Music Therapy: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Music therapy, which is also known as active music therapy or passive music therapy, can be used to treat motor control problems and emotional impairment that is associated with a range of diseases and disabilities. Music has a strong and immediate influence over emotions and has been used in therapy since time immemorial. It helps to naturally increase the neuro-chemicals in our body that aid in elevating our mood. Music therapy has helped people with complex problems like schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease and also helps to decrease symptoms like depression and anxiety. It also aids in improving cognitive function.

It is based on the use of music by a therapist and a patient and this is done in a one-on-one setting or in a group. There are two types of music therapy: active music therapy and passive music therapy. There is active interaction between the therapist and patient in active music therapy. In case of passive music therapy, the patient normally remains at rest and listens to what the therapist tells him/her.

There are five different conditions for which music therapy has proved to be effective. The different conditions include autism, dementia and depression. Music played to the womb during late pregnancy help the newborn to be less agitated and more relaxed. Music therapy can also help to improve sleep quality.

How is the treatment done?

A music therapy session can be broadly divided into active and receptive techniques. Active techniques generally involve making music by chanting, singing, playing musical instruments or even composing or improvising music. The techniques used in receptive treatment include listening to and responding to music – through dance or by analyzing the lyrics of a song. Both active and passive techniques are combined to treat a person and they are usually used as the point of initiation of the whole treatment.

Music therapy helps to increase a person’s self-awareness and expression, stimulation of speech, self-acceptance, motor integration, improve communication and relationships with others and also help to imbibe a sense of belonging. Different individuals have different tastes in music and respond differently to different forms of music. Therefore therapists try to make sure that the melody as well as the lyrics of a selected song match with the psychological state and mood of the patient. Another essential component of music therapy involves composing original songs or even modifying already existing ones.

Music therapy helps a person to communicate using short phrases or singing words if he/she has trouble with communication due to a physical ailment. This therapy also helps a person having problems with movement to initiate, coordinate and finally time their movements. Music also helps children who suffer from autism. Group therapy not only helps a person to relax but also provides an outlet for pent-up feelings and also helps to improve the feeling of social connectedness among the members.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

A person suffering from serious ailments like Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s will derive some benefits from music therapy. Furthermore, people suffering from depression, mood-related concerns, substance dependency, autism, personality issues, insomnia and dementia are eligible for treatment. People can find relief from physical and psychological ailments by practicing music therapy. It is extremely beneficial for those who find it difficult to express themselves verbally. People normally manifest more interest in this therapy than in any traditional therapy.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

There is no hard and fast rule which determines who is eligible and who is not eligible for music treatment. People suffering from serious and psychiatric issues should consult a doctor and undertake alternate therapy. This is because music therapy may not be able to treat their condition effectively. So people suffering from serious ailments are not eligible for this treatment.

Are there any side effects?

There are no such side-effects of music therapy for the brain. However, if treatment is done with music that does not suit the psychology or mood of the patient, a person’s mental disorder may worsen. Listening to loud music for a long period of time may cause hearing impairment.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

There are no such post-treatment guidelines for music therapy. This is a therapy that mostly helps to deal with psychiatric and psychological disorders. People can continue with music therapy if they feel that they are benefitting from it. However, they may also need to go for alternate treatment to treat a chronic condition as music therapy does not completely eradictae the problem.

How long does it take to recover?

Music therapy uses music in an active or in a passive manner to deal with psychological conditions and even physical ailments. The time to recover depends on the type and severity of the ailment. A person with impaired motor skills may gradually respond to music therapy. A child suffering from autism will also take some time to respond to music therapy. Some people may experience some benefits faster than others. So it is difficult to pinpoint the exact recovery period.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Music therapy involves going to a therapist for a one-on-one session or taking part in a group therapy session. However, several music CDs are also available that help one to undertake this therapy at home only. CDs are available within a price range of Rs 100 – Rs 500. However, music therapy sessions to treat a particular condition can cost a person around Rs 200000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Music therapy helps to control the symptoms of a particular ailment but does not actually treat it. A person may benefit from music therapy as long as he/she is undergoing the therapy. He/she might need to adopt alternative measures if he/she suffers from a chronic ailment or from some serious disease. However, children with autism and other people who have problems in expressing themselves may experience some permanent results by continuously undertaking music therapy.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Music therapy is itself an alternative mode of treatment. This is a unique treatment and there are no such alternatives to it.

How Can Homeopathic Remedies Treat Infertility Issues?

