I am suffering from type 2 diabetes. Currently I am using glycomet GP2 forte and gluconorm G3 forte. Blood sugar is under control now. My question is that shall I continue these forever? Is there any chance of side effect? I can I switch over to Ayurvedic medicine? Which is more preferable Alopathic or Ayurvedic? Pls clarify. Thnx.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It appears you are on a fairly high dose of Glimepiride. Metformin (2000 mg) is also fairly high. Usually Glimepiride should not be used more than 4 mg in a day. Even though recommended upper limit is 8 mg, conventionally using more than 4 mg is not advised. Since there is no mention of actual glucose levels (fasting, PP and HbA1c%), there is no way to know how good is the control. Ideally in a well controlled diabetes fasting should be < 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg and HbA1c% <6.8. Another aspect looking at your weight and height it is clear that with a BMI of 31.25 kgs /M2 you are already in grade 1 obesity. This can be one of the major impediments in proper glucose control. As regards continuing the same medications for long time, yes you can do that. These drugs are safe. Millions of people are using them for years together. Further whether in future glucose level will remain in control with the same drugs can not be predicted. Most important is to look at your diet control and regular exercise of over 1 hour a day. That will ensure better control. Thanks.
