Itching problem of your scalp is due to dandruff. Dandruff may be the result of a dry scalp, or a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. It could also be caused by eczema, psoriasis, or, very commonly, an overgrowth of a yeastlike fungus called malassezia. You must try natural way to treat dandruff - 1 Tea tree oil - One study showed that shampoos with just 5 percent tea tree oil significantly improves the severity of dandruff. You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil to your favorite shampoo as you wash normally. 2. Baking soda - Your kitchen could hold the key to an itch-free, flake-free scalp. Wet your hair and then rub a handful of baking soda vigorously into your scalp. Skip the shampoo and go right to rinsing. Baking soda reduces overactive fungi that can cause dandruff. Your hair may get dried out at first, but after a few weeks your scalp will start producing natural oils, leaving your hair softer and free of flakes. 3. Apple cider vinegar - apple cider vinegar as a dandruff treatment, as the acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH of your scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. Mix a quarter cup apple cider vinegar with a quarter cup water in a spray bottle and spritz on your scalp. Wrap your head in a towel and let sit for 15 minutes to an hour, then wash your hair as usual. Do this twice a week. 4. Coconut oil - coconut oil is a "tried and true" dandruff treatment, and it smells nice too. Before showering, massage 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil into your scalp and let sit for about an hour. Shampoo normally. You can also look for a shampoo that already contains coconut oil. 5. Lemon - Just massage 2 tablespoons lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat this daily until your dandruff disappears. Lemon's acidity helps balance the pH of your scalp, which helps keeps dandruff at bay. 6. Table salt - The abrasiveness of ordinary table salt works great for scrubbing out dandruff flakes before you shampoo. Grab a saltshaker and shake some salt onto your dry scalp. Then work it through your hair, giving your scalp a massage. You'll find you've worked out the dry, flaky skin and are ready for a shampoo. Just try out the above things. Besides this if it doesn't work then contact us.

Premature hairing greying can be due to thyroid disorders, anemia, nutritional deficiencies, pollution, overuse of chemicals. You can take T EVION 400 mg once daily for 15 days, and cut a evion tablet and mix it with maha bhringraj oil and apply in hair alternatively. Increase your intake of milk and milk products, green leafy vegetable, increase protein intake like egg, fish, sprouts etc. Get yourself investigated for the same.

I am just 16 years old and started having grey hairs, its not my genetic problem as I have asked to my father and grand father none of them faced this problem at my age. What can I do tell me practical and effective steps please. Sometimes I get too much stressed about this problem!

