Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulphate Test

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulphate Test

also known as: DHEAS

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulphate (DHEAS) is the name of a hormone produced by both men and women. The hormone is released from the adrenal glands and is the major contributor to the male traits. The test is carried out when DHEAs levels are imbalanced or not routinely measured. The main purpose of this test is to evaluate a person’s adrenal gland function. The DHEAS test is ordered in female when signs of virilization are observed. Also, if an infant girl is born with ambiguous genitalia. The test is also ordered whenever additional amount of androgen production is suspected in a person’s body.

A healthcare professional will ask you for your blood sample for the test. The blood sample is taken with an injection. Before injecting, the area to be injected is cleaned with an antiseptic. The healthcare provider will wrap your upper arm with elastic band to swell the vein from which blood sample will be taken. The provider will then inject the needle and collect your blood sample into the vial. After sufficient amount of blood is taken, they will remove the needle and press the injected site with medical cotton bud to prevent further bleeding.

The DHEAS test proves helpful to detect the deficiency of DHEA levels. The deficiency of DHEA results in prolonged fatigue, poor concentration, etc. The test is useful to evaluate the proper functioning of adrenal glands. Women experiencing excessive hair growth are recommended to undergo the DHEA test. The test is useful for people having; Type 2 diabetes,  Adrenal deficiency,  AIDS

There are no particular preparations for this test. Whenever you feel some uncommon thing happening with your body go and consult your doctor. The test only requires your blood sample so make sure you don’t consume alcohol within the span of two-three days before the test. There is nothing to worry about as the test is as simple as checking for blood group. Avoid consuming any drugs which can harm your hormone levels.
