I am experiencing depression. I consulted a psychiatrist. He gave me lithosun 300 mg. 300 mg I feel is very high dosage. My depression was not in the worstest form. Still he suggested this. He prescribed half tablet for 3 days then full 1 for 3 weeks. After having it for 2 days my depression has increased 10 fold. What should I do? Should I stop the medication as the dosage is very high. I have never heard 300 mg being given in depression. Secondly I want to ask why do anti depressants lead to more depression and suicidal thoughts?

300 mg is actually a very low dose for lithium, it isnjsaly given at 800-900 mg per day for it to act. Also don't confuse milligrams of different medications, some start at micrograms and some can be given at 2000 mg per day. It varies and you shouldn't generalise all medications as one. Lithium also takes 4-10 days to act and full benefits seen by 30 days. So don't be worried, you need to be monitored with lithium levels and other blood tests. It is a very medication. Good luck.

Lithium is not an antidepressant but is given as an enhancer along with anti depressants. Lithium is a mood stabiliser. The dose you mentioned is a small dose. I am sure your psychiatrist has evaluated your current stressors, because depression can be due to stress and can be endogenous too. You need to be fully evaluated before treatment, the approach of treatment is diff in these types of depression.
