Hi, I am 60 years old female with a family history of heart attacks. My cholesterol at present is 233, I don't have sugar or bp. My physician advise me to take anti cholesterol medications and blood thinner, to avoid blockages in heart. I agree with cholesterol medications but do not feel like taking blood thinners. Is it necessary to take blood thinners daily, years back we use to take disprin sometimes in 2-3 months. I am trying to maintain low salt, oil and meat diet. Thank you.

Hello madam, if you do not have any symptoms like chest pain on exertion or breathing difficuty on exertion or any history of heart disease, blood thinners can be stopped and cholesterol medicines can be continued. If you want onjective evidence of need of blood thinners, get ecg echo and tmt done and if all are normal then you can safely stop blood thinners. You also need sone lifestyle changes like regular brisk walk for at least 30 minutes a day, keeping weight in control to keep bmi < 25, high fiber diet, avoiding excess sugar and salt and avoiding oily junk food and red meat. Take care. Stay safe. Have a good day.