For a couple, nothing can be more gratifying and enthralling than observing the two red lines in a pregnancy test (indicating a positive result). However, for some, going the family way may not be smooth sailing. Infertility problems are nothing new. Surprisingly, over the last decade or two, incidences of infertility have seen a steady elevation. Infertility is not always an outcome of medical conditions or health ailments. External factors including our choice of foods and the lifestyle we lead can be instrumental in triggering infertility and related gynaecological problems. Getting to the root of the problem and coming up with an effective treatment is of prime importance to deal with infertility.

The goodness of Homeopathic Medicines in dealing with Infertility:
With an impressive success rate in treating infertility (both in men and women), Homeopathy has become one of the most sought-after alternate forms of medicine. Hormonal balance is vital for the healthy functioning of the body, including the reproductive system. Any disruption of the hormonal balance can trigger deleterious consequences affecting an individual beyond imagination. In many cases of infertility and gynaecological disorders, the hormonal imbalance is found to be the main wrecker in chief. In such instances, the Homeopathic medicines aim at restoring the hormonal balance naturally without any complications or side-effects.

In some individuals, infertility can also stem from stress, anxiety, depression or some medical conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, diabetes, thyroid problems, obesity, to name a few. The Homeopathic medicines or treatment may not be the same for all affected people. It is based on the physical as well the mental health of the individual to ensure a long-lasting solution to the problem.

The first step in treating infertility involves bringing about positive changes in the lifestyle including the dietary habits.

  1. Foods rich in trans and saturated fats, simple sugars such as margarine, microwave popcorn, cookies, pastries, doughnuts or similar baked food items, aerated drinks and beverages, coffee, soy products, fried and processed foods, high glycemic foods can worsen the problem of infertility. Instead, enrich your diet with unsaturated fats and low glycemic foods. Increase your intake of fibrous foods. Fruits (apples, pear, grapefruits, oranges, plums, cherries), almonds, dried apricots, non-starchy and green leafy vegetables, whole grains, seeds (pumpkin, flax or sesame), quinoa, can work wonders to negate the factors that contributed towards infertility. These foods also aid in restoring the hormonal balance to a great extent
  2. Keep the mind and the body stress-free. Indulge in meditation, exercise or music therapy. Rest and sleep play a pivotal role in keeping the body (physical as well as mental) calm and relaxed.
  3. Try to maintain a healthy body weight can go a long way in dealing with infertility in both men and women.

Music & Reading During Pregnancy - How It Can Help?

Pregnancy is an enthralling phase that brings about many changes in a couple's (especially woman's) life. Carrying a life within oneself can be quite challenging. Ayurveda believes that for a healthy pregnancy, the doshas (Vata Dosha, Kapha Dosha, and Pitta Dosha) should be in perfect harmony. The aggravation of the dosha can wreak havoc in the pregnancy affecting the baby and the mother to a great extent. In this article, we will discuss the pivotal role played by music and reading during pregnancy, benefitting the mother and the baby both.

During pregnancy, it is a common sight to watch the mother talk to her baby in the womb. From her happiness to pain to anxiety, she shares them all with her baby. As per Ayurveda, a baby can be educated and cultured while they are still in the comfort of their mother's womb. Ayurveda emphasizes that a mother should read more during pregnancy. The hormonal changes and the other complications often trigger an aggravation of one or more doshas, leaving the woman stressed out and depressed. Reading helps a pregnant woman to relax. In some instances, reading has proved to even pacify the aggravated doshas. Since the baby can relate more to the mother's voice, reading can benefit the baby immensely.

Ayurveda suggests that during pregnancy, a woman should read more of spiritual books, books that give her happiness. Reading sad, depressing or horror related books can have a negative influence on the mother and even on the baby.

Pregnant or not, the significance of music therapy is immense. For the healthy physical and mental development of the baby, Ayurveda stresses upon positive thinking during pregnancy. Music comes with a healing effect that can help to keep stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts at bay. Be it the Vata, Kapha, or Pitta vitiation, there is music available to pacify each dosha, thereby restoring the dosha balance.

Ayurveda also states that the music vibrations can reach the baby in the womb, keeping the baby calm and ensuring a better mental agility. Just as music can heal a soul, it can also have a negative effect on a person. Thus, the choice of music is of prime importance during pregnancy. Refrain from loud music or songs that are sad and depressing. Ayurveda suggests that a pregnant woman should listen to more of soft, soulful, and spiritual music. Listening to shlokas, mantras, and other related chants and hymns can work wonders for the mother and the baby.

In addition to eliminating the negative energy and enhancing the stimulation of the brain in the baby, the healing music works wonders to open up and activate the chakras. There are seven chakras present in our body. The activation of these chakras plays a pivotal role in warding off a plethora of health problems.

