mila kar ke unko sevan karne se bhi aap ki agni bhi pradeept hoti hai aur aap ka bhojan bhi thik se pachta hai. Lekin dhyan rahe ki hamesha jo hai uchit matra me bhojan karna hai, aisi cheeze combine na kare jo bahut heavy hai aapas mein, idhar mithai bhi kha rahe hain, fried cheeze bhi kha rahe hain aur bahut jyada garisht bhojan bhi sevan kar rahe hain aisa nahi karna hai. Aur niyamit roop se aapko exercise zaroor karni hai, exercise karne se bhi hamara pachan thik hota hai aur hamari agni jo hai woh majboot hoti hai. Toh choti-choti si cheeze hain lekin bahut important hai hamara pachan sansthan. Yadi hamara digestive system thik rahega, toh hum bahut sare rogo se bilkul apne aap ko bacha karke rakh sakte hain.

Arthritis - How Different Ways Can Help You Manage It?

Inflammation and resultant pain in the joints are usually the basic tenets of Arthritis. This joint disorder can be painful and often, a debilitating one. It can also make the joints stiff. There are many ways of dealing with this problem, but with Ayurveda, one can get to the root cause of the ailment and its presence. This helps in taking a well rounded holistic approach towards treating it with ancient know how that revolves around herbs and other natural substances which have great medicinal value, lifestyle changes, diet, exercise and Yoga, oil massages, and other methods. Arthritis is known as Sandhivat in Ayurvedic jargon.

Read on to find out how Ayurveda can help in dealing with Arthritis.

  • Herbs: One can make use of various herbs that contain Linoleic Acid to help in providing lubrication to the joints so as to prevent pain and stiffness. These herbs include Borage seed oil which is extracted from borage seed, Evening Primrose oil, Blackcurrant seed oil, Capsaicin, Curcumin, Feverfew, Flaxseed oil and a standard Ayurvedic concoction that combines Ashwagandha, Gugulla, ginger, cumin and haldi or turmeric. These substances can help in treating the joints that are suffering from the pain of Arthritis.
  • Diet: In Ayurveda, to treat ailments like Arthritis, it is usually recommended that a patient should start by flushing out the bodily toxins from within. Diet is one of the ways in which this can be done. A detoxification diet to clean the colon would be one of the foremost ways of doing a cleanse. Further, in one's daily diet, there should be a good dose of vegetables, fruits and other juices. Also, one must have plenty of herbs and spices which can be used to season the food. Curd should generally be avoided and garlic should be used liberally. The various properties help in an inside-out cleanse that will help the system function in a better manner so that the treatment of ailments is also effectively supported.
  • Exercise: In Ayurveda, a certain amount of daily exercise which spans at least 45 minutes to one hour, is a must. A pattern of healthy eating, restful sleep and exercise is what usually helps in treating ailments like Arthritis. For this ailment specifically, light exercise like walking is recommended. Various Yoga asanas that involve sitting, standing, balancing and lying down poses as well as restful poses will also help in treating knee, shoulder and lower back pain specifically. Also, mustard oil massages can help in reducing the pain.

These are a few ways in which Ayurveda can help the Arthritis patient live a more normal life with minimal pain.

Acidity - How Lifestyle & Diet Changes Can Help?

Gastritis/ acidity is usually mild and can be cured easily by following better food habits and regular healthy lifestyle. However, sometime gastritis can cause pain in the upper part of the abdomen and may lead to stomach ulcers. Few over-the-counter (otc) antacid medicines and a set of do's and don'ts can relieve gastritis.

Some of the lifestyle and dietary changes are as follows:

Lifestyle / dietary changes:

  1. Excess spicy food and use of painkillers, alcohol, cigarettes and acidic beverages lead to symptoms of gastritis. To get rid of symptoms of gastritis, one should follow these simple remedies.
  2. Eat food in smaller quantity and switch to several small meals.
  3. Painkillers lead to ulcers in your stomach and cause bleeding. So, avoid unnecessary use of painkillers.
  4. Kapalabhati, bhastrika and anulomaviloma yoga increases movement of body and organs, helpful in the treatment of gastritis.

Foods to be taken:
A healthy meal plan with low unhealthy fat, salt, and added sugar helps in relieving gastritis. Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat dairy foods. Lean meat, poultry (chicken and turkey), fish, beans, eggs, and nuts are also advised to gastritis patients.

