Black Tea (Kali Chai)

Camellia sinesis plant produces black tea leaves. This is the same plant which also produces Green tea. Though, green tea is extracted from the fresh green leaves of the plan, black tea leaves are usually oxidized and then prepared and packaged. The process of oxidation helps the fresh green leaves to turn dark brown or black in color. They contain antioxidants known as polyphenols which help in protecting the damage of body cells from DNA. Gastroenteritis or stomach flu is one of the commonest stomach infections in us, humans. It occurs due to infection by different viruses like the norovirus, which spread due to contaminated food. Its symptoms can be quite nasty- You may feel nauseous, have fever, fatigue, bloating, stomach pain, chills, diarrhoea and muscle aches and pains. And depending on the type of virus you have, stomach flu can last from one to 10 days. But is there a way to cull this stomach bug? Yes, more than one.

Read on to know more

  1. Drinking the right fluids is key to fast recovery: Fluids are critical for recovery from gastroenteritis because you’re losing vital body fluids through vomiting and diarrhoea. The right fluids are clear liquids like water and broth. Electrolyte containing drinks like sports drinks are pretty useful and so is ginger tea as ginger has anti-microbial qualities and helps with nausea. Peppermint tea helps calm your stomach. What not to drink? 
    • Coffee
    • Black tea
    • Chocolate
    • Any drink with caffeine is contraindicated when a stomach bug bites. Caffeine affects sleep and a good night’s sleep is important for a full recovery.
    • Alcohol should also be strictly avoided as it’s a diuretic and can dehydrate you further.
  2. Stick to BRAT dietThe BRAT diet i.e bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast should be your mainstay during stomach flu. The diet has foods that are super easy to digest, contain a lot of carbohydrates to give you energy and provide you nutrients which you’ve lost through vomiting and diarrhoea.
    • Bananas: Bananas are easy to digest and replace lost nutrients like potassium. They also strengthen stomach lining.
    • Rice: Avoid brown rice as it has too much fibre, but white rice is good for sensitive stomach and provides energy from carbohydrates.
    • Applesauce: Provides energy due to carbs and sugars, and also contains pectin to help control diarrhoea.
    • Toast: Avoid whole-wheat bread because fibre is difficult to digest. White bread is easier to digest.
    • What to avoid?
      • Milk and curd are both to be avoided as they are hard to digest.
      • Fibre containing foods: When your bowels are loose, you don’t need the extra fibre.
      • Salty and oily foods like rich curries.
      • Do away with tomato sauces, tomato-based dishes, curries, and chillies.
  3. Rest: Rest is required to fight off the stomach bug. It’s better if you reduce your activities during the day.
  4. Medications: Stomach flu lasts for a maximum of 10 days and medicines like antibiotics don’t help as they can’t fight a virus. You can take medicines to help control symptoms of the problem, but you should do so sparingly. Like you can take ibuprofen for fever, headache, or muscle aches. Tylenol can also relieve fever and aches and has fewer side effects than ibuprofen and is easier on your stomach.

Cure Sinusitis Naturally!

The inflammation of the sinuses is a condition referred to as sinusitis. This can be caused by a number of factors including infection, allergies, air pollution, nasal polyps, septal deviation etc.

The symptoms of acute sinusitis may include - 

  1. Headaches 
  2. Pain over the affected sinuses 
  3. Stuffiness of the nose or Running nose 
  4. Fever 
  5. Loss of smell 
  6. Sore throat or cough 

Sinusitis is an uncomfortable condition on its own, but can also lead to a number of other complications. Ayurveda can be very effective in treating acute sinusitis effectively without side effects. Here are a few ways to treat sinusitis with Ayurveda:

  1. Steam inhalations - Steam is a decongestant that can successfully clear congestion and make sinusitis less painful. This can be done five to six times a day. If your sinus is causing excessive pain, this should be repeated regularly for at least a week. In cases of chronic sinusitis, you may even continue this form of treatment for two years. 
  2. Turmeric - Turmeric is one of the most effective cure for sinusitis and has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. One has to inhale the smoke generated when a turmeric stick is burnt. To do this take a piece of dry turmeric and dip in oil [coconut or gingely oil will do] and light it. When it starts burning put off the flame and you will see the at smoke is generated. Inhale this smoke through each nostril three times. repeat this twice daily for 3 days 
  3. Ginger-Garlic-Turmeric-honey-lemon recipe – Ginger, garlic and honey have powerful antimicrobial properties. Turmeric has anti bacterial and ad anti allergic properties. Lemon and ginger are powerful immune system boosters. A teaspoon of fresh ginger juice with garlic, turmeric and honey can help reduce the congestion caused by sinusitis. This should ideally be had early in the morning, as soon as you wake up and may be repeated in the evening. Similarly, drink warm black tea with lemon, ginger and honey several times daily. 
  4. Jala Neti - Neti is a yogic purification method and jala neti refers to purification by water. This is a simple technique that should be practiced daily to relieve problems related to sinuses. Fill a neti pot with lukewarm water and a little salt. Position the neti pot such that the spout is in one of the nostrils. Breathe through your mouth and tilt your head till the water starts flowing from one nostril to the other. Once the pot has been emptied, repeat the process with another nostril. This can be repeated any number of times. 
  5. Watch your diet - Ayurveda considers diet an important part of the treatment process. Avoid cold and oily food. Starting the day with a glass of luke warm lemon tea with honey is also said to be beneficial to sinusitis patients. Sweets, processed foods, dairy, liquor, carbonated drinks etc are other things to be refrained from when suffering from sinusitis. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ayurveda.

  • मोटापा घटाए: काली चाय में दूध और चीनी न होने के कारण वज़न कम किया जा सकता है। चाय में मौजूद एंटीऑक्सीडेंट मोटापा कम करने, फ़ैट बर्न करने और कोलेस्ट्राल कंट्रोल करने में बहुत लाभदायक होते हैं। चाय में दूध डालने से एंटीऑक्सीडेंट का असर कम हो जाता है। जबकि काली चाय पीने से 70% से अधिक कैलोरी बर्न होती है, जिससे वेट कम करने में आसानी होती है।
  • घटाए डायबिटीज का रिस्क: रोजाना ब्लैक टी के सेवन से डायबिटीज यानि मधुमेह होने की संभावना कम हो जाती है। इसके सेवन से ब्लड सर्कुलेशन सिस्टम से जुड़े तमाम रोग तथा टाइप 2 मधुमेह का भी खतरा बेहद कम हो जाता है।

  • Though bleeding from gums after deep scaling is normal in most of the cases and subsides after 2-3 hours without any conscious efforts, there are some patients whose gums tends to bleed more and often persists for longer than 72 hours depending upon severity of inflammation.
  • Prevention: when you face similar problem kindly inform your dentist. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. Just you have to prevent the clot to get dislodged from bleeding area. You can apply pressure gauze, black tea bag and can also use alums to rinse 3-4 times at home. 
  • Sometimes, those who are on blood thinner medications (aspirin) or anticoagulant therapy can also suffer with this problem. They should inform their dentist prior to undergo scaling.