Thus, in addition to a proper diet and lifestyle changes, reading and listening to music is highly beneficial during pregnancy and should be made a part of your daily routine. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

How Do Doctors Cope With Mental Issues?

How Do Doctors Cope With Mental Issues?

Doctors are our real saviors. From physical problems to mental issues, a doctor is needed to guide us all along. The medical professional can be quite challenging and demanding. Dealing with numerous patients and their problems every day is no joke. It can leave a person completely exhausted and burnt out. Doctors are also human beings. All these activities and daily struggle often take a toll, both on their physical and mental health. Unable to cope with the stress, many doctors (especially the young physicians) get into depression. They suffer from different mental issues (minor to serious).

Of late, there has been a mercurial rise in the number of doctors suffering from mental issues (stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, to name a few). As per a survey, women practitioners are at a slightly greater risk of facing mental issues than their male counterparts. To make matters worse, many doctors live in self-denial. They just refuse to accept the fact that there can be some problem (mental) with them. Many contemplate treatment as they fear this can jeopardize their career forever. They feel they will be socially and professionally isolated. But delaying the treatment or counseling will not help either. Like any other patients, they too need love, care, and most importantly, proper assistance.

  1. The first and the most important step is to accept the fact gracefully that there is some problem.
  2. Do not shy away from seeking an expert opinion or assistance. If the need arises, go for counseling. It is for your good.
  3. Your patients are your priority but do not ignore your health in the process. Take short breaks to avoid exhaustion and professional monotony. Go on a small vacation.
  4. In trying to achieve professional excellence, do not ignore your family. Spend at least an hour of quality time with your family every day. Spending time with your loved ones can be a great stress buster.
  5. Try and stay relaxed as much as you can. Meditation, music therapy, yoga, light exercise are important for the mind and the body to function normally.
  6. Take care of your diet. Try and include foods that will enhance your mood and lift your spirits.
  7. For doctors who are into drinking and smoking, it is advised to keep it within healthy limits.
  8. If there is anything that is bothering you, just let it out. Do not suppress your emotions.
  9. Try and follow a healthy sleep routine (though difficult for doctors). At least get 6 hours of sleep daily.
  10. Do not isolate yourself from other people. Mental issues are not a very big deal. Being a doctor, you should know this better. Most importantly, accept and love yourself.

Anxiety and mental issues can affect anyone, irrespective of their profession. The sooner you accept this, the faster you recover. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Naturopathic Integrative Oncology!

Facts:

  1. Cancer is the most dreaded and complicated non-communicable disease, with some getting cured and some getting a prolonged life after treatment.

  2. The conventional cancer treatment modalities especially chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery are believed to be costly, are known to have serious side-effects, and the disease can still relapse.

  3. There is an ever-increasing demand for traditional/ natural medicine by cancer patients.

  4. Majority of the cancer patients, worldwide, resort to complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) -

    • For reducing the side effects of conventional treatment, enhance quality of life (QOL) and improve clinical outcomes.

    • Apprehension of failure - of any single line of treatment failing to arrest/ cure the disease prompts patients/ caregivers to try out multiple approaches, at times frantically, with a hope to improve prognosis.

  5. Most of the patients do not disclose their CAM approaches to their medical oncologists.

  6. The treatment plans, in a multi-dimensional approach as mentioned above, thus are largely un-coordinated and enhances the risk of drug interactions and adverse events which can jeopardize the chances of achieving the overall treatment goals.

What is Naturopathic Integrative Oncology?

Naturopathic Integrative Oncology attempts bringing in appropriate CAM therapies that are evidence-based, safe, effective and which synergistically complement the conventional treatment modalities making the treatment as a whole all the more effective through improved/ optimized clinical outcomes (especially QOL & OS) and reduced adverse events. It helps manage symptoms, control side-effects, improve the state of physical & mental wellbeing, and speed up recovery. An integrated approach to treatment not only helps add days to the life of a patient but also helps add life to the days that a patient gets to survive.

Why Naturopathic Integrative Oncology?

  1. Cancer is a very complicated disease and its management presents with an enormous challenge. While the standard of care, by virtue of having demonstrated high clinical efficacy, have been chemotherapy, radiation and / or surgery, there still are treatment challenges owing to side effects, drug resistance, and irresponsiveness to conventional treatment of certain advanced stage cancers. It hence requires a strategic, well-researched, holistic & all encompassing/ integrated team based approach to control the same effectively. This necessitates the use of suitable CAM therapies as an adjuvant to conventional therapy.
  2. Improved clinical outcomes, especially quality of life (QOL) & overall survival (OS). It facilitates patients not only exist but also live life well.
  3. Avert adverse events/ reactions that may result owing to an oversight of the integrative oncology essentials.
  4. Cost effective treatment and increased patient satisfaction. It allows a customized/ individualized integrative treatment for each patient basis his financial status, clinical history, diagnosis, current treatment regime, spiritual belief, psychological & physical adverse effects etc all.

