I had severe giddiness this morning which led me to a nurse practitioner, who happens to be my neighbor, to seek for immediate assistance. She checked my BP and said that I have 160/100. I am just 22 and I know this isn't any good sign of my health. I am over 25 kgs obese. And I quit smoking very recently. Although I have had a history of high BP and giddiness since I was 21 and was diagnosed with vertigo for which I was prescribed VERTIN 2.5 mg, which helped cure the same. Would like to know what might be the cause of this high BP I have now and also what could be done to reduce it without prescription medications.

Weight loss is one of the cornerstones of treatment of hypertension. You can expect a fall of blood pressure by a factor for every 10 kg weight loss. Salt restriction, quitting smoking are other possible interventions. Regular physical exercise (apart form the goal of weight loss) like swimming, cycling, walking for an hour independently helps in reducing blood pressure.
