Respected Sir, From the symptoms that you have mentioned, I would suspect that your uncle might be suffering from a Bipolar Disorder rather than a seasonal depression but I can say for sure as you have mentioned very few symptoms. Unfortunately for you, its very difficult to treat Bipolar disorder through counselling and he would need some medicines or mood stabilizers. This can only be prescribed after he is evaluated in detail and the diagnosis is confirmed by a psychiatrist. So, my advice would be to get him to a psychiatrist at the earliest by using any excuse. It would be better to do so when he is having those depressive symptoms rather than when he is spending like a king which seems to suggest manic symptoms as he would be less irritable and more amenable to suggestions during the depressive phase. Good Luck and make sure you get get him the required treatment at the earliest.

Seasonal affective Disorder (SAD) or winter depression is a common condition that often does go unrecognized. I am glad you have recognized this. Vitamin D supplements are usually helpful along with omega 3 fatty acts and also bright light therapy (BLT) to overcome the condition. I also believe that you might want to have him take the medications and try since they are over the counter medications and you can also add some multivitamin and multimineral supplements. However, this is not replacement for a physician's medical prescription which I would be happy to give if you are wanting definitive help, since I would need more information from you. Look forward to hearing from you.