How (& Where) can Naturopathic Integrative Oncology Help?

  1. Integrative Palliative Support (CAM)

    • For ameliorating cancer symptoms & side effects of cancer therapies thereby improving QOL. To exemplify, anxiety, depression, cancer related pain, weakness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hiccups, diarrhoea, gas/ flatulence, mucositis, alopecia, constipation, anorexia, cough, sleep disturbance/ insomnia, headache, anaemia, peripheral neuropathy etc all can be managed effectively using CAM therapies.

    • Palliative support, in line with the above-mentioned, can be rendered at any point during a patient’s illness to help him feel comfortable. However, should there be any severe aggravation of existing symptoms or acute health conditions, one needs to promptly seek emergency & competent medical help, as locally available, to address the same suitably.

  2. Integrative Cancer Treatment (CAM) for patients who -

    • Consciously choose to not go for full scale conventional treatment for whatsoever reasons.

    • Have advanced and intractable malignancies where conventional therapy has not been able to effectively control the disease progression. Such patients are likely to seek CAM treatment for not only improving QOL but also add days to life as possible contextually.

CAM Modalities in Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Treatment:

  1. Diet & Nutrition/ Lifestyle
  2. Herbal/ Botanical medicine
  3. Homeopathy
  4. Dietary supplements/ Vitamins
  5. Exercise, yoga, meditation
  6. Music therapy
  7. Acupuncture
  8. Reiki/ Prayer Healing
  9. Massage/ Reflexology

Please note that it is at the discretion of the naturopathic/ integrative oncologist to decide on the appropriate CAM modalities, subject to the individual patient’s needs and as appropriate contextually.

Successful Naturopathic Integration Requirements?

For the alternative medicine (s) one decides to integrate with (the current conventional treatment regime), it is essential on the part of the practioner(s) to clearly understand the following for a successful integration -

  • Patient’s current status including his clinical history, diagnosis, treatment regime, physical/ psychological make-up, belief system, financial capability and any other explicit requirement of the patient.
  • Evidence-based clinical efficacy & safety profile.
  • Action mechanism
  • Herb drug interactions
  • Side effects
  • Long term health impact
  • Pharmacokinetics
  • Dosage & Mode of administration etc all.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental health problem. Symptoms typically include recurring thoughts and repetitive actions in response to the recurring thoughts. A common example is recurring thoughts about germs and dirt, with a need to wash your hands repeatedly to "clean off the germs" However, there are many other examples like sexual thoughts, counting, checking, orderliness, etc. The usual treatments are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medicine, or both. Treatment often works well to reduce the symptoms and distress of OCD greatly. All the best.

Hi I have had tinnitus for almost 25 years but was a low pitch hissing sound until last year it took over and has gone high pitch. I avoided music as much as possible but was kind of pushed to go to a club and next day the ringing started. I know there is no medication for tinnitus there are other methods like you counselling CBT sound therapy are but what I want to know is there a cure in homeopathy or ayurvedic medication?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
There is no cure. For tinnitus, which is in fact very annoying as the sound in the head with no external source, you may use Tablet Elavil (Amitriptyline) 10 mg at bedtime to get some sound sleep. Also, Arches tinnitus formula may be helpful. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and take the medicine with consent. Get your ear examined for wax or perforation, which are the dominant causes of persistent tinnitus. It is a chronic condition and requires maintenance if dry environment, particularly if you go for aquatic sports or swimming. The treatment should be appropriate and to be adhered. Please check for your diabetic status and do not use antibiotic ear drops.

PRP Therapy And Prolozone Therapy
Good evening friends.

