Vitamin Deficiency: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

When a person has deficiency of one or more than one vitamin/s, he/she suffers from vitamin deficiency or avitaminosis. Avitaminosis can cause severe long-term damage to a person’s health if left untreated. The symptoms of the condition depend on which vitamin or vitamins is/are missing. For this reason, doctors find it difficult to diagnose avitaminosis. More often than not, avitaminosis occurs due to lack of the Vitamin B1 or several other useful elements. Some of the factors that can lead to vitamin deficiency in a person are: abnormal functioning of digestive tract, unhealthy diet, faulty metabolism, heart, liver or kidney disease, genetics, old age and child bearing and breast feeding for women.

The symptoms of vitamin deficiency will depend on which vitamin/s is/are missing. However, the general symptoms of avitaminosis are weakness or fatigue, abnormal functioning of the musculoskeletal system, improper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, vision problems, skin problems, sleep disorder and mood swings. However, majority of the people who suffer from avitaminosis exhibit some form of spots on their hands.

The treatment of avitaminosis depends on diagnosing which set of vitamins are deficient in the patient’s body. A person cannot just randomly go to the drugstore and buy vitamins and consume them at his/her own free will. This will only aggravate the condition. A person suffering from vitamin deficiency will have to take the advice of the immunologist, therapist or pediatrician in case of children to chalk out the proper treatment plan.

How is the treatment done?

There are different forms of this condition. Avitaminosis is generally due to the deficiencies of Vitamin B1, E and A. On the other hand, the complete absence of all the necessary vitamins from a human body is termed hypovitaminosis. Hypovitaminosis can cause serious problems and it can even interfere with the physical and psychological development of a child if he/she is affected by it.

When a person suffers from deficiencies of Vitamin A, D, E and B1, he/she is suffering from spring avitaminosis. Winter avitaminosis can occur due to: malnutrition, long use of a particular medication, lack of vitamins, mostly E and B1, digestive problems and as a consequence of long-term treatment. Children and winter people are the most affected by winter avitaminosis. Avitaminosis in children can occur due to a wide range of reasons.

The treatment of avitaminosis requires a person to intake those vitamins that are deficient in his body. Supplements can be used to overcome this problem but changes in diet are also the need of the hour. The first step that a person suffering from avitaminosis can take is: taking multivitamins twice a year. This is because the body immunity is weakest during spring and autumn. A person can take multivitamins during this period so that he/she receives healthy doses of all the essential vitamins. Secondly, a person is required to take specialized supplements to overcome the deficiencies of some vitamins that are not readily available. Vitamin D is not available in normal food sources and hence, a person needs specialized supplements to overcome its deficiency. Finally, a well-balance diet will surely keep the risks of developing avitaminosis at bay.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

No laboratory or clinical studies are required to understand whether a person is eligible for treatment or not. A person suffering from some or all of the general symptoms associated with vitamin deficiency is eligible for treatment. The symptoms are: vision problems, weakness and fatigue, sleep disorders, mood swings, improper functioning of musculoskeletal system and the gastrointestinal tract and skin problems. A therapist or immunologist will personally examine a patient and then determine whether or not he/she is eligible for treatment of avitaminosis.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

A person who has not experienced any of the symptoms of vitamin deficiency is not eligible for the treatment. A person becomes eligible only after he has been thoroughly checked and diagnosed by a physician. However, supplements for Vitamin D should be taken by people after consulting the doctor. People with some other serious illness, and who take medications for it, may not be eligible to take supplements.

Are there any side effects?

Many multi-vitamin products contain minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc. These may cause some side-effects like increased urination, teeth straining, uneven heart rate, confusion, muscle weakness and uneven heart rate. Supplements of Vitamin D has a number of side-effects such as elevated blood levels, high levels of calcium in blood, nausea, vomiting and poor appetite, loss of bones, problems of kidney and gastric troubles including constipation and diarrhea.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

However, a person may again suffer from avitaminosis due to an unhealthy lifestyle and also due to some other medical condition. Hence, the results are not permanent.

Popularly known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is essential for optimal bone health. Though calcium is the important ingredient of the bones, vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and so contributes to good bone health.

