Home Remedies For Knee Pain: Procedure, Recovery, Risk & Complication

What is the remedy about?

Knee pain is a very common condition that can be the result of a wide range of problems. Short term knee pain can be effectively treated with home remedies. Moreover, they can also treat long-term knee problems effectively. Some of the home remedies for knee pain are:

When you exercise on a regular basis, the progression of the condition slows down. Strengthening your leg muscles can prove to be extremely helpful for knee pain.
  • Proper posture and support can also help in relieving you of knee pain. Avoid sitting on low chairs that can lead to straining your knees or on sofas where you almost sink in. Sitting on top of a cushion can help in such cases.
  • A proper diet is equally important if you want to get rid of your knee pain. People suffering from obesity are more likely to suffer from knee pain. Foods that will help in weight loss must be incorporated in the diet.
  • The inflammatory properties of ginger and turmeric help a lot if you are suffering from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric contains curcumin, an antioxidant that can lower the level of enzyme that causes inflammation in the knee joints. You can either have these in the form of capsules or add them to your regular tea.

The side effects of the home remedies for knee pain may include:

  • A wrong movement or pose while you are exercising can worsen your knee pain. It is necessary to be cautious while performing exercises.
  • If you have a chronic health condition, changing the diet pattern can possibly result in unwanted side effects.
  • The curcumin that is present in turmeric can decrease the blood sugar level of people suffering from diabetes. Consuming too much of turmeric can cause diarrhea, nausea or a feeling of dizziness. Anaemic patients should also consume turmeric while exercising caution.
  • Consumption of excess amount of ginger can cause irritation in the mouth, gas, heartburn or an upset stomach.

What are the post-remedy guidelines?

The post remedy guidelines are as follows:

  • Try to follow your diet strictly and maintain your weight.
  • Make sure that you wear comfortable shoes. It will help in maintaining your balance and leg alignment and prevent further knee injuries. Avoid wearing heels.
  • Ensure that you warm up before starting with your primary workout.
  • Do not stop exercising all of a sudden.
  • It is advisable not to increase the intensity of your exercise all of a sudden as that can affect your knees.
  • Do not sit down for long periods without moving as your knee joints can stiffen.

How long does it take to recover?

For short term problems, it may take 3 to 4 weeks to show improvements. If your knee has a minor sprain, it can be healed completely within 3-4 months. For a more serious condition, it may take a little longer. Most people resume their daily activities after a period of 6 to 9 months.

Are the results of the remedy permanent?

Daily application of the home remedies may cure both your short-term as well as long-term knee pain. However, there are chances that the pain may relapse and you have to seek medical guidance for the same.

Knee Pain - It May be a Sign of Arthritis?
If you are suffering from arthritis, it is important for you to know about how it affects your knee and other joints. Arthritis is a chronic, systematic inflammatory disease which damages your joints and connective tissues. Your knee is commonly affected by arthritis and there are three primary types of arthritis that occur in the knees. They include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis. Types of arthritis The different types of arthritis affecting the knees occur due to different reasons. Osteoarthritis is a progressive condition, which wears away the joint cartilage over time. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition, which may occur at any age. Post-traumatic arthritis occurs after an injury is inflicted to the knee and may occur several years after a ligament injury or knee fracture. Major symptoms Arthritis pain may occur all of a sudden, but commonly develops slowly. In the early stages, the pain is observed in the morning after you have been inactive over the night. Pain is likely when you want to move around. Pain may be experienced even when immobile. Periodic inflammation is a common symptom of arthritis of the knee. This happens because of the formation of bone spurs or excess fluids in your knee. The swelling gets pronounced after being inactive for a long period. The skin on your knee may look red and feel warm while you touch it. This may lead to chronic inflammation, which is very difficult to manage. Treatment There are several ways of treating knee arthritis. The mode of treatment depends on the severity and cause of knee arthritis. NSAIDS or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly prescribed for dealing with arthritis pain temporarily. Other medicines used for knee arthritis treatment are as follows: Analgesics, which help in pain reduction act as good alternatives to NSAIDS. Corticosteroids are used for reducing inflammation. Certain DMARDs or disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs are used. Certain injections that are used for helping with knee arthritis. They include: Hyaluronic acid supplements, which ease the pain and inflammation by lubricating your knee joints. Corticosteroid injections also soothe inflammation and pain. You may also require a surgery for dealing with knee arthritis when other modes of treatment fail. The most common surgeries are as follows: Total joint replacement, where your knee is replaced with a prosthetic made of metal, plastic or ceramic. Osteotomy, where the knee bones are modified for controlling pressure and damage in the knees. Arthroscopy, where an incision is made in the knee for removing damaged parts. Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition affecting the knee joints. This condition results from age related degeneration of joint cartilage and synovial fluid. This results in excessive stiffness, swelling, pain and decreased mobility due to loss of lubricant functions of joint cartilage. Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis: Treatment for knee osteoarthritis consists of anti inflammatory drugs, lifestyle modifications and knee exercises. Fill a large bowl with warm water and add ½ cup of Epsom salt. Stir it around, and then submerge your sore joints in the liquid. If you are experiencing pain in a less convenient place to soak, such as your knees, try taking a bath with Epsom salts. Run a tub full of warm water and add 2 cups of Epsom salt.

Hello! Best thing one should do when there is injury is to put ice every 2 hrs for atleast 72 hrs. One should be care in applying the ice so as not to get cold burns. In your case you should rest the knee and can support with crepe bandage. If it still hurts aftet 2to 4 days after the injury consult a Physiotherapist.

I am 34 year old male. I got hurt on my left knee in 2015 and the pain took quite some time to go. But now after longs hours of sitting, if I start to walk, it pains and the movement is not smooth (doesn't happen after a sleep, it happens mainly when I am working on my laptop or sitting in a car for a long time). It takes some time to come back to normal. Please let me know WHY this is happening, if this is serious or it will heal naturally with time. Are there any exercises etc that can be done to bring it back to normal.

There are multiple causes of knee pain, but often it's the result of the knee cap, known as the patella, being out of alignment and tracking incorrectly. This improper alignment and tracking can be due to an imbalance of strength between the four muscles that make up the group of muscles known as the quadriceps, located on the anterior, or front, of the thigh. This large muscle group crosses the knee joint. Typically, the most lateral quadriceps muscle, vastus lateralis, is the strongest muscle of the quadriceps group and overpowers the more medial quadriceps muscle, vastus medialis. This imbalance in strength causes the kneecap to track improperly because it is pulled laterally and out of its track by the stronger muscle. Strengthening the medial quadriceps muscles can be helpful in correcting this uneven pull by balancing out strength, which then allows the knee cap to track within its natural path.
