Hello friends. I am Dr Rahul Chandok. I am a senior consultant psychiatrist with the Fortis group of hospitals. And I am having my own practice at my clinic, My home clinic in Faridabad.

Coming to today’s topic which is understanding OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. OCD, also known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is affecting about 2% of the population at some point of time in their life which makes it 1 in 40 persons is going to have it. It is 2 to 3 times more common than other chronic psychiatric disorder like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. So every person has a brain and I believe the brain thinks. When it comes to OCD we have to understand that the thinking becomes affected. When the thinking is normal, it is under the person’s control and is as per his or her will. But when the brain gets under stress there is a neurochemical called serotonin which becomes less. And because of that the thinking becomes automatic. Thoughts come on their own, that are uncontrollable, unwilling, they are excessive. Person gets them repetitively. And they are negative. The person also understands they are baseless. But because of the fear which arises out of that, the person becomes excessively anxious. And to reduce this anxiety of fear the person does certain acts which suppose the person gets a doubt then the person does checking, suppose the person has a thought that might be the hands are dirty or the person is not clean enough. Or the germs will affect him or her. The person repetitively does washing. If the person is not able to do any activity to reduce anxiety, then the person starts avoiding things. And if the person is not able to do any of these the person gets angry. If all these persists for a period of time, then the person might go into depression.

The message which I would like to extend is that OCD is definitely treatable. You have to understand how and what is happening. We have to correct the level of serotonin which is possible through the use of medication which are definitely in today’s times are much better what we had earlier.

Side effects are very less and the results are pretty quick. And yes we definitely use therapy work to make the person understand or to fight OCD or what to do with the thoughts. The trick is that we have to learn to ignore these thoughts because at some of their lives every person gets negative thoughts but they are able to ignore them But a person with OCD is stuck so OCD is definitely treatable take help of the doctor or psychiatrist. Don’t be afraid of the medication and learn how to tackle it.

Understanding All About Depression!

Depression is a serious medical illness that is characterized by prolonged periods of sadness and feeling blue for weeks or months together. This feeling is often associated with withdrawal from activities, lack of energy and low self-esteem. These feelings persist and interfere with daily life so much that it becomes highly difficult to carry out their tasks.

Causes of Depression
There is no single cause for depression and it may get triggered by various factors which include:

  1. Biological factors – Some types of depression run in families suggesting a hereditary risk
  2. Abuse - A past traumatic event of physical, mental or sexual abuse can increase the vulnerability to clinical depression at a later point of time in life
  3. Medications – Certain medications tend to induce symptoms of depression
  4. Conflict – As a result of personal conflicts or disputes with friends or family, depression may develop
  5. Death or Loss – Grief over the death of a loved one increases the risk of depression
  6. Substance Abuse – Almost 30% of people with substance abuse have major or clinical depression
  7. Environmental Factors – Social isolation or a normal response to stressful events can lead to depression

Symptoms of Depression
Clinical depression is characterized by the onset of the following symptoms:

  1. It is natural to feel down at times, but if this mood lingers on day after day for a long time it is a main sign of depression
  2. Physical symptoms – fatigue, insomnia, excessive sleep, persistent body aches like headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease with proper treatment
  3. Changes in Appetite and weight
  4. Difficulty in concentrating and making effective decisions
  5. Withdrawal from daily activities that were previously enjoyed
  6. Talking about death or suicide
  7. Agitation and restlessness
  8. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt due to past failings

Treatments for Depression
Some of the major treatments for clinical depression are outlined below:

  1. Psychotherapy - From behavioral therapy to interpersonal therapy there are several talk therapies that can be undertaken to minimize the severity of depressive symptoms and manage depression. These therapies are an active collaboration between the therapists and their patients that seek to reinforce a positive environment to help faster recovery.
  2. Hospitalization – Required for serious cases of depression where the patient may have attempted suicide and accordingly therapy is given
  3. Medications – Antidepressants are prescribed by physicians to help improve overall mood
  4. Electroconvulsive Therapy – For severe and chronic depression symptoms, the last resort of therapy involves shock treatments with safe practice
  5. Self-Help Methods – One can also seek depression oriented support groups that allow the individual to socialize and be with others who are facing the same problem. There are several online support groups as well with virtual assistance at stressful times.

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It is a disease where obsessions lead to repetitive behavior or compulsions. In this mental disease, people think that they need to keep on checking things on a repeat mode due to very strange fears and obsessions. People affected by this disease cannot control either their thoughts or their activities for more than a short span of time. The common things that people affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder do repeatedly are washing their hands, checking the time, checking if the door is locked properly, counting of things. It is a type of anxiety disorder which negatively affects the day to day life of the patient. Let us discuss the symptoms, causes, and diagnosis of OCD to know about the disease clearly.

