Hello lybrate-user. Ultrasound scan is not a very good modality for appendicitis. CT scan is the gold standard. I do not rely completely on scans or lab reports and I believe in my clinical judgement. Symptoms of appendicitis are pain in right lower abdomen which is usually continuous and often severe with vomiting, nausea and fever. Pt also loses appetite due to infection. Since you were taking antibiotics for 5 DAYS the infection could have been subsided. As per your complains it does not look like appendicitis. Its better if you be in touch with your treating doctor and continue medicines as per his/her advice. Thanks.

Detox Your Body

Detox Your Body Now.

Now as we celebrated Diwali yesterday, many of us had sweets and gracious sweets.

Honestly, it would be unfair to resist this indulgence, especially during this festive season.

Lemons – The acidic content in lemons will help you get rid of a heavy stomach feeling and bloating. Lemon also helps in smooth movement of food in our gastrointestinal tract. You can have lemon with lukewarm water on an empty stomach every morning.

Honey – Along with lemon and water, addition of honey helps in relieving constipation. This water will help in digestion and get rid of toxins in the body.

Spinach – Your body needs fiber. Festival binging often brings with it foods rich in fats and low in fiber. Because of this we often end up constipated. Spinach will help build up bulk in the body and clean the gastrointestinal tract.

Tomatoes – Yes, tomatoes are an underrated super food. Since during festive time we indulge in too many fried snacks, we end up consuming trans fats which are cancerous in nature. Eating tomatoes will help cut this cancerous effect in our body.

Cucumber – Cucumbers help produce more urine in the body which consequently means it secretes toxins out of the body.

Also, cucumber is a diuretic food which means it helps in excess losing water from our body.

Beetroot – Beetroot is known to cleanse our liver. Therefore, after a heavy alcohol night, blanch beetroots and have them.

Beetroots contain betalains which help neutralize toxins and flush them from our body through urine

Onions – Surprising as it may be, onions help cut toxins from other foods. This due to the antioxidants present in onions.

If you are a diabetic and indulged in heavily fried foods during Diwali, onions will help regulate blood sugar level.

Festive Skin Care - Let Your Skin Do The Talking This Festive Season!

Festive season is a time of fun, beauty and indulgence. There is always an excitement when Diwali is around the corner. It is all about fun, mingling with your family and friends, and eating sweets and snacks. But during this mood of elation and celebration, one forgets that what goes inside also shows up externally. There are the endless parties for which you would dress up and style. So there will be the blow drying, ironing, styling, make-up, late nights, and to top it all, the alcohol and cigarettes. This, coupled with the excess smoke and pollution affects the skin and hair to a large extent.

Here are few tips on how can you keep your skin glowing and hair healthy during the festive season. To start with, let me explain what damages your skin and hair and how.

  1. SugarSugar suppresses the activity of our white blood cells and thus makes us more susceptible to infections. It also worsens allergies and causes damage because of the breaking down of good proteins, leading to the formation of Advanced Glycation End-products (AGE). AGE makes the proteins in the collagen and hair stiff and hard; thus speeding up the process of skin ageing and making the hair brittle. One of the main reasons for wrinkles, deep lines, and sagging skin is AGE. So gorging high sugar foods during festivals can lead to fine lines and excessive dryness. So please be mindful of what you are eating during this time.
  2. Smoke – Smoke and pollution damage hair and skin. It makes the skin dry and scalp irritated or even itchy. Too much exposure can lead to boils/ folliculitis, skin rash, and acne exacerbation. To prevent this, you should wash your hair and body thoroughly the day after the festival to counteract the damage caused by smoke and ash.
  3. Excessive make-up and styling – You need to dress up and look pretty on festival days. This means excessive make-up and hair styling products, blow drying, and ironing. Not all this is harmful, but what worsens the situation is when you ignore or forget to remove them all off after the party is over. Always remember to follow your night-time skincare regime and cleanse your hair of all the styling products.
  4. Alcohol and cigarettes – These worsen the condition of your hair and skin. Alcohol makes the skin flushed and dehydrated with broken capillaries. And cigarettes compromise the blood supply to your skin. So cut down on cigarettes and alcohol as much as possible.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Be on a healthy diet always, especially a month before the festivals start.
  • Avoid too many sweets.
  • Drink plenty of fluids like water, coconut water, and buttermilk.
  • Try to cut down on your alcohol intake and cigarettes.
  • Apply an anti-oxidant cream which contains vitamin A, C, E or Q10 during the day, underneath your sunscreen.
  • Remove every trace of make-up and apply a good nourishing night cream.
  • Start oiling your hair with light oils like the ones which are coconut-based.
  • Do not use mousse on hair. If you do, then wash it off at night or the next morning.
  • Blow drying with low heat is better than ironing. Ironing can lead to hair breakage.
  • Avoid harsh surface chemical treatments during the Diwali month – be it for skin or hair.
  • Include some cardio exercises in your daily routine.

So, follow these simple steps to look gorgeous and feel gorgeous during this festive season!

Diwali Special - Things You Must Do To Prevent Yourself From Pollution!

Diwali Special - Things You Must Do To Prevent Yourself From Pollution!