Causes- Vitamin D is naturally formed by the body on exposure to sunlight and is present in dairy products, fish, fish oils, egg yolk, etc. However, use of good sun protection, lactose intolerance, and vegan diet followers can have vitamin D deficiency.

Symptoms- While bones are primarily affected due to vitamin D deficiency, there are other symptoms indicative of vitamin D, as noted below.

  • Constant bone pain, even causing fractures

  • Deformed bone formation in children

  • Muscular weakness

  • Severe asthma in children

  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Increases risk for colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer

  • Cognitive impairment

  • Increases autoimmune disorders like inflammatory bowel disease and multiple sclerosis

  • Increased infections including flu

  • Reduces ability of DNA for repair

  • Improves overall metabolic processes

  • Produces insulin resistance, thereby affecting sugar processing

Vitamin D plays an important role and a healthy individual would have about 20 to 50 nanograms per millilitre of blood. As noted above, it is naturally formed by the body when exposed to the sun. However, those are not exposed to the sun too much, are obese, or are lactose intolerant, may have problems making sufficient vitamin D and may be deficient.

Management- There are two key components to management of this condition – prevention and treatment.

Prevention requires that you get adequate sun exposure so that the body is able to make the required amounts of vitamin D. About 15 minutes of sun exposure per day is recommended. If the weather does not allow for adequate sun exposure, make sure your diet contains foods with vitamin D in them. Eat grains and dairy products that are fortified with vitamin D. Foods such as fish, fish oils and egg yolk are also rich in vitamin D.

While sun and diet are usually sufficient to prevent vitamin D deficiency, there are increasingly more people with a deficiency of this essential vitamin. This is due to increased practices of vegan diet, sun protection, lactose intolerance, and of course obesity.

For those who end up with vitamin D deficiency, supplementation is the most viable solution. A word of caution though when taking supplements. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and can accumulate in the body. Higher levels can cause heart and kidney damage and therefore are not healthy for the body.

Get bone density checked by DXA scan. Don't rely on cheap BMD scans. And vitamin D3 deficiency. U can take capsules also. Nothing wrong in taking injection. But if you do not want pricks take cap. Uprise D3 60k once a week for 10 weeks. And then once monthly for 6 months. Along with calcium supplements.

Start injection arachitol 6lac once a week for six week and physiotherapy also needed for strenthening of core muscles n quadricep.

In my blood report Vitamin D total is 9, and blood platelets is 130 X 1000, also having sugar 135. Please suggest some medicine for these problem.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. For vitamin D deficiency you may take that vitamin supplements. As regards platelets there is nothing needed. For blood glucose I need to know following details whether it is fasting or PP glucose level, then HbA1c%. I am having mild headache with light headedness and also feeling tired. Sometimes along with headache I am feeling like fainting and imbalanced while walking. I consulted general medicine physician. I was diagnosed with blood test and found that I am having vitamin d deficiency and vertigo problems. He prescribed me vitamin d deficiency capsules and vertin 8 mg tablet. He also suggested me to consult ent specialist. I consulted ent specialist. I was diagnosed for audiogram test. He told there is no problem in my ear. He suggested me to consult neurologist If vertigo problem persist. Still I am having feeling of fainting while walking. Please give me a solution to my issue.

There are different reasons for giddiness. If you have recurrent dizziness lasting for seconds when you Change your head posture like sleeping or getting up from bed then it is most likely BPPV. Even if you have B12 def you may get giddiness on closing eyes. So you should consult a neurologist to exactly diagnose what you have. You can continue vertin for 10 days. Take vit B12 supplementation also.

I am diagnosis with lax les and having medicine burpex in the morning 1 time and revtrill .5 in the evening. Also I am having b12 deficiency ,my age is 35 how long I have to take these medicine? I am diabetic and taking medicine tribetrol 2.

Medicine for B12 deficiency may be stopped or reduced when it reaches normal level in blood. Rivotril is given for anxiety. Try to be realist and avoid unnecessary thinking. You can stop it if you can control on yourself and accept reality. Burpex is given for intestinal motility disorders and hyperacidity. Can be avoided if you can control your diet by avoiding spicy, fried and sour food items. Keep your blood sugar controlled to avoid complications of diabetes.

I am Dr IPS Kochar, a pediatrician and endocrine diabetologist. Today, I am going to talk on very intresting topic, Vit-D which everyone wants to know.

