Haemoglobin, which appears to be a vital protein in the human red blood cells (RBCs), is concerned with the transportation of dissolved oxygen to the different body tissues. A fall in the level of haemoglobin in the red blood cells can give rise to the condition commonly referred to as anaemia. Anaemia may be of several types, out of which, iron deficiency anaemia appears to be one of the most common types of anaemia. This condition is found to occur due to the lack of an essential mineral, i.e. iron in the blood of the patient. When such a condition occurs due to the scarcity of iron within the body, the blood fails to carry the necessary amount of oxygen to the concerned body tissues.

In women, throughout their puberty, iron deficiency anaemia is a very common due to loss of haemoglobin in blood, that is caused from heavy flow during menstruation or in case of pregnancy.

Generally in the initial stage of iron deficiency anaemia no such symptoms are notified due to its mild effects. But as the person suffers from iron deficiency, it tends to more severe anaemic conditions. The main symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia involves weakness, pale/ whitish skin colour, drowsiness, poor appetite, chest pain, headache, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, lack of interest in doing work, nausea and others. Pregnant women often suffer from some of the above mentioned symptoms because of lower intake of the mineral iron in their diet.

A proper diagnosis by an experienced physician is a prerequisite for successful treatment for this condition. Test of blood cells as prescribed by the concerned doctor is considered to be helpful. In case of bleeding from any internal organ, it should be taken into medical concern.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

The treatment of iron deficiency anaemia involves some tests, i.e. tests for blood cells, tests for haemoglobin count and tests for internal bleeding. Anaemia can be detected normally by a complete blood cell test (CBC tests). If not, then further tests are required. Intake of iron pills can help recovering this anaemia. Healthy diet including mineral iron might be helpful. However it is always recommended for a person suffering from any of these symptoms to consult an experienced doctor to be more precise with the case. Oral iron therapy with oral ferrous iron salts is effective for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia.

During pregnancy or after child birth women should be under regular routine checkups to avoid any unfavourable conditions regarding iron deficiency. If any woman is under improper nutrition diet then it must be taken into concern so that both the mother and the child get appropriate quantity of vitamins and minerals to avoid iron deficiency anaemia.

Iron is an essential nutrient and mineral that is required by adults and children alike. Iron helps move oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and helps muscles store and use oxygen. It is especially important for children because it aids development and prevents anaemia. Untreated iron deficiency in children can cause physical and mental delays. It can lead to less healthy red blood cells in the child's blood stream which will cause a delay in the growth of physical and mental faculties.

Risk factors for iron deficiency in children

Infants and children at highest risk of iron deficiency include:

  1. Babies who are born prematurely or have a low birth weight
  2. Babies who drink cow's milk before age 1
  3. Breast-fed babies who aren't given complementary foods containing iron after age 6 months
  4. Babies who drink formula that isn't fortified with iron
  5. Children ages 1 to 5 who drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of cow's milk, goat's milk or soy milk a day

For older children, good sources of iron include red meat, chicken, fish, beans and dark green leafy vegetables. Between ages 1 and 5, don't allow your child to drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of milk a day.
  3. Enhance absorption. Vitamin C helps promote the absorption of dietary iron. You can help your child absorb iron by offering foods rich in vitamin C, such as melon, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes and potatoes.
  4. Consider iron supplements. If your baby was born prematurely or with a low birth weight or you're breast-feeding a baby older than 4 months and he or she isn't eating two or more servings a day of iron-rich foods, talk to a child's doctor about oral iron supplements.

Anemia is a condition where the red blood cell count is reduced due to deficiencies within the system. This is usually caused by a lack of iron, folate and other related nutrients in the diet. Today, I get test report of my mother in which thyrocare representative ask me there is diabetes, THYROID AND IRON DEFICIENCY .IN LAB REPORT, iron value in report 42.5, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) value is 7.99, hba1c value 9.4, average blood glucose (ABG) value is 223. hemoglobin value 9.5 and platelet count value is 507 hence cholesterol, and uric is normal. What is the suggestion or treatment is best for my mother. And what is the treatment period.

Hello, thanks for the query. From the details given it appears she has uncontrolled diabetes, subclinical hypothyroidism and iron deficiency anemia. She needs treatment for diabetes and anemia. Subclinical hypothyroidism does not need any treatment. It needs to be observed every 6 months. Diabetes treatment is for lifetime. Anemia needs about 6 months treatment with iron, B12 & folic acid supplement. Thanks.