  1. Fruits: Fruits contain vitamins, minerals, fibers and antioxidants should be the part of the diet plan.
  2. Rice gruel: Rice gruel helps in the formation of watery gastric juice and reduces the acidity level within the stomach. Only rice that has been aged for one year must be used. Wheat and barley are beneficial.
  3. Vegetables: Garlic and onion limit the growth of bacteria. Carrot juice, spinach juice, pumpkin, bitter gourd (kaakarakaya), cucumber (dosakaya), and green banana are effective. Broccoli is effective against h. Pylori bacteria in the stomach lining.
  4. Dairy products: Calcium and vitamin d in milk reduce the stomach acids and gives relief to the stomach but, it should be with low content fat.
  5. Grains: Whole wheat chapattis, pasta, noodles made from whole grains should be included in the diet. Refined flour (maida) products should be strictly avoided. Limit the consumption of whole grain chapattis to about 2 chapattis, per day.
  6. Green coconut water: Drink green coconut water, as it provides the stomach with the necessary rest, vitamins, and minerals which provide an excellent and easy remedy for gastritis.

Foods to be avoided:
Several foods produce a large amount of acid in your stomach leading to gastritis. You should avoid intake of such foodstuffs in your diet:

  1. Salty and spicy foods
  2. Vinegar and vinegar based food items.
  3. Aerated drinks, citrus juices, caffeine.
  4. High fat/cholesterol contained food items.
  5. Beef, fried fish, and pork.
  6. Baked products like cookies, cakes, chocolates.

Medical treatments

Medical therapies/ options:
Several allopathic medicines are used for the treatment of gastritis, but their prolonged use can lead to problems like weak bones, constipation, vomiting. Antibiotics are used to kill h. Pylori bacteria, which causes ulcers and gastritis in your digestive tract. Antacids normalize acid production by blocking the action of the parts of cells that produce acids. Ulcer healing agents protect the tissues that line your stomach and small intestine. Besides these, surgery is preferred in complicated cases of gastritis like pus or mucous filled infections in stomach and intestines.

Ayurvedic and herbal therapies:
In Ayurveda, gastritis is known as urdhavaga amalapitta. It is caused in people who have pitta dosha, which means disturbance in the digestion of food leading to indigestion. When the pitta dosha gets increased in such people, there are greater chances of getting gastritis. Ayurvedic preparations like dhaatriloha, sukumaraghrita, sootashekhara rasa, kaamadudha rasa, leela vilas rasa, chandrakala rasa, amalakichoorna, triphalachoornaand amalapittantaka rasa are beneficial in gastritis. If there is constipation along with gastritis, then avipattikarachoorna is taken as the medicine of choice.

Few herbs that are beneficial for gastritis patients are

  1. Cardamom (ilaayachee): soothes the stomach. It is especially beneficial if the gastritis causes heartburn.

Cold & Cough - Ayurvedic & Natural Remedies That Can Help Treat It!

No matter how well you take care of yourself, everyone catches a cold or flu at some time or the other. That’s probably the reason why it is popularly known as a ‘common’ cold. A cold on its own does not harm the body much but it leaves you feeling weakened and suppresses the immune system. Cold is a viral infection and hence is usually unresponsive to antibiotics and other medication. However, Ayurveda can help manage a cold better and speed up the recovery process.

Cough and cold can be triggered by a number of factors including a sudden drop in temperature, exposure to dust or pollen or staying in rooms with poor ventilation. Additionally, aggravating the Kapha dosha can also cause a cold or cough. When the food we eat is not digested properly, its turns into ‘ama’ that triggers cold or cough when it reaches the respiratory system. Some common ayurvedic remedies for coughs and colds are:

  1. Enhance your body heat: Keeping the body warm, especially the head, throat, chest and feet, is the first step to recovering from a cold. Drinking a cup of hot spiced tea or a glass of warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, a few times a day, can also help. Spices like cumin, coriander and black pepper are considered heat generating spices and hence should be used liberally when preparing food.
  2. Vapour therapy: To recover from a cough that is accompanied by congestion, try inhaling the hot vapours of water mixed with a little eucalyptus oil. This helps dilate the bronchial tubes and unblocks the nostrils. Inhaling the vapours of water mixed with rock salt can help relieve heaviness in the head and a mild cold. Simple hot water vapours itself can even be inhaled to relieve sinusitis pain. To benefit from vapour therapy, it is essential to sit in a room without the fan on and to cover your head and the vapour source while inhaling the steam.
  3. Dhooma Paan: Inhaling turmeric smoke is said to have an antiseptic effect on the lungs and respiratory tract. To benefit from this therapy burn a dried root of turmeric and inhale the smoke a few times. If you do not have access to the dried root of turmeric, place a red hot piece of charcoal with a few dried leaves in a clay pot, add a heaped spoon of turmeric powder to this and blow gently till it catches fire before inhaling the smoke.