With Diwali, the festival of lights, the festive spirit associated with the joyous occasion can be felt in the air. Do you know what else can be felt in the air as well? Pollution! There is a startling increase in the pollution level due to the burning of firecrackers. Apart from the new clothes, sweets and being with our loved ones, the crackers are an inseparable part of Diwali. So know how you can stay safe while having the best time of your life?

Suspended particulate matter

Innumerable tiny particles called the suspended particulate matter are found in the air that we breathe. The amount of SPM found in the air determines the level of air pollution. While the safe level of particulate matter is 100 per cubic meter, many Indian cities report a level of around 1600 which is 14 times higher than what is considered safe.

The suspended particulate matter can cause severe respiratory diseases since they can stick to the sides of the airway and travel deep into the lungs. The particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter called the PM 2.5 can get deep into that portion of the lungs where gas exchange between inhaled air and the bloodstream occurs. These particles are quite dangerous because they travel to the alveolar portion of the lungs which does not have an efficient means to remove the particles from the passage. Moreover, if the particles are water soluble, then they will eventually pass into the bloodstream.

Decrease in lung function

PM 2.5 can cause aggravation of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases while also causing premature death. The pollution level rises to a great extent during Diwali when firecrackers are burnt, and this gives the PM 2.5 level a big shoot up. People generally develop chronic bronchitis and decreased lung function among other respiratory problems.

The gaseous particles released as a result of burning firecrackers tend to stay suspended in the air. The smaller particles stay suspended for days or weeks and travel farther while the bigger particles known as PM 10 stay suspended in the air for minutes or hours. While PM 2.5 particles travel for hundreds of miles, the PM 10 particles usually travel within a range of 100 yards to 30 miles.

Blockage in the lungs

While inhaling, the particles present in the air enter through our respiratory tract into our lungs. While PM 2.5 is small and passes into our bloodstreams, the larger PM 10 particles get stuck at the sides and the narrow passages of the lungs. Also, some people have the habit of breathing through their mouth. This allows much more particles to enter easily into the deepest portions of your lungs.

Know how you can cope with it

While you enjoy the festive spirit, it is also important to avoid any long-term health issues. So, apart from the time you are into lighting crackers, follow these simple steps to be safe while having fun.

  • When you are on the road travel while wearing a face mask, preferably N95 respirator and roll up your car’s windows.
  • You can also check the air quality index in your neighborhood before stepping out to be sure.
  • It is advised not to exercise outdoors for a few days since the SPM will be high during and after Diwali.
  • Do not let children play outdoors for long hours.
  • Taking garlic and vitamin C rich foods will improve your immune system which can help cope with the situation.
  • If you have any chronic pulmonary diseases such as asthma, additional care needs to be exercised so that the condition does not worsen.

So, this 2017, have a happy and lung-friendly Diwali! Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Navratri: After the 9-Days Fasting, Here's the Diet You Should Follow For Next Few Days!

Navratri: After the 9-Days Fasting, Here's the Diet You Should Follow For Next Few Days!

The nine days of Navaratri comprises of nine days of explicit celebration be it regarding meeting friends, hanging out with family, eating food, or going for pandal hopping. During these nine days, the enjoyment quotient is at its peak, so a lot of dietary imbalances are seen as an individual is either fasting or groping on high-calorie food or going on whole night trips. Overall, it is a total phase of biological discrepancy that is pretty welcoming as everybody loves going beyond time conventions once in a while.

The importance of following a diet post celebrations-

Our body does take a toll in these nine days. Moreover, after the 9-Days fasting in the Navratri and after all the pomp and show has ended, a person feels a lack of energy. So, after these nine days, one should follow an energy boosting diet that will replenish the tired soul and body. Non-vegetarians may become protein-deficit during these fasting days, hence during the post-Navaratri diet, one should also back up his or her non-vegetarian protein content as majority follow fast rituals or prefer eating vegetarian foods during these days.

  1. Food with soy content: Soya beans contain phosphorus, vitamin B, and copper - all three are beneficial for boosting energy. Phosphorus and copper convert food to energy and vitamin B breaks down carbohydrates for energy. Soya curries can be accommodated in meals.
  2. Eggs: Having eggs for few days is important. The yolk of the egg is a high source of vitamin D and B and is rich in protein as well. Vitamin B fragments down food to promote energy and vitamin D makes bones stronger.
  3. Lean meat: Meat eaters will love this one. Whether you love chicken, pork, beef or turkey, you're assured of sustained energy. It also contains norepinephrine and dopamine that apart from boosting energy uplifts mood as well.
  4. Beetroot juice: Drinking a glass of beetroot juice before a workout will make your body work for long hours without making you fatigued. Beetroot is abundant in vitamin A and C both of which helps in reducing fatigue and building stamina which is needed in these phase as all the holidays are over.
  5. Have some chocolates: Yes, you read it right. Have some chocolates without any guilt. The entire fasting period and the celebrations getting over apart from taking a toll on the health issues also do affect our mood. Chocolate act as a great mood elevator apart from rendering us with the boost of energy.
  6. Water: A diet can never be complete without a proper amount of water intake. During Navaratri people neglect on their daily 7 to 8 glasses of water so during these days it is important to fill it up.

Stuff yourself with these goodies and gear up to face the post-festive work days. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.
