My age is 56, female. My tsh was normal but when I started taking lithium, my tsh rose by 108. I was recommended to take thyrox-100. Again, when I checked it after 6 months, tsh was 0.02. Should I stop taking thyrox tablet?

You need to reduce dose but considering lithium use complete stoppage may not be advisable. Again the dose of thyroid tablet depends upon multiple factors like age weight associated conditions concurrent medicine usage compliance to treatment anti thyroid antibody status final decision should be based on doctors consultation.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Treatment with Lithium is known to affect thyroid function leading to hypothyroidism. However, after cessation of lithium therapy thyroid function does return to normal. As the level of TSH has dropped to 0.02 mU/L , which is too low, can lead to hyperthyroidism, you will have to reduce the dosage by 50% to 50 mcg per day. Then check TSH again after 6 weeks, to see if the level is around 3 to 4 mU/L. Another aspect is that if lithium treatment has been completed or discontinued then thyroid function will return on its own. If you have any questions please do come back. Thanks.
