You have not been explained properly about illness. Depression or any other psychiatry illness is as common as other physical illnesses. And if necessary medications should be continued for longer period. As not taking medication will be more harmful to your son. For example, someone has diabetes or hypertension he should take medicine for long term for his own good. Same with medications for depression too can be taken for long-term without harm. But more poor compliance in taking medication and deciding about continuing or discontinuing medicine by your self without advice from an expert would be harmful for your son. So please give regular medicine and have regular consultations and don't do self treatment.

Only medications will not be effective. Your son needs sessions with a clinical psychologist. There are many therapietic techniques which can be useful for your son. Medicines just provide temporary relief. For long lasting effects psychological therapies will help to identify the problematic thoughts n beliefs going on in your son's mind.

Kindly talk about exact symptoms/behavioural complaints in your son, and the external emotional triggering stressful events that are troubling him, to fine-tune the drugs needed, and for a longer symptom-free period. Many symptoms of depression overlap with a few other disorders too. And a new onset of these other disorders should also be considered. Consult a psychiatrist with full history and review. Best of luck sir.

There are psychological causes of depression anxiety etc. Rehabilitation centers and medicines do not resolve these causes. That is why whenever the person faces the same or similar stressful situation he starts getting into depression and anxiety again. And this will keep happening untill and unless work on root causes is not done. Psychotherapy coupled with clinical hypnotherapy has shown great results in very time (in couple of months). Consult a good therapist. You can also contact me on Lybrate for a consultation or any information/query. Good luck.
