Nicotine in tobacco has a stimulating effect on intestinal transit and helps bowel movements. Therefore on quitting smoking, constipation is one of the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Don't worry, this will resolve gradually in 1-2 months after quitting. Meanwhile, as it is unpleasant, I suggest you should have an adequate intake of fluids - at least 1½ liters per day, and eat fibre diet. If that is still not enough you may need to consider taking a laxative, preferably a fiber-based one. Remember, quitting smoking is the best thing you will ever do. Constipation is only a very small price to pay.