The Symptoms of OCD –
People affected by this disease might experience anxiety at a greater level that leads to compulsive behaviors, hyperactivity and impulsivity is a common symptom in the patients. If a person experiences some event that seemed unlikely to them, the activities of the event might be triggered in their brain which can also cause the person to be affected by the disorder.

The Diagnosis of OCD –
A physical examination may be done to rule out the chances of other related diseases. Then, lab tests are carried out for further details that are required. But a person affected by OCD requires talking to other people and socialization. It is always advisable to consult a doctor and treat the patient with his medical knowledge for better treatment. Do not take the help of any medications without consulting a doctor.

OCD can occur in both males and females and at any age. The treatment of OCD may or may not be successful. It depends on the condition of the patient entirely. How Does Internet Addiction Affects Your Brain?

Internet addiction disorder or IAD, more commonly called Problematic Internet use or PIU, refers to excessive internet use that interferes with your daily life. Too much internet use to chat with friends, watch porn, use social media or surf the net for information- all fall under the purview of internet addiction.

Internet addiction disorder is a recently recognised condition in which sufferers spend unhealthy amounts of time “online” to the extent that it impairs their life quality. The internet addicts may experience distress and withdrawal symptoms just like smokers do, if they are denied access to their computers or mobile phones. They suffer withdrawal symptoms like tremours, obsessive thoughts, and involuntary movements of the fingers like typing.

IAD and Your Health
Internet addiction can have two different types of repercussions- physical and mental. Physical problems associated with this disorder are-

  1. Back pain
  2. Carpel tunnel syndrome
  3. Neck pain due to cervical spondylitis
  4. Sciatica pain

Mental Problems

The psychological and organic harm to the brain caused by internet addiction is still being probed but there is enough research to say conclusively that internet addiction disrupts nerve wiring in the brains of addicts. This addiction thus causes a level of brain damage normally seen in heavy substance abusers. The brains of people who use cocaine and cannabis or other narcotics also show similar effects. The brain thus gets damaged when you get hooked to a behaviour- be it obsessive internet use or drugs. IAD is as physically damaging to your brain like an addiction to drugs, scientists believe.

In particular, brain scans have shown that internet addiction causes significant damage to white matter in the brain. This disruption to white matter nerve fibres connecting vital parts of the brain involved in emotions, decision making, and self-control has long-lasting debilitating results. IAD also shrinks the brain’s gray and white matter fibers which result in changes in your brain functioning and the way you handle emotions.
This disruption in white matter fibers is caused by disrupted myelin, the fatty insulating sheath that coats nerve fibres and helps them to function.

The risk factors for IAD
Specific risk factors for IAD include:

  1. Anxiety, depression or other mental health or mood disorders
  2. Loneliness
  3. Absence of social interaction or support
  4. Presence of other addictions like gambling, alcohol, drugs, or sex
  5. An abrupt change that limits social activity or mobility like having a baby, becoming disabled, losing a job etc.
  6. High levels of stress.

IAD is treatable. All you have to do is seek help. Sometimes, trying to get rid of IAD by yourself doesn’t work. This is the right time to seek the help of a counselor. Behavioural therapies that chip at the root of the problem or the main cause of IAD help you in getting rid of it fast.

Internet addiction is a very recent phenomenon, but is already a cause for concern. With the advent of various social networking websites, people are increasingly becoming addicted to the internet. Internet addiction disorder is often characterized by people inching to form an emotional attachment with people and activities, all of them online. You may enjoy connecting to people more over the virtual interface instead of the real world; this usually stems from an inability to establish real human contact.

The symptoms of internet addiction disorder are:
1. Excessive usage of the internet
2. Depression, mood swings and irritability if one doesn’t get access to the internet
3. Any effort to reduce internet usage is usually unsuccessful
4. You may experience constant problems in personal relationships, education and your job due to incessant internet usage
5. A tendency of lying to close ones when they ask you how much time you spend over the internet
6. Using internet to escape from real world problems

Further complications
Internet addiction can gradually isolate you. You may develop an aversion to meeting and communicating with people in real life. This can impair your social skills and make you socially awkward. This disorder also create problems in relationships as it can reduce the time you spend interacting personally.

Internet addiction may also lead you to create online personas to evade low self-esteem issues. This actually aggravates the problem instead of solving it; can result in severe anxiety and depression. Withdrawal symptoms might result in anxiety, depression, irritation and loneliness. This disorder can lead to complications such as dry eyes, headaches, change in sleep patterns and subsequent problems in falling asleep. Back pain from sitting upright while you are on the internet is also very common problem.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder that causes anxiety. It is also called anxiety disorder. The main characteristics of this disorder are uncontrollable, unpleasant thoughts, which are continuing. OCD causes the mind to get stuck on a specific thought or inclination. For instance, you may repeat a task forty times to ensure that it has been done properly. You will not be able to get it out of your mind. OCD is characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive behavior pattern.

