I have hypothyroidism and taking thyronorm 100 mcg tablets. Can breastfeeding cause thyroid in baby if i'm discontinue the tablets. Please give me suggestions.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Madam, hypothyroidism is a hormone (Thyroxine, T4 )deficiency disorder. As your thyroid gland is not able to produce required amount of that hormone, it has to be supplemented from outside in the form of Levothyroxine tablets in required doses. This has to be done for life time. So during breast feeding you will have to continue taking the tablets. Usually post delivery dosage requirement may get reduced, so please ensule that your dose is correct. That can be done by assessing the TSH level. Stopping the tablet will result in increased symptoms of hypothyroidism in you. When you are on tablets and breast feeding the baby, there is no effect on the baby.
