I was prescribed with stalopam 5 mg by a doctor for 30 days. I have certain symptoms of feeling depressed, anxious and irregular heart beat. Though, bp and sugar are normal. However, after taking just one tablet of stalopam 5 mg I started feeling headache since morning to night which would be mild to moderate. After using it for 5 days I discontinued it and headache was gone. Question is, what exactly for doctor had prescribed the medicine and what could be probable reason for headache?

Dear Rahul, Stalopam may give headache occasionally in few patients. It is very rare with 5 mg dose. Probably you are too sensitive for SSRI group of antidepressants. But there are other antidepressants with different kind of side effects. You can talk to your doctor and get a prescription. There could be other causes for headache also with your weight, depression and anxiety. Needs investigations if headache occurs without this tablet.

Hello lybrate-user - stalopam (escitalopram) is a common and effective medication used to treat depression and anxiety. - so it looks like an appropriate choice for your symptoms - headache can sometimes occur as a side effect when starting to take escitalopram. It usually settles after a week or two. - since you have already discontinued there is nothing to worry about the medication - if anxiety and depression symptoms continue you can have therapy/counselling. What stalopam was prescribed for (diagnosis) should be in your prescription. Most probably reason for headache should be stress, but the medication is also a rare possibility (does not occur in most of the persons taking it, and commonly may relieve headache also). Consult your psychiatrist and inform him the issue - a change in medication is probably needed.