Hi You need to take green leafy vegetables, dates and jaggery which is good source of iron. But this level of Haemoglobin needs to be treated by tablets and injection as you are pregnant. It will not be improved only by dietry changes.

How to maintain the level of Vitamin D

Hi, viewers of Lybrate. I am Dr. Vishwas, here to give you some insight on some common medical illnesses that we come across. Now you must have seen that on and off, we get, advice by our doctors to check our Vitamin D and calcium level. And obviously, you must have seen, that Vitamin D has been found very low. It may be around 5 or 6 or may be below 10, and that is something which is very alarming. The normal level of Vitamin D, as a hormone, which is to be maintained in blood has to be at least 30, in International Units. And those, patients who, you know are on long term low levels of Vitamin D, complain of many things such as body ache, fatigue, low immunity; and then they suffer from some kind of infections, or some kind of, all the time, discomfort, weakness, lack of strength.

So we as doctors, always recommend getting Vitamin D levels checked at least once in a year. So once we start with therapy of Vitamin D, one has to remember that the sachet or the tablet has to be taken, early in the morning. It has to be taken on an empty stomach. The standard time should be between 6 am to 8 am. To take the dose, may be weekly once, or may be weekly twice, not more than. And the units normally recommended is around 60000 units, which is available in any brands. So I would always recommend my patients to take once in a week for 12 weeks period, which is sufficient, and then one should stop it; because over Vitamin prescription, as well as over Vitamin consumption can damage your liver.

We have found sometimes patients landing into liver issues because of hypervitaminosis. So both things are not good, very low levels and very high levels. You should maintain the optimum levels. Vitamin D, as well as calcium, both hand in hand, should go together, as a supplement, and they build up your loss of bones, especially in cases of osteoporosis; where the bones have, some kind of a vacuum inside and some kind of weaknesses which can make them easily fracturable, and also cause some kind of pain and discomfort. So Vitamin D, calcium, these are some kinds of investigation which are especially essential for bone health, to take care.

We also suggest sometimes to get Parathyroid Hormone Check Up (PTH). Parathyroid Hormone deficiency can also cause easy fractures. How to maintain the level of Vitamin D

Hi, viewers of Lybrate. I am Dr. Vishwas, here to give you some insight on some common medical illnesses that we come across. Now you must have seen that on and off, we get, advice by our doctors to check our Vitamin D and calcium level. And obviously, you must have seen, that Vitamin D has been found very low. It may be around 5 or 6 or may be below 10, and that is something which is very alarming. The normal level of Vitamin D, as a hormone, which is to be maintained in blood has to be at least 30, in International Units. And those, patients who, you know are on long term low levels of Vitamin D, complain of many things such as body ache, fatigue, low immunity; and then they suffer from some kind of infections, or some kind of, all the time, discomfort, weakness, lack of strength.

So we as doctors, always recommend getting Vitamin D levels checked at least once in a year. So once we start with therapy of Vitamin D, one has to remember that the sachet or the tablet has to be taken, early in the morning. It has to be taken on an empty stomach. The standard time should be between 6 am to 8 am. To take the dose, may be weekly once, or may be weekly twice, not more than. And the units normally recommended is around 60000 units, which is available in any brands. So I would always recommend my patients to take once in a week for 12 weeks period, which is sufficient, and then one should stop it; because over Vitamin prescription, as well as over Vitamin consumption can damage your liver.

We have found sometimes patients landing into liver issues because of hypervitaminosis. So both things are not good, very low levels and very high levels. You should maintain the optimum levels. Vitamin D, as well as calcium, both hand in hand, should go together, as a supplement, and they build up your loss of bones, especially in cases of osteoporosis; where the bones have, some kind of a vacuum inside and some kind of weaknesses which can make them easily fracturable, and also cause some kind of pain and discomfort. So Vitamin D, calcium, these are some kinds of investigation which are especially essential for bone health, to take care.

We also suggest sometimes to get Parathyroid Hormone Check Up (PTH). Parathyroid Hormone deficiency can also cause easy fractures. And it is very rare, but one should also check PTH hormone levels, that is, Parathyroid Hormone level, if it is recommended by your doctor and if Vitamin D correction is not helping the patient. So, early morning exposure during sunrise, or evening exposure during sunset, for 3 to 5 minutes, that is sufficient. Because of skin, as well as kidney, both play part in Vitamin D formation, and it is one essential hormone, required for all 206 bones of your body. With the new advent of Vitamin D therapy, we also have sachet, we have a tablet, we have injections. So, depending upon your condition, your physician will recommend some or the other form of Vitamin D. Even the young child also needs Vitamin D supplementation. Nowadays even milk is fortified with Vitamin D, which is also a good step towards better health.

