Health Benefits of Black Gram (Urad Dal)

It improves digestion

One of the biggest perks of consuming black gram is that it has high quantities of dietary fiber. This bulks up the stool in the digestive tract and stimulates peristalsis, the contraction and release of stomach muscles to move the waste materials out. Thus, if you are suffering from any digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, cramps, or bloating, black grams can certainly be a good addition to your diet in order to help you out. It also helps you optimize the nutrient absorption in your body.

It boosts your energy

As black grams contain very high levels of iron, they are really good at increasing the overall energy levels in your body. Iron is an extremely important nutrient for your body as it stimulates the production of red blood cells. These cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to all your organs. When your organs get high levels of oxygen and at the rate that they are supposed to get them, it improves the overall energy in your body. Iron also prevents anemia and some of the symptoms of anemia are fatigue, weakness, and even cognitive weakness.

It boosts bone mineral density

Black grams are filled with important minerals such as magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. All of these play a crucial role in affecting your bone mineral density. This is extremely important because as we age, our bones become weaker, making us more susceptible to breaking bones and osteoporosis. Maintaining a diet that has high amounts of minerals can help you maintain bone health.

Its good for diabetics

If you have diabetes, maintaining your diet is one of the most important things that you can do as it is the only thing that will monitor and control the disease. High fiber foods are often recommended to diabetics as it helps by regulating the amount of nutrients that’s absorbed by the digestive tract. As a result, it can help you maintain your blood sugar and glucose levels, making your diabetes much more manageable. It prevents dramatic drops and spikes in the sugar levels as well.

Its good for your skin

Black gram is used in almost every ayurvedic remedy that’s related to your skin. As it is extremely rich in minerals and vitamins, it is great for reducing any inflammation on your skin. It can also help get rid of marks and spots, bring more oxygenated blood towards your skin to make it look radiant and glowing, and also helps with healing and exfoliating your skin. Furthermore, black gram can help you get rid of tans, heal sunburns, and lessen your acne. On the whole, this bean is extremely good for your skin.

It reduces pain

Black gram is widely used in order to relieve people from pain and inflammation. It is widely used in Ayurvedic remedies for the same. It has large amounts of vitamins and minerals, and can boost your metabolism. It helps decrease oxidative stress as well. A paste made of black gram can be applied topically to your aching joints and muscles for relief.

It’s good for your heart

Black gram is also extremely good for your heart health. As it has high quantities of fiber, magnesium, and potassium, it is known to provide multiple benefits that can keep your cardiovascular system healthy. It can balance out your cholesterol, which is extremely good for your heart. It can also prevent artherosclerosis. Potassium is known to reduce tension in the arteries and veins, lowering your blood pressure significantly. The magnesium present in black grams can help stimulate your blood circulation, bringing more oxygen to all your organs. As a result, with all these effects, your cardiovascular system remains healthy.

It is a diuretic

Another advantage of black grams is that it is a diuretic which means that it stimulations urination. As a result, your body can get rid of harmful toxins, ureic acid, excess water, excess fat, and even calcium stored in the kidneys. As a result it can prevent kidney stones from occurring.

Other benefits

Black gram is known to heal your skin and speed but the rate at which your body heals its wounds. It has mild antiseptic properties which is why it is often used to heal wounds.

Even though it is known to prevent the same, very high quantities of black gram can induce the very thing you want it to prevent. It can also lead to gall stones or gout. You should always speak to your doctor before adding anything new to your diet or lifestyle to make sure that you don’t have to deal with any adverse effects.

Unhealthy habits to avoid after eating food
There are certain unhealthy habits which when done immediately after eating food will do the body more harm than good. Some of these include:

  1. For a proper digestion of food, never take a nap soon after the meal.
  2. Taking a shower immediately after having food will also affect the digestion process.
  3. Many of us have a habit of drinking tea after a meal. However, it is an unhealthy practice that can interfere with both the digestion of food as well as with the absorption of iron.

