About Levoflox 500 MG Tablet

Levoflox 500 MG Tablet is a medicine that is a member of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic family. It fights against bacterial infections like tuberculosis, pneumonia, laryngitis, cellulitis, gastroenteritis, acute or chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections, tonsillitis, anthrax and plague. This antibiotic also treats infections of the pelvis, kidney, prostate and skin.

Levoflox 500 MG Tablet may also be used for uncomplicated skin and skin structure infection (due to S. aureus or S. pyogenes) and complicated urinary tract infection due to gram-negative Enterobacter sp, including acute pyelonephritis (caused by E. coli).

Levoflox 500 MG Tablet works by killing the bacteria that are causing an infection. It hinders the process of cell replication and cell division, within the cell of the bacteria, by inhibiting the synthesis of the DNA gyrase enzyme. Without this enzyme, the cell of the bacteria cannot survive or grow. Hence, Levoflox 500 MG Tablet behave as bactericide.

Levoflox 500 MG Tablet fights against bacteria that are Gram-positive as well Gram-negative. This broad-spectrum antibiotic is effective in inhibiting the synthesis of enzymes called DNA gyrase, which is essential to the process of replication and division of bacterial cells. Thus, Levoflox 500 MG Tablet inhibits the cell division of the bacteria, making it impossible for them to survive. This makes it effective in treating bacterial infections.

The doctor will prescribe instructions for taking Levoflox 500 MG Tablet according to your condition, the severity of that condition and the other medications you are taking. It is important to complete the course that the doctor prescribes, even if the symptoms disappear, or else the infection might recur. Do not double up the dosage to make up for a forgotten one, as an excess of this medicine can lead to overdosing.

        Interaction with alcohol is unknown. It is advisable to consult your doctor before consumption.
      • Interaction with Lab Test

        Evaluation of organ system functions (renal, hepatic, ophthalmologic, and hematopoietic) is recommended periodically during therapy; the possibility of crystalluria should be assessed; WBC and signs of infection.
      • Interaction with Medicine

        • Antineoplastic agents may decrease the absorption of quinolones.
        • Cimetidine, and other H2 antagonists may inhibit renal elimination of quinolones.
        • Foscarnet has been associated with an increased risk of seizures with some quinolones.
        • Loop diuretics: Serum levels of some quinolones are increased by loop diuretic administration. May diminish renal excretion.
        • NSAIDs: The CNS stimulating effect of some quinolones may be enhanced, resulting in neuroexcitation and/or seizures.
        • Probenecid: Blocks renal secretion of quinolones, increasing concentrations.
        • Warfarin: The hypoprothrombinemic effect of warfarin is enhanced by some quinolone antibiotics. Levofloxacin does not alter warfarin kinetics, but may alter the gastrointestinal flora. Monitor INR closely during therapy.
      • Interaction with Disease

        • Central Nervous System Depression: You may experience tremors, restlessness, anxiety, confusion, hallucinations upon taking fluoroquinolones. Avoid using caffeine-containing products.
        • Colitis: Avoid taking this medicine if it results in severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, and blood in stools. Consult your doctor you are having any gastrointestinal diseases. Drink adequate amount of water to prevent dehydration.
        • Qt Prolongation: Avoid taking this medicine if you experience any discomfort in your chest. Regular cardiac function tests are to be performed if you have any heart disease (arrhythmia) or family history of heart disease.
        • Kidney Disease: Avoid using Levofloxacin if you experience abdominal pain, diarrhea and joint pain. The medicine accumulates in the body due to impaired kidney function, putting you at high risk. Regular kidney function tests are to me performed if you are on Levofloxacin. Appropriate dose adjustments are to be made under doctor's supervision.