So, Vit-D is essential to maintain calcium. It basically maintains the bone metabolism of the body and it is done basically through absorption of calcium from the intestine and also from renal tubular absorption of calcium. When VIt-D becomes deficient, the hormone PTH is released which tries to maintain calcium and phosphorus in the body. The deficiency of Vit-D in different groups are different. You can have it in the new born periods, in the childhood period or in the adolescence.

So, in the new born period, children may have some features like staying more tired, the problems related to bones such as bow legs i.e, curving of legs. Then there may be some other problem which is called genu valgum in which they have knock knees. These are some conditions which you can find. These are called as Rickets. And this ricket is responsible for Vit-D deficiency.

In the country like India which has a plenty of sunlight, why we are still facing Vit-D deficiency?

One of the reason is that lifestyle ahs changed. We are involved in more of a technical lifestyle. The best time to absorb Vit-D is 9-11 am in which one can absorb maximum amount of Vit-D. But at this time most of us are in teh office, the children are in the schools and the housewives are inside the house. So you are hardly able to absorb Vit-D.
Secondly. there is lot of pollution which does not allow us to absorb Vit-D
Covering of the body is another major factor.
There is a smog which blocks the vit-D
The sources of vit-D are very few. Most of the vit-D is in non veg. But maximum of the Indians are vegetarian. The best sources of Vit-D are fish, eggs. The one important thing all vegetarian must know that they can take mushroom. This will help in maintaining the Vit-D level. So, there are least sources of VIt-D.

There are two types of Vit-D, Vit-D2 and Vit-D3.

Vit-D2 is Ergocalciferol and Vit-D3 is Cholecalciferol. So we can get maximum of the Vit-D from the sunlight which we are not getting. In order to cover up Vit-D deficiency, we need to consume Vit-D. Otherwise children may suffer from Bow legs or genu valgum. In the adolescence, people may suffer from osteomalacia in which there is pain in the legs and bones. So, all these conditions are aggravated.

How to overcome with the deficiency of Vit-D?

Regularly take Vit-D. You can either take it weekly form or in the daily form. Consulting a doctor will be helpful. Also, Vit-D prevents the chances of cancer, hypertension, Diabetes, repeated infection in the children. Everybody should take Vit-D either weekly or daily form.

So we as doctors, always recommend getting Vitamin D levels checked at least once in a year. So once we start with therapy of Vitamin D, one has to remember that the sachet or the tablet has to be taken, early in the morning. It has to be taken on an empty stomach. The standard time should be between 6 am to 8 am. To take the dose, may be weekly once, or may be weekly twice, not more than. And the units normally recommended is around 60000 units, which is available in any brands. So I would always recommend my patients to take once in a week for 12 weeks period, which is sufficient, and then one should stop it; because over Vitamin prescription, as well as over Vitamin consumption can damage your liver.

We have found sometimes patients landing into liver issues because of hypervitaminosis. So both things are not good, very low levels and very high levels. You should maintain the optimum levels. Vitamin D, as well as calcium, both hand in hand, should go together, as a supplement, and they build up your loss of bones, especially in cases of osteoporosis; where the bones have, some kind of a vacuum inside and some kind of weaknesses which can make them easily fracturable, and also cause some kind of pain and discomfort. So Vitamin D, calcium, these are some kinds of investigation which are especially essential for bone health, to take care.

We also suggest sometimes to get Parathyroid Hormone Check Up (PTH). Parathyroid Hormone deficiency can also cause easy fractures. And it is very rare, but one should also check PTH hormone levels, that is, Parathyroid Hormone level, if it is recommended by your doctor and if Vitamin D correction is not helping the patient. So, early morning exposure during sunrise, or evening exposure during sunset, for 3 to 5 minutes, that is sufficient. If it is exposed to your skin, to get sufficient natural Vitamin D synthesis in your body. Because of skin, as well as kidney, both play part in Vitamin D formation, and it is one essential hormone, required for all 206 bones of your body. With the new advent of Vitamin D therapy, we also have sachet, we have a tablet, we have injections. So, depending upon your condition, your physician will recommend some or the other form of Vitamin D. Even the young child also needs Vitamin D supplementation.
