Hi, I got a thyroid test report for my daughter which states that the thyroid stimulating hormone is > 150. The last time it was 41 so I have been giving her a dose of 50 mg for 3 months and after that 25 mg daily. How come it has increased so much. What can be the reason and how to treat this.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Increase in TSH is too high. It is suggestive of totally inadequate dosage of Levothyroxine. Please tell me the height and weight mentioned in the query is your daughter or not? That is needed to calculate correct dosage of Levothyroxine. Usually much higher dosage is needed. Plus you have reduced dosage on your own. This has led to such an increase. Ideally when adequate dose is given TSH is maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L, at which all the symptoms are in check. It is absolutely essential to achieve the above mentioned TSH levels, to avoid serious complications related to hypothyroidism. Thanks.
