Acute Pancreatitis: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Apr 25, 2024

What is the treatment?

Chronic pancreatis

How is the treatment done?

Acute Pancreatitis is a condition where there is an abnormal and sudden inflammation of your pancreas. This condition is mainly caused by the presence of gallstones and alcohol abuse. The presence of the gallstones restricts the pancreas to secrete the pancreatic fluids into the bile duct. If this condition is left unrecognized or untreated then it leads to accumulation of enzymes in your pancreas and they digest the pancreatic cells which can cause severe inflammation. If you consume excess alcohol then it adversely affects the productivity and functioning of the pancreas. The toxic elements present in the alcohol can harm the pancreas which results in enzyme accumulation and in return causing inflammations. The common symptoms for this condition are abdominal pain. Vigorous coughing and certain movement patterns can trigger these abdominal pains. Other symptoms are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite. This condition might also alter the blood pressure levels in your body. Before surgery you are advised not to eat anything as the pancreas is strained trying to digest your body. The solid food is avoided by the usage of a feeding tube which is inserted through your nose and passed into your stomach. The treatment course depends on the severity of the condition.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

The pancreas is known to be curing itself but the treatment aims at maintaining proper enzyme secretion and eliminating the symptoms that you might face. Since you face abdominal pain, painkillers are prescribed to ease off the pain. Your medical expert might use a nasogastric tube that will remove excess liquid and gas to eliminate the signs of nausea and vomiting. During the procedure of the treatment of this condition, you might need some bowel rest. This means that you will not consume any solid food which might result in excretion of stool. You are advised to stat on a liquid diet. Dehydration is a common side effect for this course of treatment. This is why you are passed with many fluids that keep you from getting dehydrated. Sometimes breathing tubes are used along with ventilation equipments as you might face some breathing problems. In this condition of acute pancreatitis your pancreas faces problems to secrete hormones that are essential for your digestive system and in order to cure that, during the course of the treatment you might be advised to not eat anything solid for a couple of days so that your pancreas is not pressurized. Seek medical help as soon as possible to avoid complications in the future.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If you face abdominal pain by performing day to day activities even if when you are coughing then you might need to get diagnosed for acute pancreatis. You might also face nausea, vomiting, diarrhea along with loss of appetite. If you face these symptoms then you are eligible for the treatment of this condition.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Common side effects fort this course of treatment involves dehydration, weakness and nausea. The pain persists on a temporary basis and fades away as time passes by. However, if you notice some other side effects then consult with your medical expert as soon as possible.

How long does it take to recover?

You should maintain a healthy diet which is rich in calcium and avoid spicy and oily food. You should also take adequate rest along with the medicines that you have been prescribed. You should also prevent yourself from getting dehydrated and drink water every now and then.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The cost of treatment depends on the medical facilities that you get. On an average the cost of treatment for acute pancreatis ranges from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 55,000.