MBBS
General Physician, Fatehabad
Hi lybrate-user, Premature greying of hair is dependent upon many factors such as heredity, lifestyle, sudden diet changes and stress. It also occurs if you suffer from medical conditions such as anaemia, hypothyroidism, tuberous sclerosis or neurofibromatosis. The main reason for hair greying is loss of pigmentation melanin from the hair follicles. While there are many specialised white hair solution products available, it is best to treat this problem with effective home remedies for grey hair that have absolutely no side effects. 1. Curry Leaves & Coconut Oil Massage - You’ve know curry leaves to add taste to your food. Now see how they revitalize your hair at a root level. Curry leaves contain Vitamin B which restores the natural colour pigment in the hair follicles and also prevents further greying of hair. Curry leaves also nourish the hair with essential nutrients and heal damaged roots. Being a rich source of beta-carotene, it stimulates hair growth and prevents hair fall. Coconut oil is nature’s best conditioner for dry, rough hair and makes it lustrous and healthy. So when the two come together, it’s a perfect match. 2. Curry Leaves & Buttermilk - Great for people with oily hair who balk at the thought of adding more oil to their hair, buttermilk is a rich source of lactic acid and effective in making hair smooth and manageable. Ingredients: / Curry leaves – handful / Buttermilk-1/4th cup - Directions for using curry leaves and buttermilk to prevent further graying of hair: / Crush the curry leaves finely and add to the buttermilk to form a smooth paste. / Apply as a hair pack on scalp ensuring that the hair strands are covered from root to tip. / After 30 minutes, wash off with a mild herbal shampoo. 3. Amla & Fenugreek Pack - Amla being a rich source of vitamin C is an ancient remedy for reversing greying, treating hair problems and improving hair health. Fenugreek or methi is loaded with vitamin C, iron, potassium, lysine, L-tryptophan and alkaloids that benefit hair by preventing premature greying and hair fall, and scalp dryness which causes dandruff. Ingredients: / Dried Amla – 5 to 6 pieces / Fenugreek – 1 tbsp / Coconut Oil – ½ cup - Directions for using amla and fenugreek pack for reducing grey hair occurrence: / Powder the fenugreek seeds until smoothand set aside. / Heat the oil, add the amla pieces to it and boil for 5-6 minutes. / Now add the fenugreek powder and boil for another minute. / Remove from flame, cool and strain. / Apply on scalp and hair before going to bed. / Wash off with a mild herbal shampoo in the morning. 4. Black Tea Massage - Black tea is loaded with antioxidants and caffeine. It is an effective hair growth stimulant and improves strength and elasticity of the hair strands which prevents brittleness and breakage. It adds a natural dark hue to hair. It is a perfect home remedy to prevent greying of hair as well as strengthen them. - Ingredients: / Black Tea Powder – 2 tbsp / Salt – 1 tsp - Directions for massaging with black tea to reduce white hair: / Boil 2 tablespoons of black tea in 1 teaspoon of salt in water for 2 minutes. / Remove, cool and strain. Use this to wash or rinse hair but do not use any shampoo. / Let it dry naturally. / Repeat it 2 to 3 times per week for best results. 5. Onion & Lemon Juice Pack - Colouring your hair regularly? Research shows that deficiency of antioxidant catalase and deposition of hydrogen peroxide in the hair roots are the two chief reasons for premature hair greying. Onion juice boosts up the level of catalase, thus restoring the natural colour of the hair strands. Lemon juice adds a healthy shine to hair and prevents excessive oiliness of hair. - Ingredients: / Onion Juice – 3 tsps / Lemon Juice – 2 tsps - Directions for using this hair pack to reverse greying of hair: / Mix both juices in a bowl and apply on scalp and hair evenly. / After 30 minutes, wash off with a mild herbal shampoo. / Repeat 4-5 times a week for 2 weeks. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

100 hair fall in a day is considered normal but if it falling more than it can be due to thyroid disorders, anemia, nutritional deficiencies, pollution, overuse of chemicals. You can take T EVION 400 mg once daily for 15 days, and cut a evion tablet and mix it with maha bhringraj oil and apply in hair alternatively. Increase your intake of milk and milk products, green leafy vegetable, increase protein intake like egg, fish, sprouts etc. Bad food habits coupled with stress will result in hair loss. Avoid-Rubbing wet hair vigorously will lead to hair breakage. Avoid brushing wet hair for the same reason. Don’t tie your hair tightly all the time as it puts pressure on the roots and causes hair to fall. Try not to use too many hair products as residue can build up. Rinse shampoo well to make sure hair follicles are not clogged. You can consult a dermatologist if it become severe.

How Ayurveda Helps Manage Baldness?

How Ayurveda Helps Manage Baldness?

Ayurveda, translated into science of life and longevity, has been practiced in India for more than 5000 years old and has gained worldwide popularity. It uses noninvasive and natural methods and produces minimal side effects and therefore is being widely accepted.

Ayurveda believes that the body is made of pitta, vata, and kapha doshas. Any disease is the result of imbalance between these or predominance of one over the others. Hair loss or alopecia is believed to be imbalance in the pitta dosha. This leads to slower hair growth, weak hair, and greater hair fall rate.

Something that affects image and self - esteem, many would like to cure or at least halt baldness. There are various treatment options that have a dual effect on baldness - reduce hair fall and promote hair growth, thereby providing a holistic treatment for baldness.

