Just started taking thyroid medication for tsh level 10, thyrox 25 as suggested by doctor, after taking medication cannot sleep. Is it due to the medication? If yes how to induce sleep?

Hello, Thanks for the query. Madam Levothyroxine that you are taking rarely causes any difficulty with sleep. Sleep disturbance is seen in hyperthyroidism (excessively active thyroid). So it is difficult to know why sleep is being disturbed. With appropriate treatment TSH should be brought down around 3 to 4 mU/L, at which all the symptoms are in check. Thanks.

This medicine is advised to take in the morning on empty stomache. It has nothing to do with sdleep.

Dear lybrate-user, if your initial tsh was only 10 and if your free t4 or total t4 was normal and if tpo antibodies are negative, you may only have subclinical hyothyroidism. If this is the case, the more prudent course of action will be to stop thyroxine and monitor tsh and free t4 once in 6 months and start thyroxine only if tsh > 15 and or if tpo antibodies are positive. If you stop thyroxine your sleep may normalize
