Hi dr, my mom is diabetic. Dr. prescribed medicine pioz mf7. 5. She had this medicine for almost 6 months. Now this message not available at the chemist and they say it has many side effects so it is banned. Dr. gave an alternate pioz 7.5 & glycomet 500 instead of that. Not sure what to do. I searched the internet and nowhere it says it is banned. Can you please help us understand if the medicine is good to take. Also now my moms fasting sugar level is 300 due to non-availability of that medicine.

Pioz mf (7.5) was a fdc (fixed dose combination). Fdc is a single tablet containing more than one drug. Government removed many fdcs last year which they found was inappropriate or not required, pioz mf (7.5) was one of them. So yes, it was banned for sale by government, but not due to safety issue. Consider the fact that pioz (7.5) is still available for patients but not it's fdc with metformin. So if your mother was on pioz mf (7.5) earlier, she can now continue taking pioz (7.5) and metformin (500) as separate pills, provided that there was no contraindication to use any of this drug for the patient. Thanks and best wishes.