I am Dr IPS Kochar, a pediatrician and endocrine diabetologist. Today, I am going to talk on very intresting topic, Vit-D which everyone wants to know.

So, Vit-D is essential to maintain calcium. It basically maintains the bone metabolism of the body and it is done basically through absorption of calcium from the intestine and also from renal tubular absorption of calcium. When VIt-D becomes deficient, the hormone PTH is released which tries to maintain calcium and phosphorus in the body. The deficiency of Vit-D in different groups are different. You can have it in the new born periods, in the childhood period or in the adolescence.

So, in the new born period, children may have some features like staying more tired, the problems related to bones such as bow legs i.e, curving of legs. Then there may be some other problem which is called genu valgum in which they have knock knees. These are some conditions which you can find. These are called as Rickets. And this ricket is responsible for Vit-D deficiency.

In the country like India which has a plenty of sunlight, why we are still facing Vit-D deficiency?

One of the reason is that lifestyle ahs changed. We are involved in more of a technical lifestyle. The best time to absorb Vit-D is 9-11 am in which one can absorb maximum amount of Vit-D. But at this time most of us are in teh office, the children are in the schools and the housewives are inside the house. So you are hardly able to absorb Vit-D.
Secondly. there is lot of pollution which does not allow us to absorb Vit-D
Covering of the body is another major factor.
There is a smog which blocks the vit-D
The sources of vit-D are very few. Most of the vit-D is in non veg. But maximum of the Indians are vegetarian. The best sources of Vit-D are fish, eggs. The one important thing all vegetarian must know that they can take mushroom. This will help in maintaining the Vit-D level. So, there are least sources of VIt-D.

There are two types of Vit-D, Vit-D2 and Vit-D3.

Vit-D2 is Ergocalciferol and Vit-D3 is Cholecalciferol. So we can get maximum of the Vit-D from the sunlight which we are not getting. In order to cover up Vit-D deficiency, we need to consume Vit-D. Otherwise children may suffer from Bow legs or genu valgum. In the adolescence, people may suffer from osteomalacia in which there is pain in the legs and bones. So, all these conditions are aggravated.

How to overcome with the deficiency of Vit-D?

Regularly take Vit-D. You can either take it weekly form or in the daily form. Consulting a doctor will be helpful. Also, Vit-D prevents the chances of cancer, hypertension, Diabetes, repeated infection in the children. Everybody should take Vit-D either weekly or daily form.

Hi, this is Dr.Umesh Alegaonkar from Thane, Sampada hospital and I am discussing the Current epidemics of D3 deficiency in the Indian Society. Huge epidemics and a huge number of patients are currently being diagnosed with vitamin D3 deficiency. First of all, Vitamin D3 deficiency is not so widely accepted by the practicing consultant. And more or fewer patients having the same symptom coming to the consulting are very less. But as we are diagnosing more and number of vitamin D3 cases we know the burden of vitamin D3 deficiency which the society is having. Patients usually come with weak bone pains, myalgia; there are usually complaints of morning stiffness, they experience huge pain in both their feet as they touch the ground early in the morning.

We also find irritability and changes in behavior, brittleness of skin, loss of hair, decreased appetite and apathy. All these are related sometimes, which by and large may be related to other illnesses also, systemic illnesses, I am talking about. But yes they only remain peculiar to the vitamin D3 deficiency. The main cause is dietary deficiency and even though the patient supplements himself with sufficient amount of vitamin D3 deficiency they don t have adequate exposure to the sunlight in the morning hours, because the morning hours the skin really absorbs the sunrise and it helps the vitamin D3 to get converted into the liver and that s how the calcium is absorbed from the intestine being actually utilized by the bone and it becomes stronger. Unavailability of the sun or under-exposure to the sunlight in the daytime is really a cause of concern we are currently facing because of the sedentary lifestyle of the patient, car to car type of a lifestyle with no exposure to the sun at all. This is a major cause I really think because of which there is an epidemic of vitamin D3 deficiency.

A simple measure is to expose yourself to the sunlight early in the morning, a good supplement of vitamin D3 diet is the actual issue where we can treat the vitamin D3 deficiency. Long term complications are usually seen. The patients have weak bone pain; they usually suffer from lumbar spinal arthritis and cervical spinal arthritis. They come with unusual fractures of the hips and the bone. The bones are usually osteopenic and osteoporotic and these symptoms are further aggravated in the case of a woman who is in a post-menopausal state. So currently I would