Some obsessive thoughts include:

  1. The fear of being defiled by germs or soil and also of contaminating others.
  2. The fear of losing control and hurting yourself or others.
  3. Having sexual or brutal thoughts on the mind.
  4. Extreme focus and devotion to religion and religious activities.
  5. A sense of fear of losing or not having things you need.
  6. Having the assumption that everything would go fine.
  7. The person will become very superstitious.

Some compulsive behavior patterns include:

  1. Inordinate double checking on things like locks, apparatuses and switches.

  3. Counting in the head, mumbling nonsense words without meaning.
  4. Devoting a lot of time for washing and cleaning.
  5. Praying without reason and taking part in religious ceremonies.
  6. Accumulating junk material.

Here are some common ways to deal with OCD:

  1. Regular Exercise: Exercise is the best natural remedy to prevent anxiety, which leads to OCD. Exercise checks your OCD  symptoms. It makes your nerves stronger, and hence you can focus your mind out of obsessive thoughts by yourself, when they arrive. Get at least thirty minutes of exercise regularly.
  2. Connect With Friends And Family: Social isolation is one of the common early symptoms of OCD. Social isolation can lead to OCD as well. Therefore, you must always stay connected to your friends and family so that you never get lonely and anti-social. Share everything with family.
  3. Sleep Sufficiently: Lack of sleep or troubled sleep may lead to anxiety disorders. You need to sleep enough to be away from obsessive thoughts.
  4. Perform Relaxation Techniques: Simple practices like yoga, meditation, pranayama  help you grow spiritually, relax your mind and keeps OCD away from you.
  5. Tackle Your Fears: Instead of avoiding fearful thoughts, let them flow and tackle them face to face. This will help you overcome the fear. Adopt measures so that you can focus on other things and ignore the obsessive thoughts. Distract yourself away from the obsession.

Depression in adults is a lot different from depression in younger people.   3. Providing a person with space is mandatory- Adults hate being domineered or patronized. When they need space they should be allowed to be alone. It could help them deal with depression better. Staying alone doesn't always involve loneliness. People might need to clarify things to their own selves or might even need time to introspect.
  4. Make a depressed person take care of a pet- The presence of a pet in the household can relieve its members of accumulating stress. An adult when made to take care of a pet has added responsibilities and will naturally have less scope to wallow in their own sorrow. A pet gives a person the love and affection he or she had been lacking all along.
  5. Humor is a wonderful pill- Create opportunities to make a person laugh. Share jokes or make them watch funny shows.

Being away or oblivious to social media is synonymous to not following the herd. Social media probably is no more the latest fad; it is the given code to take a deeper look into the present age. The rewarding fact about social networking sites is their ability to transport us to people and places millions of miles away from us. This epoch with its dictates of overproduction and maximum utilization of labor, snatches away the boon of communication.

Some of the mental health problems that you may suffer from due to a social media addiction are discussed below:

  1. Peer Pressure- Social media use also creates the fear of missing out because you want to do what everyone else is doing. This evokes anxiety and will give rise to negative feelings and emotions, which again create mental health problems and stress and anxiety disorders
  2. Fatigue and Stress- When you are using social media, you are constantly switching from one task to another because there is just so much to do and see. This information abundance can tire out your brain, especially when it is received chaotically. Your brain needs time and room for absorbing the data and processing the information, but multitasking on social media makes your brain work overtime. This can prevent it from relaxing and it will become exhausted as it tries to deal with the barrage of information. Hence, the fatigue puts your mind under a lot of stress and you may not be able to concentrate on anything at all.
  3. Social Anxiety- Even though the whole point of social media is to allow people to stay connected with others, it doesn’t have the same satisfaction and element associated with actual human interaction, which is a crucial human need. In fact, in some ways, it is too distant and this is not a good thing for those who become dependent on social media as it can lead to social anxiety. Those who are already suffering from this problem will find it even more difficult to indulge in face-to-face interaction. Real human interaction can become extremely scary for people as it is becoming common to hide behind your computer screens and not go out at all.
  4. Distraction- Social media is just tailor-made for decreasing our productivity because you spend hours looking at everyone else’s life when you could be doing something else. This means that most of your time is spent on viewing photos, liking posts, and writing comments and these activities don’t really require the use of your intellectual abilities. They aren’t intellectual at all and distract you from activities that are such as reading, studying informational articles on the internet, etc. Your brain doesn’t get enough food for development and your intellectual abilities can decline in this way. Your brain will slow down and not be able to respond quickly in various situations.
  5. Insecurity- One of the major problems with social media is that posts typically present an idealized version of what’s going on in everyone’s life. Usually, what you see isn’t actually reality because everyone has their problems and issues. Nevertheless, you end up comparing your own life with that of others and think less of your own. If people in your newsfeed seem to be having a good time, it will make you envious and affect your mood negatively. Research has shown that widespread use of social media can demotivate people, make them aggressive and cause a decline in confidence.

  1. Low self-esteem.
  2. Feeling low when you see other people's images and lifestyle.