Spondylosis - Is Ayurveda The Best Form Of Treatment?

Spondylosis is a disease of the bone which involves wear and tear of the discs. The latter is the cushion between the joints of the neck and the neck bone. While it is mostly observed in aged people, it is not too uncommon among the youth as well. It can present with symptoms such as numbness, neck pain, headache, stiffness near the shoulder area etc. Ayurvedic treatment has been extremely promising in treating both cervical and lumbar spondylosis.

  1. The food connection: Ayurveda states that there is a close connection between Spondylosis and food. In Ayurvedic terms, an increase of Vata Dosha can lead to the problem of Spondylosis. For instance, consumption of frozen or processed food, sodas, junk food, low consumption of water, excess consumption of curried food heighten the chances of Spondylosis.

  2. Habits matter: As per the books of the Ayurveda, a reckless lifestyle increases the chances of Spondylosis. Habits such as day sleep, regular walking for a long distance, urging the suppression, rigorous exercise daily, work that involves bearing of weight on the neck, head and shoulder, night awakening etc. can wreak havoc and result in Spondylosis. On the other hand, healthy lifestyle changes can help a person refrain from this condition.

  3. Psychological Factors: Ayurveda states that even psychological factors can go a long way in making a person suffer from Spondylosis. Certain factors such as excess stress, loss of interest in day to day work, fear of failure, feeling of frustration, too much anger, grief resulting from personal loss etc. play a major role in Spondylosis.

Visible Symptoms of Spondylosis:
Some medical symptoms that can be easily identified as the signs of Spondylosis include fatigue, pain in the arm, shoulder, and forearm, difficulty in functions pertaining to neck rotation, extension, joint stiffness, muscular spasm, headache, weakness in the arm, difficulty in movement, difficulty in muscle coordination etc.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Increasing Height

Ayurveda, the ancient Hindu science of medicine, was developed over thousands of years ago (with initial mentions found in the Atharva Veda) and is based centrally on the concept of balance. This balance refers to the equilibrium between the mind and physical health to maintain a proper functioning body existing in perfectly harmonious co-existence. Based centrally around the usage of herbs and other natural remedies, Ayurveda has historically worked wonders in various aspects of life and well-being.This includes improving digestion, maintaining heart health, increasing height and maintaining an overall well-being.

When does Ayurveda flourish : If anything aids the flourishing of Ayurveda and herb growth, it is the rains, or the season of monsoon. The months of July-September provide the optimum temperature and environment required for proper growth of herbs, and in turn, is the best time for bodily growth as well. Advancements in science and technology and extensive research has proved, that the maximum amount of growth of the body takes place during the rainy season.

Understanding the concept of Vata dosha : Vata is a concept that, according to the ancient science of Ayurveda, governs all movement of the human body, along with regulating almost all bodily systems such as the nervous system and the elimination or excretory system. When the Vata dosha dominates (which is usually congruous with the Monsoon season), it is said that you tend to be more energetic and creative. Greater energy leads you to be more enthusiastic and lively, thus aiding your growth process as well.

Growth in height, however, is not universal in all cases. It is mostly seen in people aged 25 or below, as during that period, the bones are still relatively soft and developing.

What can you do:

  1. Engage in Yoga: Engaging in proper yoga and exercising regularly will go a long way in increasing height, especially when the Vata dosha is prevalent. In this regard, mention needs to be made of the Tarasana (Tadasana/Mountain Pose). Tarasana mainly exercises the foot muscles (both intrinsic and extrinsic), along with the diaphragm and quadriceps - all of which work towards increasing height.
  2. Eat right: The one imperative aspect that cannot be overlooked, and which goes hand in hand with yoga and exercising is maintaining a proper diet. Suggested foods include protein rich foods such as gram flour, pulses, milk and other dairy products, black gram, beans, etc. all of which will help you to grow those extra few inches.
