I am 53 years old. I have diabetes. I was advised to take glimy m to control my sugar level. But from last few days after taking the medicine my sugar level becomes very low (like 43/44 mg). So I have stopped the medicine. Should I continue to take the medicine?

Hello, Thanks for the query. The glucose levels mentioned are really too low. This can happen with Glimiperide. However, there are other glucose reducing drugs that can be taken like Tenelegliptin, Vidagliptin and Sitagliptin with Metformin. These drugs usually do not cause hypoglycemia. Thanks.

Dear lybrate-user, you have not mentioned your weight. For your height your weight should be about 50-53 kg if the weight is more than this, then you need to bring your weight down to this level with diet and exercise. You try the following change to your diet and exercise & monitor sugars with glucometer as advised below reduce the quantity of carbohydrate (rice, wheat, rava, maida) in each meal and increase the quantity of protein (dhal, egg white, fish or chicken). Take a lot of green leafy vegetables. Monitor blood sugars with glucometer as follows. Fasting and pp on wednesday and 2 hour after lunch and after dinner on sunday and maintain a record. The target values are fasting 80-110 and 2 hour post meal 120-160. If these levels are attained with diet and exercise for an hour per day and if you optimize your body weight you may not need tablets to control diabetes monitor your hba1c once in 3 months the target would be a value of 7% seek a consultation if these targets are not attained with diet and exercise
