Dear lybrate-user, Depression is a chemical disorder just like many medical illnesses. There are many types of depression. Each one of them need different duration of treatment, some of them life long medication like diabetes or BP. Just because you are fine, you can not stop. Will you stop your diabetes medicine and diet as soon as your blood sugar becomes normal? Like that you should continue the drug as long as the doctors prescribes. May be you need the drug for some more time or you need more dose of the drug, or you need to add another antidepressant or therapy. Why do you want to stop a medicine which benefits you to live a better quality of life? Both depression and anxiety are disorders that need treatment. A psychiatrist will be able to treat them after diagnosing the disorder. Suppose, you have temperature of 102* instead of 98.6*, don't you go to a doctor? Like that if depression and anxiety are much higher than what is normal, you should consult the doctor, psychiatrist. As you know, so many disorders can raise your temperature, like that so many disorders may increase your depression and anxiety. The psychiatrist will find out the cause - it may be a hormonal problem, it may be a neurological problem, it may be a bipolar disorder, or it may be a drug side effect. After diagnosing, the psychiatrist will treat accordingly - both depression & anxiety and underlying cause. Please inform all your other family members and friends about it. Just like talking about fever, let us talk about our feelings also. You need to consult a psychiatrist who will request few blood tests to find out other medical diseases causing depression. If they are NORMAL, she/ he may prescribe you a tablet of antidepressant for few months. The dose will be changed according to your improvement and side effects of the tablets. It might take 3-6 weeks for you to improve and be active and happy. You need to take those tablets for many months. Please note that there are many antidepressants that do NOT increase sleep.
