Lumbago: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

How is the treatment done?

If you are facing pain in the lower region of your back then this condition is commonly referred to as Lumbago. This pain causes a certain amount of discomfort while performing your day to day activities. This kind of back pain can be severe or sudden. If your back pain lasts for more than three months then it can be chronic nature. Most people suffer this kind of condition and this is most common to people who are aged. There are no exact causes of lumbago but the common causes are aging, injury, over work etc. If you have lumbago then you might experience pain in the backbone of yours and you cannot bend your back properly. Sometimes this back pain can cause you to have a stiff back and this spreads over to your head and develop headaches as well. Sometimes this pain might develop from a past injury for which you need to seek medical help to be on the safe side. Back pain is also associated with a common condition called spondylitis. If the back pain is left untreated then it can cause you to develop migraine problems as well. You can take necessary measures to prevent yourself from injuring the affected area again.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Since this condition is associated with pain and discomfort, in most cases for the course of treatment you are prescribed with painkillers and antacids. If the back pain comes back with over work or stress then you might be advised with physiotherapies that will help to relax the affected muscles and ease the pain. Certain acupunctures are also advised if you are facing chronic back pain. If the pain develops from a past injury then depending on the severity of the case sometimes surgery can be advised. Certain hot and cold stimulations are beneficial to ease the back pain that you are suffering from. Sometimes obesity can lead to back pain problems and thus your medical expert can suggest you to make some changes in your diet and also suggest a diet which is rich in Vitamin D. To determine the proper course of treatment an MRI scan of your spine may be conducted as well. Physiotherapy is a common and effective way to eliminate the problems of the lumbago condition. The physiotherapists will perform massages that will relax the muscles and apply stimulations that will help to ease the pain that you face along with certain exercises that you need to perform to keep your body in a perfect shape as obesity leads to many back pain problems.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If you are facing stiffness in your spine and also face pain while bending over then you are eligible for this course of treatment. You may also experience pain in the lower back area of your body while performing certain day to day activities. If the pain persists and causes you a lot of discomfort even while sleeping, standing or sitting then seeks medical attention as soon as possible.

Are there any side effects?

Certain back problems may arrive due to past injuries or accidents. If there is decay in the spinal chord then you are not eligible for this course of treatment.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

The painkillers that you are prescribed with might cause you to have some digestion and acidity problems. You should consume an antacid pill with the painkillers that you are prescribed with. Until the pain is fully eliminated you can experience a certain amount of stiffness in your back which causes discomfort.

How long does it take to recover?

You should restrict heavy day to day activities and obtain therapies to eliminate the pain in the affected area. You should also keep in touch with your medical expert to update the painkillers that you are prescribed with and consume them as advised by your medical expert.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Chronic back pain takes about six to twelve weeks to be fully cured if you follow the post treatment guidelines diligently. However the back pain might resurface due to over work or any form of unexpected injury.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The therapy sessions range around Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 15,000 depending on the services offered by your medical expert. The painkillers range from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1,500 depending on the severity of the condition. Other medical equipments which help to eliminate the pain range from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 2,500.

Umbago is often provoked by banal causes, i. E. A muscular or ligaments’ sprain, that may occur after a bad movement (as a fall), or after having lifted heavy weights or having done an exaggerated physical effort.
Obviously inadequate training, a wrong posture, overweight together with many other factors can help the happening of the problem.Other causes source from the spine itself: lumbago may descend from an arthritis of the spine (spondylosis) degenerative arthritis of the spinal vertebrae and related tissue; on the vertebral surface they may form the so called osteophytes (bony projections) that sometimes impinge on nerves causing pain.

Spine arthritis often shows up together with a problem of the intra vertebral discs that tend to become more thin. This causes the vertebrae to come closer with a consequent reduction of the space left for the nerve roots. The result is an irritation of the nerve structures that causes a lumbar sciatica. Another possible cause of compression of the nerve’s root is spinal disc herniation, main factor of sciatica.

Lumbar sciatica may also be caused by a narrowing (stenosis) of the vertebral canal inside which is contained the spinal marrow. Some persons are simply born with a more narrow canal than normal, while in some other cases stenosis can appear later, in example caused by an arthritis. There can also be an alteration of the spine, when a displacement of a vertebra in relation to the vertebrae below occurs (spondylolisthesis).

Almost everyone knows what is back pain. Lumbago is one of the most frequent problems: it is the second cause of medical visits after influenza and it has been estimated that 4 on 5 people suffer from it sooner or later in life. The spine is made by vertebras, separated by intra vertebral discs that act as shock absorbers, and its stability is assured by a group of ligaments and muscles.Inside the spine it is located the spinal marrow from which the nerves source and, coming out from spaces between a vertebra and another, they reach different parts of the body. The lumbar section of the spine, composed by 5 vertebras, is involved in almost every movement: it is fundamental to hold the back straight, to allow the torso rotation and its flexion. The back sustains most of the body weight and efforts and if its functions are compromised this can be strongly invalidating. The main symptom of lumbago is obviously pain that can locate in a specific area of the back.

