Dear Lybrateuser, - The basic principle for bp is that the upper (systolic) range should be between 120-100 & lower reading (diastolic) can be between 60-80 mm of Hg - it can be more after 40-50 years or so & in old age - to keep it under control & in normal range one has to follow a healthy lifestyle which includes a well balanced diet, regular exercise, weight under control, proper sleep & keeping stress to the minimum - have less salt in diet, also salty foods like namkeens, pickles, papads, avoid deep fried foods, foods containing trans & saturated fats - have more of fibre containing foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains like wholewheat, brown rice, oats, corn, quinoa instead of refined ones, lentils, sprouts, nuts, heart healthy fats as in fish such as mackeral, tuna & salmon, avocados, nuts, flax seeds - do regular exercise like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, meditation & deep breathing to relax your mind & body - sleep well for at least 7-8 hrs at night, keep sleep & wake up time fixed - destress by reading, listening to music, play a game or follow a hobby - bp doesn't increase in a fixed manner, it roses slowly over some time, getting angry releases stress hormones which raise the bp.