  1. Bhringraj Oil (Eclipta elba): It is used since centuries and promotes the normal hair growth cycle in an accelerated way.  It activates a large number of hair follicles and therefore, regular application is believed to help prevent alopecia (baldness).
  2. Amla (Phyllanthus emblica): While baldness has many reasons, dandruff is one of the most important and common causes. Amla is added to many hair oil formulations because of its proven effect to reduce dandruff. It acts on the fungi that thrive on the scalp and reduces inflammation of the scalp.
  3. Shikakai (Acacia concinna): Another very popular herb is the Shikakai. Used as a hair cleansing agent by many people, it is devoid of the chemical effect that shampoos carry. The pods are proven to prevent dandruff and promote hair growth.
  4. Tectona grandis: Another active ingredient of Ayurvedic formulations, the seeds of Tectona promote growth and development of hair follicles. Large number of follicles are activated, thereby producing thicker, fuller hair.
  5. Cuscuta reflexa: Another reason for baldness is hormonal imbalance, especially in males. Abnormalities with androgen, the male hormone, can trigger abnormal hair loss. Adding Cuscuta has been proven to reverse baldness by promoting a better anagen/telogen ratio, where hair follicle maturation happens.  In baldness cases, maturation happens only in about 20% of the follicles. Cuscuta activates the follicles and increases follicular density.  It also manages the hormonal imbalance by preventing conversion of testosterone into a variant called dihydrotestosterone that is believed to cause the damage.

While these and various other substances are believed to reduce baldness and promote hair growth, it is always important to remember that each body will respond differently to these substances. Thorough physical examination and a detailed history should be done before starting any of these products.

Patients should remember that these are naturally giving results without side-effects. They need to be highly patient to get results and there no ultraspeed therapy in ayurveda. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ayurveda.

Migraine

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Ghaziabad

A common neurological syndrome, Migraine is characterized by altered bodily perceptions, severe pounding headaches, nausea and irritability. This pounding or pain usually begins in the forehead, the side of the head or around the eyes and gradually gets worse. Bright lights or loud noises can worsen the condition. The headache can last for two hours or even up to two or three days.

Causes

Change in weather conditions, missing a meal, stress, alcohol and certain types of food items are considered to be common causative factors of Migraine. About 50% of women claim that their menstrual periods happen to be a significant trigger. Additionally, allergic reactions, exposure to loud noises or certain odors, smoking, or long exposures to computer screens/televisions could lead to Migraine attacks.

Symptoms

Ayurvedic View

The traditional science of Ayurveda does not regard Migraine as a case of prolonged headaches. On the contrary, it considers this condition to be caused by deep-rooted problems, including a sensitive nervous system and impaired digestion.

Improper diet and lifestyle causes aggravation of Pitta (Ayurvedic humor representing Fire) in the body. In an aggravated state, Pitta impairs digestion, leading to production of digestive impurities (known as ama). This ama gets stored in the manovahi strotas (mind channels), thereby becoming the cause for pains in migraine.

A sensitive nervous system lowers the ojas (energy) in the body. Ojas is the essence of all body tissues and provides strength to the nervous system and body. If you have a strong nervous system, you are able to fight against problems and carry on with your work with a healthy mind. Lowering of ojas causes migraine-like problems.

Ayurvedic treatment of Migraine therefore is centered on the pacification of Pitta Dosha, and restoration of digestive function in the body. Nervine tonics are also recommended to enhance the ojas, relax the mind and give strength to the nervous system.

Diet & Lifestyle Advice

  • Avoid hot, spicy foods, fermented foods, white sugar, white flour products, and sour or citrus fruits, because they aggravate the Pitta in your body.

  • Drink more water and eat more fiber, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

  • Avoid excessive sugar or salt, refined foods, animal products (meats and dairy), caffeine, tea, and alcohol, as these items will further lead to aggravation of Pitta.

  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun, as migraine headaches are predominantly a Pitta disorder and can be triggered by the hot sun.

  • Head massage with Bhringraj Oil is also beneficial. This massage gives a calming effect to your nervous system.

  • Headaches caused due to tension and worry can be alleviated through deep breathing and relaxation, especially in a lying down position in a quiet place. Inverted postures, or those where the head is lowered briefly, increase oxygen to the brain and can reduce headache-causing strain.

Home Remedies

  • If there is a burning sensation with you migraine headache, apply a paste of ground clay or sandalwood powder mixed with rose water.

In case of migraine headache due to inflamed sinuses, inhale steam with vinegar added to the water.

  • Mix ¼ teaspoon of clove powder with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon oil. Apply this paste on the affected area for 20-30 minutes.