The main symptom of lumbago is obviously pain that can locate in a specific area of the back.

It is often provoked by a muscle or ligaments sprain and it usually shows up together with a trauma, also called back strain.
Pain can be continuous and can sometimes ease by changing posture or practicing a light physical activity.
It is recommended not to practice heavy physical activity because it causes the symptoms to increase. When pain is provoked by a compression of one of the nerves' roots that come out from the lumbar spine, it tends to irradiate to the area reached by the entire nerve. So, if speaking of the lumbar spine, pain reaches the lower limb on the interested side of the body. In these cases the result is lumbar sciatica.
Ache may be felt after making an effort but also spontaneously and tends to be continuous and characterized by peaks of pain.

Improving the physical conditions and following some simple rules can help preventing back ache: it is important to do aerobic physical activity periodically (i. E. Swimming or walking). In fact, training helps to strengthen the back and its resistance. Moreover it is important to hold in check the body weight, losing weight if necessary and doing reinforcement and stretching exercises focused on the abdomen, buttocks and back muscles.

Here are some suggestions that can turn useful in daily life.

  • When standing: if forced to spend a long time standing it is important to shift weight support from a leg to the other.
  • When sitting: it is recommended to use a chair suitable for the lumbar area;
  • The chair seat must allow to keep knees folded and feet well laid on the ground.
  • When lifting a weight. Knowing how to lift a weight in the correct way it is really useful to prevent low back pain: it is important to avoid using the back while doing it. Legs must be folded so that arms are at the same level of the object that needs to be lifted ; the object must be kept near the body. Moreover, it is better to avoid putting weights over the head.
  • When sleeping: in general the advice is to sleep on a hard mattress, even if recent studies recommended medium-hard ones. Avoid pillows which are too thick because they force the neck to bend excessively.

Self healing

  • It is important to avoid too long periods in bed: a light physical activity helps the recovery, obviously avoiding those movements that increase pain.
  • If lumbago is caused by an acute trauma it can be useful to initially apply ice. The latter can be applied for 15 minutes several times a day. Once spasm and acute pain are gone, heat can be applied.
  • With regard to body belt and corset, opinions are sometimes discordant therefore it is necessary a suggestion of an orthopedic specialist. In fact, even if they help keeping warmth on the damaged area, they tend to weaken the back muscle in the long term. For this reason it is better to do some exercises in order to reinforce the musculature.

Lumbago - How Medications Can Be Of Help?

Lumbago or Lower back pain is a condition that is characterized by mild to serious pain or uneasiness in the lower back region. Lower back pain is more prevalent among the youth whose work includes physical exertion or sitting for long hours and is also common in individuals belonging to the 'retirement age' because of their sedentary lifestyles. The pain might be acute (sudden and extreme) or chronic if it has been endured over a span of three months.

The most common causes of lower back pain are:

  1. Overuse of the muscles and includes strains or sprains of soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments and vertebral compression fractures.
  2. Pressure on the roots of nerves due to conditions such as spinal canal stenosis (narrowing down of the spaces within the spine) or herniated disc (a condition of the rubbery disc present between the spine bones (vertebrae)).
  3. Osteoarthritis is a condition wherein the shock absorbers, found in the joints, progressively break down.

When it affects the spine, the condition causes back pain by stiffening the spinal joints. Symptoms of Lumbago (Low back pain) include:

  1. Stiff back
  2. Numbness in the legs
  3. Loss of weight
  4. Difficulty in urinating
  5. Sciatica, which is the pain running down the lower back to hips, legs and thighs. This occurs due to a compression by an intervertebral disc in the back, which leads to a pinched nerve.

How to diagnose lower back pain or a slip disc?

Some methods that can be utilized for diagnosing back include Xray, CT Scans, Myelogram and MRI scans.

Treatment options available -
Exercises along with correction of bad posture for relieving back pain are a common component of any treatment plan. Factors such as type and severity of the pain as well as the patient?s history can help in determining the type of treatment that can be administered. In most cases, the recovery time is usually six weeks without surgery. Typical treatment of back pain includes use of muscle relaxants, painkillers and physiotherapy. Surgery is suggested in severe cases. Some other treatments are discussed below:

  1. Rest: A period of rest and inactivity would help the injured tissues to recuperate and relieve back pain. However, extended periods of rest lead to weakening of muscles and hence might prolong the existing back pain.
  2. Heat and ice packs: Both heat and ice therapies are used according to the patient's preference to reduce inflammation.
  3. Medications: A large variety of prescription and over-the-counter medicines are available. Some reduce back pain caused by inflammation and others prevent the pain signals from travelling to the brain. Examples would include acetaminophen, celecoxib and diclofenac.
