How to keep your mouth clean and maintain good oral health?

Hello friends I am doctor Sahil Singh. I am a general dentist practicing in DLF Phase 4, Super Mart 1 Gurgaon. Today I will tell you how to keep your mouth clean or how to keep a good oral health. Well everything starts with a healthy lifestyle.
1. We can start with a healthy diet. A diet should contain each and every part which is necessary, be it carbohydrate, be it fat, be it protein and yes most important part is roughage or the fiber. Roughage includes your salads your fruits, roughage helps you clean your teeth and your intestine both. So it has a dual effect, your teeth will be clean your intestine will be clean and overall health will improve.


2. Cleaning of your teeth. Cleaning your teeth refers to brushing, rinsing, using a mouthwash, flossing. We will start with brushing; brushing maximum two times a day which you can do. But the whole day you are eating, drinking something, snacking or whatever. At that time what you can do? At that time it is very important to clean your mouth by rinsing vigorously. You can also use a clean finger to rub against your teeth and the gums, which will massage the gums also, improve the blood circulation of the gums and yes it will remove the plaque or the food debris also. Secondly use of mouthwash, mouthwash should be used after breakfast or after your first meal. It should not be used after just brushing.

Brushing has already cleaned your teeth, so why mouthwash again? But yes the function of mouthwash starts after your first meal or after your breakfast. After having your breakfast you clean your mouth with clean water vigorously then use a mouthwash. Swish it around in the mouth for a minute then spit it out. After spitting the mouthwash do not rinse with water again, or do not eat anything for at least half an hour to 45 minutes.


3. Flossing. Flossing seems to be a difficult part and there are so many myths about it that it hurts your gums or it can damage your gums, but if it is done properly or a dentist can tell you how to do it, it is of great help. Because brushing cannot easily or completely remove whatever is stuck between the teeth and with age the use of flossing is very much necessary. Flossing helps you clean the interdental or the space between the two teeth, the food debris which is stuck between the two teeth can be easily removed with the help of flossing. So it keeps your mouth healthy, improves your gums health. Secondly nowadays apart from the thread or the nylon floss we have water flosses. Water flosses are for those people who don’t want to put more stress with their hands so they can use a water floss, it has a very strong jet of water which comes through a flosser and it will clean your mouth properly.


4. Professional Cleaner. This is something a dentist can only do. You should visit your dentist so that even if there is a problem we can detect it early or even if cleaning is required, at times because of the crowding or maligning teeth there are deposits which are initially food deposits then it becomes calculus which is hard deposit and only a dentist can clean . So cleaning is a very important aspect for maintaining a good oral hygiene. If not cleaning and if there is food debris in mouth it will start with so many diseases. Firstly the gum disease, you can have weak gums, you can have bleeding gums. Secondly you can have cavities; Thirdly you can have a bad odour or a bad breath which we call as halitosis.

Nowadays the walking schedules, the working conditions lack of time, lack of exercise. So it all give rise to, it's very common problems whatever common word which you must have heard that is stress. And stress can give rise to n number of problems what diseases and yes stress is a Lifestyle problem also.

A dentist can easily tell a person that how stress is affecting his dietary schedules or his dietary habits, his overall health, his General Health condition of the teeth, condition of the gums, anything. For example, if a person is in stress so he will start clenching his teeth we will start grinding his teeth or he will start biting the nails or he will smoke a lot or he will drink a lot or he will not take care of his gums et cetera et cetera. Maybe he will like depend on of junk food a lot. So all these things yes it will deteriorates your oral health plus it will deteriorates your general health also. Because of all these habits any person can develop any kind of disease in the body be it mental be it physical be it any disease. So your oral health is the reflection of the general health.

Nowadays people are just mad about few things that is smoking that is alcohol it seems to be a Lifestyle it seems to be a status symbol but they just forget how these things will affect their normal life their General Health and as a dentist it is easy very much easy for a dentist to understand what a person is going through. If he will clench or grind his teeth yes we can see attrition in his teeth. Nothing is more like to drink acidic drink is like cold drinks or acidic food so we will see erosion in his teeth. Is he an distress or depression he is not taking care of his teeth virgin till cleanliness so we will see plaque calculus or whatever anything or any deposits in the teeth so General Health and oral health are directly related to each other.

Supposedly diabetes let's talk about diabetes. Diabetes its everybody know diabetes is a disease which kind of deteriorates the whole system of the body, whole metabolism of the body. Diabetes yes it affects major part of the mouth that is gums. Gums are declared gums are degenerated where will teeth stay?