This is Dr. Nilay Shah. I run a medical tourism company, called as positive medical services. It s a medical tourism company, which provides one stop solution for many medical problems. The unique part of us, we are different as compared to modern medicine. We are into tolerant therapies. Various alternative therapies which I practised like chelation, ozone, PRP, prolozone, Vitamin C, etc. today we are going to talk about PRP therapy and prolozone therapy. Both of these therapies are very useful in ligament test and tender problems. PRP. That is the first thing about which we are going to talk about. The word itself, PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, Platelet Rich Plasma means its plasma which is rich in platelet. That means that is very useful in producing growth factors, which are produced naturally in the body. The way we do is we draw a certain amount of blood from the patient s vein, now this drug is taken into centrifugation machine. And we Centrifuge it. The moment we centrifuge it, there is a layer which is separated out, which is full of platelets. This layer, we take it in a syringe. And we inject at the place where there is a ligament tear or a tendon problem. Now how does it work? It works by producing growth factors, as I said earlier. These growth factors help in natural rebuilding or tissue repair. Most of the patients which we get for PRP are patients who are asked to go for arthroscopy or surgery. This is a natural way. Where our own tissue is helping it to rebuild again without any surgery or any other invasive procedures. And the best part is since you are using your own blood so there is no question of any side effects. Now, the next thing we are gonna talk about is Prolozone. Prolozone is very much similar to PRP, but the only difference is we are using a polorofent. Polorofrent is something like an irritant which produces a second inflammation to already a tissue which is already injured or damaged. Polorofrent and ozone, when we combine these together it is called as prolozone. Again the mechanism is very such similar to PRP. Whereby we are helping the tissue to get it repaired. The only difference is, in PRP what we were doing is we were using our own tissue for the repair, but here we are using prolofent, giving a second inflammation which is already injured and thereby giving it a second healing. Now, both this PRP and prolozone are very useful. In major cases where patients comes in a lot of pain, they don t want to go for a surgery, they are diabetic and there are certain complications for a surgery. This is the easiest and the safest way for getting the tissue repaired as compared to the convention medicine where you go for an arthroscopy or a tissue repair through a surgery. And since these therapies don t have any side effects as compared to convention medicine, people have been opting for it. And there is one of the major reason, throughout the world these therapies are getting popular. I hope I have been quite informative in explaining you guys PRP and proozone therapy. For more information. If you all at wich to contact me, you can contact me through Lybrate.

Thank you very much.

Panchakarma Therapies
Hi, I am Dr Sowmya Nair and I am an Ayurvedic physician with more than 13 years of experience in Ayurvedic treatments. I am specialised in Ayurvedic therapies. So, today I am going to speak about Panchakarma therapies.

In Ayurveda, Ayur means "life" and veda means "science". IN Ayurveda, we are treating patients according to the doshas i.e. vaat, pitt and cough. If a person has any imbalance between the vaat, pitt and cough then they will suffer from diseases. In order to balance the doshas, we are doing Panchaklarma therapies.

Panchakarma means 5 karmas. It is the main treatment in Ayurveda. Panch means "five" and karma means "treatment". There are

Vamana
Virechana
Nasya
Basti
Rakta moksha
These are the main treatments in Ayurveda. With these therapies, our body will be healthy and it helps in maintaining all the doshas- vaat, pitt and cough.

For problems like- sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, psoriasis, we do Vamana therapy.
Virechana is a loose motion therapy. In the pitta problems also we do Virechana therapy.
Nasya is the main treatment for the sinusitis, allergic rhinitis related problems.
Basti is the main treatment. It cures all the vada related diseases. LIfestyle diseases liek spondylitis, cervical spondylitis, lumbar spondylitis, slip disc cases, multiple psoriasis. In this, we are giving medicated decoction and medicated oil through anal route.
The last is the Rakta moksha. It is a blood ducting. It is a Kerala therapy and it is a Leech therapy. Leech therapy is very good for all pitt dosh related problem and skin related problems.
Nowadays the slip disc and osteoarthritis are very common. In osteoarthritis, there is degenerative changes in bones. If it affects your neck, it is called cervical spondylitis. If it affects your back, it is called Lumbar spondylitis. If it affects your knees, it is called ankylosing spondylitis. Osteoarthritis of knees are very common now a days.

How to prevent Osteoarthritis of knees?

Maintain your diet. Avoid eating junk food and oily food in order to maintain your body weight.
Do regular exercises. Do walk and yoga asanas to help preventing Osteoarthritis.
Maintain the right postures.
If slip disc affect the neck, you will have pain and numbness. If it affects the cervical, you will get cervical pain, neck stiffness, neck pain. If it affects the Lumbar region, then you will have difficulty in movements and pain in both the legs. For such problems, we have excellent treatment in Ayurveda.

Treatments-

In Osteoarthritis problems, we are doing janu basti, janu pichu, abhyangam, elakiri, podikizhi. All these treatments are very good to cure Osteoarthritis.

If it is cervical disc related problem, then we give greeva basti, greeva picchu, nasyam are very good for this problem.

We treat Lumbar disc related problem with Kadi basti, kadi picchu, abhyangam.