A dentist is very much is much able to understand to make out that your sugar level is high and according to the studies it is very much related to the sugar of the body. If The mouth is clean and the gums are clean if there is like no word of any plaque or calculus the sugar level of body also goes down. Thirdly if you have a lot of deposits if you diabetic so there are a lot world chances of developing endocarditis that is a problem of the heart. drink plenty of water and have lot of fluids. when body dehydrates the mouth and throat becomes dry which leads to increased bacterial activity which further leads to bad breath. exessive consumption of tea and coffee or aerated drinks also leads to same problem

Dental Abscess - Causes And Symptoms

Dental abscess is characterized by pus formation in the teeth or the gums. This infection may occur either in the gums or the tip of the tooth. It usually occurs due to a bacterial infection which may enter the mouth through food, thus causing accumulation of plaque. If the plaque is not removed by following proper dental hygiene, then it may result in abscess.

The various factors that increase your chances of getting affected by dental abscess are a sugar rich diet and poor oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth to prevent symptoms of dental abscess. A diet that has too much sugar may lead to cavities that increases your risk of dental abscess.

Dental abscess may be classified into three types

  1. Periodontal abscess: This type of abscess occurs in the bone structures in the teeth

  2. Gingival abscess: This type of abscess occurs in the gums

  3. Periapical abscess: Periapical abscess occurs in the soft areas of the tooth

Causes:
Entry of bacteria through holes in the teeth may result in breaking down of the soft tissue under the enamel. The infection may result in the hole to penetrate the pulp in the teeth. The bacteria thus infects the bone present in the teeth causing Periapical abscess. The bacteria that infects as a result of plaque accumulation may lead dental abscess. This may also lead to formation of gaps in the teeth leading to infection in the inner areas of the teeth.

Symptoms
The symptoms of dental abscess are: 

  1. The teeth may become sensitive to hot and cold temperatures

  2. Pain during chewing food

  3. A persistent pain in the jaw that radiates to the ear

  4. You may experience a swelling in the face and the neck

  5. Tenderness in the lymph nodes in the neck

  6. You may experience symptoms of fever

  7. Presence of foul smelling fluid in your mouth

Sir I am 60 years old. .some times I will get bad smell through my body, through mouth, through my arm pits. After some days it will go off automatically. .sir I am diabetic patient, but in control. Yes brushing with any good paste removes plaque (food debris) but not calculus. Salt helps in case of swelling due to inflammation or infections.

Mouthwash has become an essential ingredient of one's oral hygiene kit. Though not a substitute for flossing or brushing, it offers additional oral protection. Due to a host of ingredients, such as alcohol,
Chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride, menthol, methyl salicylate, fluoride, antibacterial enzymes, hydrogen peroxide, essential oils, zinc chloride and other herbs and "natural" ingredients mouthwash has a number of benefits.

Alcohol is the basic ingredient in all of them. While fluoride protects against decay, chlorhexidine protects against gum diseases. Hydrogen peroxide produces a mild bleaching effect. Herbs and essential oils produce a freshening effect.

Benefits of using a mouthwash

1. Reduces formation of tartar and plaque.
2. Protects from oral problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease, especially if it contains cetylpyridinium or essential oils. Chlorhexidine is also effective in protecting plaque formation and gingivitis.
3. Kills bacteria in the mouth and prevents cavities or decay, especially if it contains fluoride.
4. Mouthwash, to some extent, covers up bad breath due to oral hygiene or oral disease and produces a fresher breath.

The cosmetic one is usually for freshening up the breath and is not regulated by the FDA. The therapeutic ones contain active ingredients aimed at addressing one of the issues like plaque formation, bad breath, dry mouth, or decay. They kill bacteria, reduce plaque, fight gingivitis, and control decay. They are not a substitute for brushing or flossing but supplement these two very well. These are approved by FDA and are proven in terms of safety and efficacy. Rinses with zinc chloride are effective against bad breath, those with fluoride are useful in people who are cavity-prone, and chlorhexidine helps prevent gum disease.

Choosing a mouthwash: This depends on the oral health condition, and it is always advisable that the dentist prescribes the right rinse for you.

When and how to use mouthwash: When you are done with your brushing and flossing, rinse your mouth with a capful of the mouthwash liquid. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds and spit it out. Avoid brushing, drinking water, or rinsing your mouth after using a mouthwash for about 15 to 20 minutes. This will give sufficient time for the active ingredients in the mouthwash (especially if it is a therapeutic one) to act in the mouth. Brushing after mouthwash removes all the effect of the rinse.
